It's December! Already! Who else feels like fall just flew by? I think it did. And I'm torn between being happy that it came and went fast (I'm not a huge fall fan) or for being happy that it just means springtime is getting closer.... Either way, it's December and winter has fully hit us up here in Fargo. It's FREEZING! We have snow on the ground, and Christmas shopping is in full swing... Yes, I survived working in retail during the Black Friday week, thanks for asking!
I'm glad you are joining me here today so that I can show you my latest creation! In my last post I shared the December Mini Album Kit I made using the Traveler's Journal December products from Papertrey Ink, I hope you had a chance to check it out. But, I felt it need something else...
The Red Buffalo Plaid revolution has hit me, and I’m loving it! We got this cute quilted plaid in at the craft store I work at, and I was like: Perfect! Just what I need to make a cover for my December Mini Albums! Let me show you...
Isn't that plaid just cute?
For this cover I roughly cut down two pieces of plaid fabric into a size that was slightly bigger than the Traveler's Journal: Outer Cover Die. Then, one at a time, ran the die and a piece of fabric through my Cuttlebug for the perfect sized cover.
Now the back side of this pre-quilted fabric is grey, but I liked the plaid so much that I kept the two pieces of plaid showing. I also cut down a kleenex box for one layer of tagboard to put inside my two layers of fabric, just so I had a little extra oomph and not a "flappy" cover. Yes, I said kleenex box, it was next to me and I was cozy.
I could have used my machine to sew, but it was just as easy to sit in front of the TV to watch Carson Wentz and the Eagles playing while used a whip-stitch around the outside edges. Once I had the two fabrics stitched together, I covered the edges with a binding of tan Twill Tape, again hand-sewing it.
Here's an in-progress photo of Sherman supervising my stitching. He's super helpful!
After the binding was in place, I used my Crop-A-Dile to punch holes and also insert gold Eyelets into the center fold of my cover. Then I threaded a piece of Traveler's Journal: Black Elastic through the eyelets, this will be used to hold the individual journals in place. If you'd like to see how this works I'll link a video of Heather's tutorial HERE.
Here are what the Journals look like within the cover:
Of course I couldn't just leave the cover plain! Next I embellished...
Here's a look at the fun supplies I used:
I really like texture so I dug out some Cork-Paper and stamped an all over pattern using Papertrey Ink's Background Basics: Striped Sweater in Pure Poppy and Pinefeather inks. Then I dug around my stash a little more to find ledger and wood-grain papers. I used the Traveler's Journal: December Die to cut out the mittens, tag, and tree "triangle" from the stamped cork. And the snowflake, tree trunk, tree ornaments, and "December" from my papers. I cut out a second pair of mittens from cork and stamped those with the mitten stamps from the Traveler's Journal: December Stamp Set.
Next I assembled all the embellishments onto the cover with glue. I thought it would be fun to "hang" the mittens from a sting of green fiber I had to show the front and back sides of the patterns. They remind me of kid mittens that have the string connecting them... I think I need these in my size!
For the closure, I didn't want to take away from my embellishments, or cover them up, so I just used another pretty fiber I had on-hand to tie around the whole cover.
Here's a closer look:
