As a homeschool mom I know there are a lot of reasons why i love homeschooling, but there are times when I have to remind myself. Here are a few things that I love about homeschooling.

The time I get to spend with my kids
This one is the most important reason for me. And when I say spending time with kids, I don’t mean just me. My husband also gets to spend time with them when he gets off work because they aren’t stuck at a table doing homework. Being a mom that’s been on both sides (public school & homeschool), I feel beyond blessed to be able to spend my entire day with my kids, and that my husband has that extra time with them in the evenings. Don’t get me wrong, we have our days for sure but I wouldn’t change my decision for the world.

Being able to choose our curriculum
I love having the freedom to pick and choose what curriculum we use in our homeschool. Our decision is to used faith-based curriculum in our home, and this is not something that would be available in public school. Also, having the option to change out a curriculum that may not be working for one of my boys for one reason or another is amazing. Everyone learns differently, so being able to use a curriculum that works with your child is pretty amazing.

Those “aha” moments
These moments remind me just how blessed I am to be able to homeschool my children. Those times when we spend hours working on something, or even months and then it finally clicks! The excitement and the look on their face when they finally get it is just irreplaceable. Hands down one of my favorite about homeschooling.

Flexibility
I love being able to pick the times and locations that we homeschool. If we have a doctor appointment one mornings, then we simply start school when we get back home. If we decide to take a vacation in September, then we can take a vacation. If we decide to travel across country, then we can travel and school at the same time. If it’s a beautiful day, we may choose to head outdoors with our books, or take a nature walk, or even decide to take an extended lunch and enjoy a picnic. Don’t get me wrong, we do have to keep up with our attendance, but we still have that flexibility that we wouldn’t get when it comes to a traditional school setting.

Teaching the Bible
I love that I can have prayer in our homeschool, that we can read the Bible and talk about God. I love that I can teach our science based on creation and that I can talk about how our country was founded on Christian belief.

Field Trips
We love field trips and try to go on at least two a month. Sometimes more, sometimes less depending on the weather. I love giving them the opportunity for hands-on learning and experiencing things. Sometimes the field trips are just the boys and I, but more so than not, we make it a family outing. We also love heading on field trips with our homeschool group.

Raising Individuals
This may be the last one on my list but it doesn’t by any means indicate that it isn’t as important as the first. I love that they are able to be themselves and not have to worry about what’s considered to the be “norm”. I love that I am raising free-thinkers that aren’t afraid to be themselves.

Winter in North Carolina can be very interesting. One day we have snow on the ground, and the next it’s 70 degrees out and the windows are all open. While this is the type of weather we are used to, it’s also the type of the weather that ends with at least one of my kids coming down with a cold.

Since I know this happens every year, I’m thankful that my medicine cabinet is well stocked with children’s cold medicines that have proven themselves to work fantastic with my kids.

When it comes to all the aches and pains they get while sick, along with reducing their fever, we always turn to Children’s Advil®, it’s a wonderful solution for kids ages 2 and up to 11. Children’s Advil® comes in several great-tasting flavors including:

• Bubble Gum
• Grape
• Blue Raspberry
• Fruit
• Dye-Free White Grape

If you happen to have an infant between the ages of 6-23 months, there’s also the Infants’ Advil® White Grape, which provides unsurpassed fever relief (among OTC pain relievers) with a syringe for easy dosing.

This time of year, we always seem to get a terrible cough along with the fever. The cough at times can seem harder on the little ones than the fever itself. When those time happens, we turn to Children’s Robitussin® Extended-Release 12 Hour Cough to control and relieve symptoms all-day or all-night. The Children’s Robitussin® Extended-Release is available in grape or orange flavor and is recommended for ages 4 & up. Also, keep in mind that certain Children’s Robitussin® products are only suitable for children ages 6 and up.

Last but not least I want to mention Children’s Dimetapp® Multi-Symptom Cold Relief Dye-Free. This product is fantastic for easing all those stuffy and runny noses that appear this time of year, while also quieting a bothersome cough. All in a great-tasting grape flavor that’s dye-free, for children 6 & up.

In the irreverent spirit of fun that made “The LEGO® Movie” a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble – LEGO Batman – stars in his own big-screen adventure. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.

Will Arnett reprises his starring role from “The LEGO Movie” as the voice of LEGO Batman, aka Bruce Wayne. Zach Galifianakis (“Muppets Most Wanted,” the “Hangover” films) stars as The Joker; Michael Cera (TV’s “Arrested Development”) as the orphan Dick Grayson; Rosario Dawson (TV’s “Daredevil”) as Barbara Gordon; and Ralph Fiennes (the “Harry Potter” films) as Alfred.

For this month I did narrow it down to only three items, since I brought a pretty extensive list to the table for our December favorites/educational gift ideas. Trust me when I say that it was hard narrowing down to three, so without delay…here are our favorites:

As I mentioned earlier in a Wellness Wednesday, I pretty much fell off the wagon last year. As I approached the new year, I started looking back on what things I didn’t do last year. Reasons as to why I “fell off the wagon.” Here are things that I have done in years past, but basically failed to keep them up last year.

Schedule Your Workouts: Once you decide how many days you plan on working out, it’s time to add it to your calendar. I always pencil in my daily workouts on my schedule, the same as I put in other appointments. I don’t add a specific time, but I do put it in the order that I plan on tackling that day. That way I know what task it’s going to come after and if it’s on my calendar for that day, then I’ll mark it off.

Keep A Workout Log: This is key when it comes to keeping your progress. I use a workout log to keep track of weight and measurements, as well as what I did for that day. How much I lifted, how fast I ran, how far I biked, etc. This is an awesome way to see how much hard work you’ve put in to reach your goal.

Find A Community: This part is very important, especially if you work out alone. This can be either a local group, or even an online group. I have been part of an amazing group just for women for the past 3-4 years and I seriously couldn’t have gotten as far as I have without all their support.

Give Yourself Rewards: Getting healthy and staying healthy is hard work, but everyone needs to have a little fun! As you reach the goals you’ve set for yourself, there is nothing wrong with rewarding yourself. Is there a new workout tank you’ve had your eye on? Maybe a new pair of shoes? What about a special meal you’ve really been craving?

Set Goals: Goals are one of my top motivators. I try to set goals that can be achieved by putting in hard work daily. For me, setting short term goals work best, but others might choose to set long-term goals as well. This can be as simple as working out two days a week, running those miles a little faster, or whatever you’re working towards.

And remember…you can do it!!

However, that’s to be expected from time to time and the plus side is we haven’t actually purchased the book.

Here is a list of our most recent Library Book finds that we simply loved!

What a Naughty Bird

In this hilarious rhyming story, one naughty bird flies around the world, pooping on other animals! He goes on a bull on a farm, an elephant in Africa, a wolf in the mountains, and a shark in the sea. It’s all fun and games until the bird goes a step too far and poops on a bear. The bird forgot that bears can climb trees, too, as the bear climbs up when the bird is sleeping to a higher branch and returns the favor!

This Is Not My Hat

When a tiny fish shoots into view wearing a round blue topper (which happens to fit him perfectly), trouble could be following close behind. So it’s a good thing that enormous fish won’t wake up. And even if he does, it’s not like he’ll ever know what happened. . . . Visual humor swims to the fore as the best-selling Jon Klassen follows his breakout debut with another deadpan-funny tale

We Found A Hat

Two turtles have found a hat. The hat looks good on both of them. But there are two turtles. And there is only one hat. . . . Evoking hilarity and sympathy, the shifting eyes tell the tale in this brilliantly paced story in three parts, highlighting Jon Klassen’s visual comedy and deceptive simplicity. The delicious buildup takes an unexpected turn that is sure to please loyal fans and newcomers alike.

A Grand Old Tree

Once there was a grand old tree, whose roots sank deep into the earth and whose arms reached high into the sky. Every spring the grand old tree flowered and bore cherries for the squirrels and birds that made their homes in her leafy branches. And every year, seeds from the tree scattered in the wind, along with many millions of leaves. Mary Newell DePalma creates an emotional tale of life and renewal, of nature’s bounty and quiet balance, illustrated with simple images made powerful with vivid colors and moving compositions.

Max at Night

Max is done being brave, and now it’s time to sleep―all he has to do is say good night. But something’s wrong! When Max goes to say good night to the moon, it’s nowhere to be found. Unable to sleep without finishing his nighttime ritual, Max embarks on a journey to find the moon and wish it a good night.

You Are Not A Cat

This clever and hilarious story stars Cat, who starts out perfectly content and relaxed, and Duck, who infuriates him by meowing like a cat instead of quacking like Cat thinks he should. Written completely in dialogue, this minimalist text by award-winning novelist Sharon G. Flake (in her debut picture book) is fun to read aloud and easy enough for newly independent readers to enjoy on their own. Anna Raff’s humorous and deceptively simple artwork highlights the characters’ personalities, showing Duck’s quirkiness and good humor and Cat’s rising frustration as Duck impersonates a variety of animals, refusing to concede that he is, indeed, a duck. Duck’s silliness will appeal to children who enjoy pretend play, and older siblings will relate to Cat’s annoyance as Duck refuses to leave his side. This concise, funny story is ideal for multiple readings, with playful details in the artwork and humor that never fades.

Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons

Pete the Cat is wearing his favorite shirt—the one with the four totally groovy buttons. But when one falls off, does Pete cry? Goodness, no! He just keeps on singing his song—after all, what could be groovier than three groovy buttons? Count down with Pete in this rocking new story from the creators of the bestselling Pete the Cat books.

The Little House

Virginia Lee Burton won the Caldecott Medal in 1943 for her memorable picture book The Little House, a poignant story of a cute country cottage that becomes engulfed by the city that grows up around it. The house has an expressive face of windows and doors, and even the feelings of a person, so she’s sad when she’s surrounded by the dirty, noisy city’s hustle and bustle: “She missed the field of daisies / and the apple trees dancing in the moonlight.” Fortunately, there’s a happy ending, as the house is taken back to the country where she belongs. A classic!

Spiders

For the first to third grade set, spiders are fascinating and suitably gruesome, especially when looked at in EXTREME close-up. Amazing images show the beauty and otherworldliness of spiders. Simple, engaging text conveys basic information about spiders as well as cool and quirky facts. One stop-action montage shows a spider leaping twenty times its body length!

Songbirds

This new series is based on the Peterson Identification System, which uses life-like illustrations to help young naturalists make accurate identifications. The design of each book is straightforward, simple, friendly, and easy to use — ensuring the success of beginners. Each of the four new titles in the series (SONGBIRDS, WILDFLOWERS, CATERPILLARS, and BUTTERFLIES) features vibrant color photographs of North American plants, birds, and insects in their natural habitats.

I can’t believe that we are on week 20 in our homeschool. Sure, we’ve had our ups and downs this year, but the year has seemed to fly by. It seems like only yesterday we were cracking open our curriculum for the first time.

The question is, how is our homeschool going? Actually I’m very happy to report that it’s going very smooth. This is our second week back after taking a two-week Christmas break. After having two good weeks back at school, I am not convinced that the boys needed that break. I’m not sure if I mentioned it or not, but over the four years that we have homeschooled, this is the first time we have taken time off for Christmas. We also opted to take a few days off for Thanksgiving this year as well and I think it’s a change that I’m going to keep.

We had snow come in last week over the weekend, and we took that to our advantage and did a few fun activities. The boys made a snow volcano and we also did a snow melting experiment to see which snow would melt faster, the one salt, or the one without. After the both experiments we talked about they happened and had a blast.

We also learned about Jim Henson this week and after our lesson on that, we made a bird marionette. This activity was so fun and simple. We actually found the directions for it on Pinterest and luckily had everything already to make it. I’m still working on planning activities a head of time. This was one of my New Year goals. It’s been a slow progress for sure, but I’m getting better at that.

What Are We Reading:
We just wrapped up reading A Bear Called Paddington. This was a read aloud that I did with both boys. Davis wasn’t overly thrilled with the book, but loved it! When we wrapped up that book, the boys then switched to two different read alouds.

Luke is currently reading Squanto, A Friend To The Pilgrams. This book is complementing his current history lesson really well and he loves it. With Luke I usually only read one chapter aloud at a time, but with this book, he has asked to read more. We have been doing between 2-3 chapters a day spread out. We should have the book finished by tomorrow.

With Davis I started reading Little House on the Prairie. I felt I was taking a chance with this particular book, but I really wanted him to be familiar with it. In February, our homeschool group is going to be doing a few activities around Little House and Davis has never read any of the books. We has watched the television show, but let’s be honest it. They aren’t exactly like the books. I have attempted Farmer Boy with him a few times and he isn’t a fan, so I have my fingers crossed on this one. The only complaint that I have received from him so far on this book is that the chapters are long. He has a hard time comprehending when it comes to read alouds and I lose him a lot.

So that’s our week in a nutshell. Thanks for reading!!
