If you've dreamed of customizing a bear for third person, action RPG combat, taking your own striking ursine warrior out into the fields for glory and battle, the Early Access release of Witanlore: Dreamtime has you covered.

Made by a group of past Elder Scrolls modders, Witanlore: Dreamtime will have you playing as a humanoid bear-man, one you've taken the time to customize through the game's character-creation program, allowing you to make just the right bear for you. Once that's ready, you're off to explore a world of quests and danger, wandering an open world to see what adventure grabs you.

When not beating on monsters with your chosen weapon style, you can roam the world to learn about its lore, talk to other bears in conversations where what you say matters, or find in-game friends to join you on foolhardy journeys as you try to figure out what evil forces are conspiring to throw the world into chaos. You know, as evil forces do.

Customizable bear warrior, though. That's good enough alone, right there.

Steven Peeler has been developing RPGs as Soldak Entertainment for 13 years now. From his first title Depths of Peril up to last year's Zombasite, you always know you're playing a Soldak game right away. We talked to him about his design philosophy and the things that have changed for indie developers over the years.

What's your approach to game design? All of your games are quite similar except for one or two prominent features, such as different settings, the zombie parasite in Zombasite, or a more goal-oriented approach in Din's Curse. Are you starting with specific features in mind that would make the new title stand out, or is it just a matter of experimentation and iteration until you have found something you're happy with?

My design approach is actually a combination of those two things. First, I come up with a few key ideas that makes the game unique from other games in the industry and our own previous games. These are basically the ideas that everything else builds on. Then I write up a relatively short design document. This document fleshes out the key ideas a bit more, adds a lot of smaller details and ideas, and basically is my overall direction for the game.

This essentially becomes my initial todo list for the project. The rest of the project is like you said experimenting and iteration where I'm implementing items from my todo list, play testing, adding new ideas from my play testing, adding ideas from the rest of the team and external testers, removing items from the list that no longer fits or are no longer feasible, and then repeating these last few steps until I'm happy with the game.

Your games feature a dynamic world where things are happening even without any player input and non-player characters are, in fact, treated like actual characters with their own motivations. You have explored this quite a bit already, but do you think this can be further expanded upon, leading to even more emergent gameplay?

I definitely think we still have room to expand on the dynamic world ideas. In every game of ours, that had a dynamic world, we have added new possible outcomes, given entities in the world more tools to work with, and made it more clear the cause and effect of things that happen. I don't see this changing anytime soon.

How would the perfect Soldak game play?

I think in the perfect Soldak game you would be constantly surprised by what could happen or a specific sequence of events even after playing 100s of hours.

Has one of your games ever surprised you?

Oh, sure. Usually it is something like I'll rescue an NPC while distracted by something else and they will betray me by setting up an ambush. Things like that will momentarily surprise me. Of course, I know what is possible, so it's not a complete surprise.

However, every once in a while there is some interaction of the different systems that makes something happen that leaves me completely baffled. Like right now you can launch projectiles at your NPCs in Zombasite and they will usually move out of the way of the projectile. I have my suspicions, but I'm not quite sure why they do that.

One aspect of your games that is constantly being criticized is their graphics. Do you feel that they hold your games back in terms of commercial success, or are there enough customers more interested in mechanics than in eye candy?

I'm sure we would sell more copies of our games if they had better graphics. However, I'm not sure Soldak would survive spending a lot more money. It's basically a gamble that could make the company much more successful or bankrupt us.

There are many gamers out there that care more about gameplay than eye candy. It has been a struggle over the years getting their attention though.

Speaking of struggling: you've been selling your games directly from your website for quite some time. How do your games on Steam and other portals fare in comparison? Is it still possible to be a successful indie developer that way, or do you think that you'll eventually need to change your approach due to the changing landscape of digital distribution?

Where we sell our games has definitely changed over the years. In our first few years, nearly half of our sales were direct, we managed to get a few small retail publishing deals, and Steam was pretty big, but not huge. Now days, Steam has gobbled up a huge chunk of the digital game distribution market including a lot of our direct sales.

Except for Kivi's Underworld we've always managed to get our games on Steam, so while there has been a large shift of where our sales come from, it hasn't really changed much. If we ever fail to get a game on Steam or Steam decides to abuse their market position, we will have more trouble than we would have in the past though.

How hard has it been to get press coverage? I know you're still doing your own PR, and with the flood of press releases we get each day, I can imagine that this is increasingly difficult.

It has definitely gotten a lot harder to get press coverage the last few years for small indies. There are just so many games coming out, it's difficult to cut through the noise especially if you are like me and would much rather focus on actually making games instead of marketing.

I noticed that there have been quite a few Youtube channels that covered Zombasite. Is this the future of game coverage?

I'm not sure I would call YouTube channels the future of game coverage, but they are certainly becoming an important part. The most annoying part of this is that every time we release something, we get tons of emails from people pretending to be some big YouTuber, but they are just someone scamming developers for free keys. It's usually not hard, but it's a pain to wade through these for legitimate YouTubers...

How would you rank your own games? Which ones do you consider successful in terms of your own personal development experience, which ones were harder to make?

I pretty much always think the latest game is our best. Kivi's Underworld was the only exception to that (I think Depths of Peril was better). I think with all of our games we have successfully created something that is quite unique in the marketplace. Our games might not sell a ton of units or compete graphically with some games, but there really aren't any other games quite like ours.

Most of our games were harder than the others in some manner. With Depths of Peril, I built the entire engine from scratch (this is before Unreal & Unity were options). With Din's Curse, I put in a lot of work and experimenting into expanding the dynamic world aspects so that the world evolves based on what the player does and what the other entities in the world do.

With Drox Operative, we created our first and only space based action RPG. It was quite a bit of work to figure out what would still work and what new things we needed to do to fit that setting. And finally our latest game, Zombasite, is our most ambitious game to date and contains systems from all of our previous games and a few new systems. Getting everything to work together was a big challenge.

What's next for Soldak? I reckon you're working on your next title already?

We are now working on 2 different projects at once since they overlap a bit. The first is going to be an expansion for Zombasite. I can't say a whole lot yet, but there is about to be a large uprising in the Zombasite world. Will it be for good or bad?

The other project is going to be a separate game that is focused around the ideas of hardcore characters with random skills and traits, the next generation of character is evolved from his/her parents, and each world has a random setup and win conditions.

Soldak Entertainment's titles are available from their website and from Steam. You can also follow Steven Peeler on Twitter.

imprint-X is in love with buttons. It features 700 of them, after all, spread out over 100 puzzles you'll have to solve to free people from nanobot control. You see, these little machines, called Wardens, are kind of taking over people, so you might want to do something about it.

Besides, who doesn't like pressing buttons?

imprint-X will take players to strange mechanisms inside of peoples' minds, tasking them with hitting the buttons on them in order to figure out how to disable them. You'll need to use timing, pattern recognition, and memory to solve each of them, but also a little bit of curiosity. imprint-X wants to play off of the natural curiosity of wanting to know what a button does, so the first order of business will be pressing things to see what happens. And It probably won't give your subject brain damage.

imprint-X also offers many varied puzzles of the mind, letting you get lost in the micro machines that control thoughts and dreams. It's yet another game of exploring odd worlds from the studio, and although technically smaller, they're no less colorful, surreal, and widespread.

In the wake of the recent immigration ban, iNK STORIES have decided to donate all of the proceeds from 1979 Revolution: Black Friday, their game that mingles history and fiction to make the player feel the power of past events and cruelties from the shootings in Jaleh Square, to the ACLU from February 1 - 10, 2017. In doing so, they hope to endorse and support the ACLU's efforts to combat these damaging rulings and help refugees and immigrants.

"While it's easy to be immobilized by hurt and hopelessness, I believe that now more than ever we are confronted with an obligation, where we must dig in, resist and unite. Silence is not an option--so I commend those in our community who are taking action and hope that other game developers and publishers will join in, as we partake in this crucial movement -- coming from all religious, national, ethnic and generational backgrounds to denounce the ban - and stand with humanity, by saying that this is not right, willing to rise up against the injustice." says Navid Khonsari, creator of 1979 Revolution: Black Friday.

1979 Revolution: Black Friday takes you on a choice-based narrative, tasking you with making calls on how to proceed, who to trust, and how to act. It follows the historical events of a religious demonstration turned to bloodshed, taking you along on that journey by painstakingly recreating events from photographs from the period. As you make your way through the story, you'll experience history through your own eyes, connecting with it, and the people involved, in ways that will leave you shaken, looking at events with new sight.

Failbetter Games have apparently taken a shine to all things cold and dark. Their upcoming game, Sunless Skies , leaves the weird and dangerous underzee of Sunless Sea behind and reaches for the stars... which, incidentally, happen to be just as weird and dangerous.

If you're already familiar with Failbetter Games' particular brand of weird Victorian fantasy and narrative-driven gameplay, you can expect similar things in Sunless Skies. However, the game's setting and a bunch of features will be notably different from their previous title, and you don't need to have played Sunless Sea or Fallen London to enjoy this game.

Influenced by "the science fiction of H.G. Wells and C.S. Lewis, the planetary romances of Leigh Brackett, Art Nouveau, and Planescape: Torment" you commandeer a spacefaring locomotive into the stars and encounter many a wondrous and strange thing.

Such a journey into the unknown is not without danger, and dying is consequently a big part of the game. A source of frustration in Sunless Sea was that your progress would be reset, forcing you to replay a lot of early game content over and over. Now, "a captain's actions are not erased when they die. Many of the effects you've had on the world are remembered, and the achievements and follies of your earlier captains may haunt those that follow." This sounds like an excellent and meaningful change in the way the game is played.

The Kickstarter campaign is in full swing and already raised a third of its initial funding goal within minutes. The campaign website also allows for an extensive glimpse into the wondrous universe Failbetter Games are creating, so I suggest you drop by and get a first taste of the things to come.

To learn more about Failbetter and the other games in this universe, you can visit their website, as well as Twitter and Facebook.

The world of Vindit's Quote is one defined by ignorance. Knowledge has been purged, the population lives in blind bliss. But some dare to keep their precious books and their wisdom, and it's your job as inquisitor to seek how this informed heretics and quite literally beat the knowledge out of them with your magically-imbued Book of Bliss.

Yes, in Quote, you're the bad guy. The titular warrior metes out justice with tome in hand, bludgeoning enemies with a simple pushes, dashes, and slams that slowly expand into combos and special attacks. But your most powerful weapon are books themselves; by feeding these unlawful texts to your beaked companion Tatters, Quote can unlock fierce new abilities, ranging from teleporting strikes to wide ranged blasts.

But Quote's homeland is perhaps even weirder than its history and book-based magic. Inspired by the surrealist works of Hieronymus Bosch, each vibrant isometric level is more otherworldly than the last as you travel these lands in your pursuit. Odd statues and reliefs adore the walls, organic structures clutter the background, misshapen inhabitants dance or worship, flee, fight back.

Quote released recently on Steam Early Access for $14.99, currently featuring the game's prologue and opening two chapters, as well as the procedurally-generated Infinite Library. More chapters, outfits, abilities, and lore will come in the future. You can learn more about the game and developer on Vindit's site and Twitter page.

Another week, another round of trailers. This time, we have procedural mummies, one-minute-adventuring, really bad novels, and educational adventuring on wretched islands.

Your ship hovers along any surface in any direction.
From developers Kitty Calis and Jan Willem Nijman: "Minit is a peculiar little adventure played sixty seconds at a time. Journey outside the comfort of your home to help unusual folk, uncover countless secrets, and overcome dangerous foes, all in hopes of lifting a rather unfortunate curse that ends each day after just one minute."

Second time's the charm for this Indonesian RPG. Legrand Legacy has an intriguing art style and interesting combat mechanics. There is a sizeable demo for you to try before the crowdfunding campaign comes to a close.

Bucket Detective

Mailman Tim might just have the most important job of all: delivering a letter to the evil warlock, letting him know that the people actually like him. A peace offering, if you will, for the warlock is about to rain down death and destruction on the world. This would be a cakewalk if not for the 100 rooms Tim has to traverse, and his life is running out...

You see, in The Warlock's Tower, each single step drains your life force, sapping one hitpoint whenever you move. And you only have three of those! Thankfully, picking up coins replenishes your life (or, to be more precise, it turns your life into the coin value), but this still forces you to think very carefully where you tread.

The simple Gameboy aesthetic is certainly deceiving, as the game's puzzles can be devious. It doesn't take long before enemies are added to the mix, such as the zombie, who takes a step towards you for every three steps you take. Further elements like levers and keys turn this game into a major challenge before you know it.

There are also co-op stages where you have to control two characters and Twitch integration, which lets your audience help you solve these diabolical puzzles. That's a whole lot of good stuff for a game that looks like it should be played on a teeny tiny screen!

The Warlock's Tower will be out later today on Steam and the Humble Store.
Rocketbirds 2 Evolution has a lot of high-firepower, grizzled bird-based gameplay on offer, promising two modes: one that tells a story of evil penguin plots filled with explosions, jet packs, and warrior chickens, the other letting up to four players take battle-hardened budgies deep into enemy territory.

The first part of Rocketbirds 2 Evolution once more casts the player as the Coq of War, taking you on a journey through a story of intrigue and danger as you shoot your way through a lethal agency of evil birds. You'll get tons of weapons to shoot in all directions, as well as rocket packs for aerial dogfights. If you want to play with your pals, you can slide on over to part two, which features four-player on or offline co-op, where you can equip and upgrade up to 100 weapons as you rescue avian POWs.

If you like your sidescrolling gunplay with a side of light humor, or you just like to fry your chicken yourself with a flamethrower, Rocketbirds 2 Evolution should satiate that need for birds and bullets.

Forget everything you knew about ancient Greece. Hellenica's alternate history take adds Steampunk and magic into the mix. After an industrial revolution, the country is in turmoil and faces countless threats from without and within. Luddites ravage Athens and Persians threaten to invade. Diona, a reclusive loner, gets appointed to be the champion of Artemis, goddess of the hunt, and to save Greece. Which is easier said than done if you don't really know where to begin.

Hellenica is a turn-based tactics RPG with branching story paths and interesting combat mechanics. It eschews grinding in favor of high replayability. Due to the branching storyline, you'll only see a tiny fraction of everything the game has to offer in your first playthrough, which will probably take you between three and five hours.

Characters don't earn individual experience and levels, which puts the focus squarely on the tactics part. Every stage feels like a puzzle to be solved, and always relying on the same strategies won't get you anywhere. Character progression is handled by fulfilling certain requirements in each stage: "kill three enemies with fall damage", "cause XX points of damage in a round", and so on. This gets you rare ability points that can be spent on exactly one new skill for one of your characters. Hellenica really wants you to work with the few skills you got.

And what a bunch of skills those are! Diona can turn into a bear for a short while, but she's not special by any means. Every character plays differently, with a very specific set of talents you need to master. Ranged and magical attacks, stealthy backstabbing, even steam-powered mech piloting want to be used to your advantage.

Speaking of advantages, you also get to exploit the environment. Throwing enemies down a cliff, or slamming them against walls (or each other) is ever so satisfying. Some battlefields even have moving platforms you can use to quickly flank your foes, or decorations you can employ to your advantage. Bopping an enemy on the head with a giant marble statue never gets old.

In terms of storytelling, Hellenica can roughly be divided into nine chapters, each of which offers at least two very different paths forward. That makes for a mind-boggling number of possible ways to beat the game. There's a kind of core cast of playable characters you'll meet along the way - even if under different circumstances, depending on which paths you take - and a bunch of supporting characters you may or may not encounter.

All of this is incredibly well done. This is not a game you can replay, it is a game you'll want to replay. However, it can be a bit too wordy for ist own sake, shoving long-winded exposition down your throat. I reckon that's the price of including all these references to Greek mythology. Still, the writing is pretty funny, with likeable characters, light-hearted banter, and a bunch of neat twists on classical motifs.

You can purchase Hellenica from itch.io and Steam for $19.99 (with an additional release discount of 25% if you hurry). In Brave Odyssea, a vast world awaits you. But not one explored on foot or by car or air, but by sea, within your rusty workhorse of a ship. Nick Carver's "open-open RPG" may be early in development, but its early screenshots and details - showcasing intriguing shores and aquatic beasts - already seem promising.

Iron rigs belching flame and smoke in the sky. Glacial seas. Ancient bridges spanning shores. Sprawling forests. Stepped falls leading to inland waters. The world of Brave Odyssea is diverse and deadly. Early concept art reveals the dangers that can lurk out in those waters, like a massive hermit crab that uses a derelict ship hull as a shell. But an adventurer such as yourself won't be stopped by such long distances and dangerous threats; in Odyssea, you'll have a selection of unique tools at your disposal for aid and defense. A particularly powerful one is the explosive flying drone that can help clear obstructions.

Brave Odyssea is still in early in development, with a first trailer coming soon. You can follow its progress on the game's site and Twitter page.

If you needed any proof that the futuristic cyber-dystopia of M.E.R.C. is a miserable place, consider this: it rains all the time. Neotopia, the last city standing, is a damp, cold hellhole. What's worse: you cannot buy raincoats for your mercenaries. Now that's just cruel.

Other than that, I feel right at home with the game's blend of real-time tactics and the logistics of managing your mercenary company. Tasked with eliminating the evil Manta syndicate, you hire a bunch of specialists and send them on various missions. Ordering your team of four heavily armed goons around the decrepit, wet city feels pretty solid. Sure, the camera stays locked on your team and can only be zoomed in and out, but the game controls well for the most part.

The lack of a minimap might be M.E.R.C.'s biggest drawback, especially when you consider that all streets and buildings look samey. One early mission had me searching for the extraction point for almost five minutes. My poor guys, tired and wet, kept getting lost in the green-greyish scenery.

Everything else held up surprisingly well. Sure, occasionally my team would take cover on the wrong side, getting shot in the back, enemies would shoot through walls for whatever reason, or minor pathfinding issues cropped up, but then, M.E.R.C. is an Early Access title and these flaws can probably be fixed.

However, when everything works as it should, it's a lot of fun. Flanking a group of enemies with your two squads, cloaking and attacking from behind, or just lobbing a grenade through a doorway are the high point of each encounter. I expected the lack of a pause function to be the game's undoing, but the ability to slow down time instead actually feels better, as it doesn't kill the flow of firefights by allowing you to stop and agonize over your next decision.

Completing your current assignment sends you back to your base, where you can spend money on much-needed equipment, heal your soldiers, or hire some new people because your goons managed to get shot up again. Healing takes a while, which can be a problem since you're only allowed to take a full group of four into battle. If one or more of your soldiers is hospitalized, you need to hire expensive replacements.

The overall difficulty can be quite high, exacerbated by random side missions, but the challenge keeps the metagame interesting. If developer TinyMob Games manage to iron out some of the game's issues during its time as an Early Access title, M.E.R.C. should appeal to fans of tactical military games, players who miss the glory days of Syndicate and XCOM, and people who just love the feeling of wet boots and soggy clothes. Seriously now, doesn't the rain ever stop?

You can purchase M.E.R.C. from Steam for $19.99.
The Grey Man has you playing as an extraterrestrial life form, one who's come to the planet to hang out, meet the locals, kidnap a few of them, and then poke around to see what's interesting. I mean, who wouldn't want to go check out this whole new planet you've just landed on. Sure, the locals throw rocks or call in airstrikes when you mess with them a little bit too much, but there's just so much neat stuff here.

In The Grey Man, the world is open for you to wander, interacting with local wildlife, fauna, and the people who are staying in the nearby campgrounds. You can just go for a walk in the woods, fly about using your space ship, say hi to your new human pals, or use your cosmic powers to create a little mayhem when people get sassy with you. The campground is open for you to explore how you see fit, so let your alien buddy take a moment to enjoy the new environments.

Things will change as you explore and act out, though. The people don't take kindly to being kidnapped by aliens, after all (not that they were nice BEFORE you started taking them), so the military might show up. Maybe the woods will catch fire. Maybe something you did will spark a series of events that don't turn out so well. There's consequences to something as simple as wandering the woods.

So, go enjoy your life as a stranger in this land. Trouble might be coming for your alien buddy, but in the meantime, he's got insects to befriend and campers to bug.
