Legendary Pictures' 'Dune' reboot gets director Denis Villeneuve on board

Brian Herbert (son of Dune author Frank Herbert) has confirmed that Arrival director Denis Villeneuve has been signed to direct Legendary Pictures' upcoming Dune reboot.

It's official -- Legendary Pictures has signed the very talented Denis Villeneuve to direct the exciting new DUNE series film project.
— Brian Herbert (@DuneAuthor) February 1, 2017

Dune seems more suited for an HBO miniseries than a single film, but considering Denis Villeneuve's track record and the fact that he's stated Dune is his dream project, whatever approach they take will probably be amazing. Villeneuve is so good he could probably make it work as an animated stop-motion short if he wanted.

If you can't wait until the live-action Beauty and Beast comes out on March 17, you can basically watch the entire movie in this final trailer. It's like the previous trailers, except even more revealing. They could've at least pretended not every single person who's going to watch this has already seen the original animated version. Spoiler alert: the beauty and the beast fall in love.

Well it's definitely eight women, so they at least got that part correct. Some of them also appear to be color-coded, like they're Clue pieces.
Here's the trailer for the Britney Spears Lifetime biopic: 'Britney Ever After'

It's finally here: the trailer for the biopic about Britney Spears you probably wouldn't have cared about even if it was released when Britney Spears was still relevant. If you couldn't guess, Britney Ever After is a Lifetime Original Movie that was made without Britney Spears' approval or support. And with less access to Britney than you probably have, it's probably safe to say that this will be an accurate portrayal of Britney in the same way that Dumbo was an accurate portrayal of elephants.

Also, the secret to a good celebrity lookalike is to never actually show their face so you can't tell whether or not they actually look like the celebrity they're trying to look like.

'Colossal' trailer features Anne Hathaway controlling a not-Godzilla

In what is one of the more original movie premises of recent memory, Colossal features Anne Hathaway unknowingly controlling a giant godzilla-type monster that wreaks havoc in Seoul. The film was originally described by director Nacho Vigalondo as "Godzilla meets Lost in Translation." More recently it was described by Hathaway as "a sci-fi companion to Rachel Getting Married." It also stars Jason Sudeikis and tonally almost feels like a Judd Apatow movie. So basically the big takeaway here is that it's going to be a pretty weird movie.

Flying Lotus's first feature film 'Kuso' looks understandably crazy

Experimental music producer Flying Lotus has directed his first feature film titled Kuso, and it looks to be about as insane as you'd expect from an experimental music producer directing a feature film. Here's the official description, though it probably won't help you understand what you're seeing:

Broadcasting through a makeshift network of discarded televisions, Kuso is tangled up in the aftermath of Los Angeles' worst quake nightmare. Travel between screens and between aftershocks into the twisted lives of the survived.

This feels like if Kentucky Fried Movie had a child with Adult Swim.

Examining how different films approach color design

Listacles are generally terrible, but this one talking about the way color is used in film is actually informative and interesting. Although it would've been even better if they just focused on the content and removed the arbitrary ranking format. Not everything has to be a Top 10 List, especially something as subjective as color design.

The new Power Rangers trailer is here, and it finally reveals what the actual Power Rangers look like in action. They didn't shy away from the crazy costumes or giant robot battles at all. Plus this one didn't just reuse footage from an original Japanese version, so they can actually show you the actors' faces during fight scenes now. You also get to hear Bryan Cranston show how professional he is by saying "It's morphin' time!" in about as serious a voice as somebody can use when saying "It's morphin' time!"

Here's the trailer for the upcoming Netflix original movie The Discovery, starring Rooney Mara and Jason Segel and premiering March 31. Like any good trailer, it sets a mood without revealing too many plot points. For those curious, here's the official description:

One year after the existence of the afterlife is scientifically verified, millions around the world have ended their own lives in order to "get there". A man and woman fall in love while coming to terms with their own tragic pasts and the true nature of the afterlife.

It's nice to see Jason Segel taking on more serious work, though for me he'll always be the guy in Forgetting Sarah Marshall that showed his naked wiener. It doesn't matter how many seasons of How I Met Your Mother you did or if you played David Foster Wallace, once you write a Dracula musical and show your penis, that's who you are for life.

Examining shaky cam and why it exists

In this video essay, Rossatron explains the rise of shaky cam and why it's so prevalent in modern action movies. He doesn't defend its artistic merit (because that would be impossible), but he explains why the changing industry and the actual economics of film-making have made it so popular now. Long story short: doing a proper action sequence is difficult and expensive and shaky cam makes it easier and cheaper.

Apparently the final six-minute action sequence in The Raid took 8 days to shoot, and the video claims they sometimes shot between 17-26 hours per day. I don't even know how you shoot 26 hours in a day, but I guess I'd use shaky cam too if it meant I could avoid having to bend the laws of spacetime.

Netflix decides to dumb down 'Lucy' with new 'iBoy' trailer

For anybody who watched Luc Besson's Lucy and thought, "Hey, this would be a pretty good movie if they changed the main character to a boy and made Lucy a supporting character and also the story is way too believable so let's make it a bit more unrealistic," fear not, because Netflix heard you and made exactly that. Here's the trailer for iBoy, with a premise that's almost as dumb as the title. Emphasis added:

Tom is an average teenager whose world is turned on its head when a violent encounter with local thugs leaves fragments of his shattered smartphone embedded in his brain. He wakes from a coma to discover that returning to normal teenage life is impossible because he has developed a strange set of superpowers.

A24 just uploaded this mysterious 'Untitled' sci-fi trailer

Either the film is called Untitled or they've really left it untitled, but A24 has such a great track record that at this point this is enough to get me excited. It feels like something Shane Carruth (of Primer and Upstream Color) would be involved with, though his upcoming Modern Ocean features recognizable actors that don't appear here. And if this actually is a trailer for his new film, you've probably understood as much from this as you would from watching the entire completed movie.

Here's your Justice League standing around awkwardly

Because if you're going to have a picture of the Justice League lineup, it's definitely a good idea to leave out the most iconic character of the team and put the least known character smack dab in the middle. You want Superman in your Justice League? You must be a stupid idiot. Here, have Cyborg instead. You've done it again, DC Films.

'Rings' is still coming out and here's the new trailer

It keeps getting pushed back, but here's the new trailer for Rings set for release in early February. Although calling it a trailer is being generous, since it's only a minute long. Also, if you don't know what to expect from a Rings movie by now I'd get yourself checked for Alzheimer's or some other mental condition. There's, uh, only so much you can do with the exact same premise.

Here's the official 'Alien: Covenant' red band trailer

Because it's Christmas and obviously everybody thinks of blood-thirsty unstoppable killing Xenomorphs on Christmas, 20th Century Fox released the official Alien: Covenant red band trailer today. With Ridley Scott back at the helm, it feels appropriately Alienish, hitting all the things we've come to expect from a proper Alien movie: weird slimy eggs, face-huggers, and pointy tails disemboweling humans. You know, the kind of stuff that brings families together this time of year to celebrate.

New shot from 'It' shows Pennywise in daylight

Costume/makeup designer Tom Woodruff Jr. posted a new image of Pennywise from the upcoming It remake on his Instagram last night. It's a clear departure from Tim Curry's costume from the original, going less for a traditional kid's clown and more of a carnival jester. A really creepy carnival jester that clearly likes to eat children and wouldn't pass as an employable clown at all. Tim Curry's version didn't appear threatening until he wanted to, whereas this version seems incapable of looking like it doesn't want to murder things.

Entertainment Weekly has a new Wonder Woman production still depicting Gal Gadot attempting to steal the Amazon's mythical sword, the "god killer."
