Video Metadata Hub

The IPTC Video Metadata Hub (VMD Hub) is a recommendation comprising widely used properties. They can be used for describing the visible and audible content and for rights data, administrative details and technical characteristics of a video. All the properties can be expressed by two technical standards in a seamless way and many of them by additional four standards. This number may increase.

Technical Implementations and Mappings

All Video Metadata Hub properties can be expressed by these technical standards:

  • EBU Core - recommended for metadata in stand-alone documents associated with the video binary
  • XMP - recommended for metadata embedded into the binary video file

Hub Action

The IPTC Video Metadata is named as hub as it supports the exchange of metadata across standards.

Use case: retrieve metadata from an input video file, normalize it to VMD Hub properties and then write it into video files of different formats.

Step 1: read metadata embedded into a video file

The metadata has to be read by a processor supporting the file's standard, in the example below the Apple Quicktime format. Then the retrieved property values are mapped by the IPTC VMD Hub rules to corresponding VMD Hub properties.

Step 2: embed metadata into files of a different format

First in this step the format of the target files needs to be know, then by the mapping of the VMD Hub property values are transferred to the target format and the format-specific processor writes/embeds the metadata into the file.

Status

IPTC has published the Video Metadata Hub Recommendation version 1.0 on 24 October 2016.
