Brian Herbert (son of Dune author Frank Herbert) has confirmed that Arrival director Denis Villeneuve has been signed to direct Legendary Pictures' upcoming Dune reboot.

It's official -- Legendary Pictures has signed the very talented Denis Villeneuve to direct the exciting new DUNE series film project.
— Brian Herbert (@DuneAuthor) February 1, 2017

Dune seems more suited for an HBO miniseries than a single film, but considering Denis Villeneuve's track record and the fact that he's stated Dune is his dream project, whatever approach they take will probably be amazing. Villeneuve is so good he could probably make it work as an animated stop-motion short if he wanted.

It's finally here: the trailer for the biopic about Britney Spears you probably wouldn't have cared about even if it was released when Britney Spears was still relevant. If you couldn't guess, Britney Ever After is a Lifetime Original Movie that was made without Britney Spears' approval or support. And with less access to Britney than you probably have, it's probably safe to say that this will be an accurate portrayal of Britney in the same way that Dumbo was an accurate portrayal of elephants.

In what is one of the more original movie premises of recent memory, Colossal features Anne Hathaway unknowingly controlling a giant godzilla-type monster that wreaks havoc in Seoul. The film was originally described by director Nacho Vigalondo as "Godzilla meets Lost in Translation." More recently it was described by Hathaway as "a sci-fi companion to Rachel Getting Married." It also stars Jason Sudeikis and tonally almost feels like a Judd Apatow movie. So basically the big takeaway here is that it's going to be a pretty weird movie.

Experimental music producer Flying Lotus has directed his first feature film titled Kuso, and it looks to be about as insane as you'd expect from an experimental music producer directing a feature film. Here's the official description, though it probably won't help you understand what you're seeing:

Broadcasting through a makeshift network of discarded televisions, Kuso is tangled up in the aftermath of Los Angeles' worst quake nightmare. Travel between screens and between aftershocks into the twisted lives of the survived.

Here's the trailer for the upcoming Netflix original movie The Discovery, starring Rooney Mara and Jason Segel and premiering March 31. Like any good trailer, it sets a mood without revealing too many plot points. For those curious, here's the official description:

One year after the existence of the afterlife is scientifically verified, millions around the world have ended their own lives in order to "get there". A man and woman fall in love while coming to terms with their own tragic pasts and the true nature of the afterlife.

It's nice to see Jason Segel taking on more serious work, though for me he'll always be the guy in Forgetting Sarah Marshall that showed his naked wiener. It doesn't matter how many seasons of How I Met Your Mother you did or if you played David Foster Wallace, once you write a Dracula musical and show your penis, that's who you are for life.

The 2016 Japanese Godzilla remake Shin Godzilla (known in the States as Godzilla Resurgence) has been nominated for Best Picture in the Japanese Academy Awards. Not to be confused with the 2014 Gareth Edwards version of Godzilla, which was not nominated for Best Picture in any version of the Academy Awards, except for maybe the one put on by Gareth Edwards in his living room in 2014. And even then, Godzilla was probably still runner up.

In this video essay, Rossatron explains the rise of shaky cam and why it's so prevalent in modern action movies. He doesn't defend its artistic merit (because that would be impossible), but he explains why the changing industry and the actual economics of film-making have made it so popular now. Long story short: doing a proper action sequence is difficult and expensive and shaky cam makes it easier and cheaper.

Apparently the final six-minute action sequence in The Raid took 8 days to shoot, and the video claims they sometimes shot between 17-26 hours per day. I don't even know how you shoot 26 hours in a day, but I guess I'd use shaky cam too if it meant I could avoid having to bend the laws of spacetime.

For anybody who watched Luc Besson's Lucy and thought, "Hey, this would be a pretty good movie if they changed the main character to a boy and made Lucy a supporting character and also the story is way too believable so let's make it a bit more unrealistic," fear not, because Netflix heard you and made exactly that. Here's the trailer for iBoy, with a premise that's almost as dumb as the title. Emphasis added:

Tom is an average teenager whose world is turned on its head when a violent encounter with local thugs leaves fragments of his shattered smartphone embedded in his brain. He wakes from a coma to discover that returning to normal teenage life is impossible because he has developed a strange set of superpowers.

Costume/makeup designer Tom Woodruff Jr. posted a new image of Pennywise from the upcoming It remake on his Instagram last night. It's a clear departure from Tim Curry's costume from the original, going less for a traditional kid's clown and more of a carnival jester. A really creepy carnival jester that clearly likes to eat children and wouldn't pass as an employable clown at all. Tim Curry's version didn't appear threatening until he wanted to, whereas this version seems incapable of looking like it doesn't want to murder things.

Entertainment Weekly has a new Wonder Woman production still depicting Gal Gadot attempting to steal the Amazon's mythical sword, the "god killer." More importantly though, the image shows the Amazon's shoddy craftsmanship when it comes to making skirts. I mean, c'mon, that thing's only like 70% done.
