Happy New Year’s Eve!

We are following the usual tradition here of not doing anything, because there are lunatics out on the road who are drinking heavily.  I am sure that you are all more sensible than that, and hope that you avoid the people who are not.  And that we all have a good 2019.

Also: all the Patreon stuff is up for this month. Enjoy!  …Or sign up, then enjoy!

RIP, Mike Taylor.

Swearing would be inappropriate, so I won’t.  But I’d like to. My prayers and condolences.

Item Seed: Explosive Knots.

Explosive Knots – Google Docs

Explosive Knots

Explosive Knots are an example of sufficiently-advanced technology, at least from the point of view of primitives still mired in pre-starflight cultures.  It’s not really their fault; at that level of savagery many of them don’t even understand the concept of space-time, let alone how to manipulate it with a piece of string and some manual dexterity. Calling it ‘magic’ at least allows some of the marginally brighter ones to conceptualize the idea of of Explosive Knots, which is really quite admirable of the pig-ignorant brutes.

Tweet of the Day, I Can’t Make These, Dammit edition.

Half of the ingredients are on my wife’s Not Allowed To Eat list.  Merely showing her the recipe would be cruel.  Seriously, I’m not even going to mention it to her.

Patreon Microfiction: Gesture of Good Faith.

Gesture of Good Faith” represents a particular peeve of mine: in a world of monsters and peasants, it’d be the easiest thing ever to get the latter on your side pretty quickly.  All you need are the severed heads of enough local monsters.  It works on both an idealistic and pragmatic level, really.

Dave Barry’s The Year in Review for 2018.

No, it doesn’t count.  I don’t care.  It’s not; and even if it was, Dave Barry would be grandfathered in.  I’m not giving up this annual pleasure.

Well, that was a year.

We got two more days left, but tomorrow’s Sunday and the end of the year is Monday.  I think that it’s probably safe to start thinking in terms of a recap. I know, I know, but still.

It wasn’t really a bad year, per se.  Story got published, my wife and kids are fine.  Wrote a book! …Which actually needs to be turned into a book, starting Tuesday, but it’s the principle of the thing.  But, yeah, my cat died.  And my kids dealing with that will resonate with them for a while.  Still…

PS: You folks are awesome.  That’s not in response to anything specific; just thought all y’all should hear it.

Book of the Week: Empire of Man (March Upcountry Omnibus 1).

David Weber and John Ringo’s* Empire of Man military science fiction series was great fun: if you’ve never read it, Empire of Man (Books 1 & 2) and Throne of Stars (Books 3 & 4) have been collected for your amusement.  Worth your time to peruse, if you haven’t.  Although I imagine that Weber / Ringo fans are not exactly under-represented among my own readers…

*I originally wrote that as ‘David Ringo.’  Which is not a slam, I swear.
