Alcatraz is one of the world’s most famous prisons and for good reason. In the years that its doors were open, it housed the most dangerous and hardened criminals. You may know some of its most notorious inmates like Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly, The Birdman, Doc Barker and others. What made Alcatraz truly memorable is that it was believed to be a fortress, completely inescapable. That’s what they though until 3 inmates made an escape and were subsequently, never found. I’ll Have a Large Childhood Memory with a Side of Chili, Please
2 Feb 2017 | 3:00 amI am participating in a sponsored campaign hosted by Nexium 24HR. I received compensation for this post. While all opinions stated are my own, I make no claims about Nexium 24HR as a product or its effectiveness. Use as directed. May take 1-4 days for full effect. I had an odd request for my birthday this year. I wanted to go to a restaurant. Not a fancy restaurant with fabric napkins and menu items so hard to pronounce you have to point at their names when ordering. No no. The place I wanted to go with the family was a place with paper napkins and a menu where you could add chili to anything, probably even your beverage. A place from my youth. He’s talking about rising up and we sing with him. We’ve talked about the show’s incredibly talented, diverse cast of performers. It’s a picture of the world we want him to have: A communal space capable of great things when we partner together for a common purpose. Toddler’s Guide to a Banana
31 Jan 2017 | 3:47 pmBananas, ‘nanas, nanners or whatever you call them, are often referred to as “nature’s perfect food” because they’re loaded with such good nutrients. Their perfection becomes even perfecter for parents because they can be toted around in a purse or bag as portable, unrefrigerated rations that are actually good for a kid to eat. However, when presented with “perfection,” kids apparently consider it their duty to find fault. This goofy guide only takes a look the most common flaws seen through their squinty critical eyes. And, oh my god, there are a ton of other ways a kid can consider a banana to be inedibly nasty. Broken into pieces? Blech! Not cut into properly sized pieces? Barf! Too warm or too cold?... -
My Wife Just Said… #302
30 Jan 2017 | 4:25 amIn the midst of a crazy time, we all need to take breaks. Sometimes you literally have to force yourself to look away so you can look forward. And sometimes you gotta hang out with furry little creatures who make you feel like the planet is worth living on. These lemurs were a breath of fresh… wait, never mind. That metaphor doesn’t work. They probably smell pretty bad. Maybe it’s not a furry mammal that helps you cope. Maybe it’s trashy reality TV. Maybe it’s a freaking nap (someone please send me one of those). Whatever you use, keep it up. It’s going to be a long year. A photo posted by Avara Capen (@ithrowtp) on Jan 27, 2017 at 3:57pm PST

Assemble Also Does Adventure Playgrounds
19 Jan 2017 | 9:57 amBaltic Street Adventure Playground, image: Assemble You may know Assemble from their winning the Turner Prize. Or from their The Brutalist Playground made out of foam. But did you know they also make adventure playgrounds? In 2014 the architecture collective created Baltic Street Adventure Playground in East Glasgow, Scotland, as part of the culture program for the Commonwealth Games. Like any good, real adventure playground, it's a lightly supervised apparent chaos zone (but not really) stocked with warm clothing and slightly dangerous tools and things that kids might get hurt with. Cut the Strings to Pinocchio with Digital HD
31 Jan 2017 | 6:15 amDisney is releasing Pinocchio this week. You know how Disney works. They like to pull many of their movies from retailers and store them in their magical vault. During that time we have all laid claim to the title of #KingofSoup. I'm already King in the North! King in the North!! (You can't get more North than Seattle. Well, except Canada and they surely don't count do they?)You may have seen this across my channels. That's because I have partnered with Life of Dad, and Idahoan® Premium Steakhouse® Potato Soups to bring a Steakhouse experience to my house in minutes - and to let you all know that you can too.A recent survey found that 79% of Americans, including 92% of parents, wish it were easier... -
Rally Time
17 Jan 2017 | 1:09 pmHappy New Year readers! We took the kids to their first rally this past Monday, (MLK Jr. Day) at the Washington State Capitol in Olympia. It was a gathering of nearly 7000 similarly minded folks advocating for the Washington State Legislature to fully fund (as the Washington Supreme Court has already mandated) public school education in our state. As is stands now, without any action being taken, the public schools will fall 10's of millions of dollars short of what is required for this funding, leaving school districts such as Seattle no choice but to cut already thin staffing and operations. In short, there will be a lot of students, especially those in low income areas where there is no outside support,... -
Merry Go Round
25 Dec 2016 | 4:08 pmMerry Christmas, and Happy Holidays readers! I've been working very hard over the past couple of months, and thus have had less time (much less) than I've needed to devote here at 'Luke, I am Your Father'.But what better time than Christmas Day to check in and to let you know that the LIAYF clan are still here, enjoying our time together, sharing lots of love and happiness and, as always, growing older and wiser.Thankfully, a couple of weeks ago Lukas and Annabelle mailed their Christmas letter, which Lukas carefully wrote to Santa for both of them. Annabelle, who is still crazy for Superman (as well as Peppa Pig, Hello Kitty, Rainbow Dash, Mickey Mouse....) only asked Santa for a pair of Superman... -
Corn on the Dad
13 Sep 2016 | 5:00 pmIt was my birthday yesterday. Don't ask, but know that next year I'll briefly be a member of the Over 50, Under 5 club. Yay!I'm not mentioning this to get any birthday greetings from you readers, I received plenty of those from all my closest friends - through Facebook, of course. Almost no one at my work even realized it was my 'special day', which shows where the VennDiagram between my FB friends and Co-workers intersects I suppose.Anyway, the real reason I mentioned my birthday, is because although I received a whole lot of love, hugs, smiles, and cool stuff from my loved ones, there was one teensy little present which I just had to enjoy right away. No, I was IMPLORED to.It was from Annabelle.Lukas... -
The Eyes Don't Have it
11 Sep 2016 | 5:25 pmThe Blind Boys of LIAYFOh great, now my eyes are going to crap too.In fact, I struggled again last night while trying to read Annabelle a bedtime story. At this rate I'm sure I'll be blind by the end of the year. I'll probably have to add the blind moniker to the beginning of my name. Something like Blind Willie Seattledad. Or Blind Lemon Seattledad. But on the bright side, I might finally take up that harmonica that's been staring longingly at me all these years.Ok, so in reality I am not going to lose my eyesight, which is a good thing, but they are noticeably weaker with each passing month these days. While most days I just think of myself as a dad period. In the back of my mind I know that the tell tale...

Training moves to the trail.
15 Jan 2017 | 12:36 pmWell I blinked and the first two weeks of January were gone. Chris and I had a conversation this week about when might be a good week to take a shot at this hike, and we might be looking at July 4 weekend. It’s going to be here before I know it. I’ve been doing really well so far, watching my food, cut back on the sauce, and stopped using the elevator at work. Hitting the stairs about six times from the bottom parking garage means I’m up to about 1500 steps a day. Today I moved out to the trail for the first time to start adding elements – a full Camelback, hiking boots, and distance. I’m into my 4th mile as I type this, and feeling good minus my back. The water weight of the Camelback adds a torque on my...

Why I Chose To Be Part Of The Women’s March
23 Jan 2017 | 7:37 amMen and women are different. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be treated equally. Around the globe this weekend, on all seven continents, millions of humans marched. Each who chose to show up did so for their own reasons. My reasons were simple. As a father, I marched to show my daughter that I support her. I wanted my son to see that a strong man is one who helps and supports others. As with everything, I lead by example. As a male, I wanted all the women around me to know that I support them. That if men’s minds are not changed, nothing will change. I want my voice and actions to be part of the change. As a photographer, I wanted to be there to capture and share the experience with others. To document... -
Paying For College
18 Jan 2017 | 8:59 amIt is a proud moment in any parent’s lives when their child is accepted to college. The moment our son received his acceptance letter to his first choice will never be forgotten. You get to check off another accomplishment proving that you did ok as parents. Soon after the hugs and fist bumps were done the realization of the high price tag ahead got us thinking, “how are we going to pay for this?” Back when our kids were born 529 college savings accounts were new. While they sounded like a great idea, plenty of us had questions about how they would work when our kids needed them. The web was brand new and so were these programs so there was not much to go on besides trust. Looking back with what we... -
Stop Creating For The Algorithms
6 Jan 2017 | 6:59 amI’ve been outlining my keynote for next month’s IzeaFest and one of my scribbles reads “stop creating only to satisfy an algorithm.” The more I pondered it and how I might represent it on a slide, the more I realized I wanted to write about this specific epidemic because it bothers me to my core. There is a constant game being played for our attention. Dictator Orange Tinyhands is a master of making you look over here, while something you should be paying attention to what is happening in front of your face. Last week, I watched as a friend shared that she received a pile of angry feedback for a recent video that had nothing to do with the thumbnail or title. She looked right into the camera and said that... -
2017 Is Here. Now What?
3 Jan 2017 | 6:16 amThe calendars have been flipped and 2017 is upon us. A fresh start and we don’t know if the car is going to crash over the cliff, handle all of the curves or keep on driving off into the sunset. I’m full of worries for the world around me. Anyone with half of an open mind would realize there is a pot of turmoil and upheaval boiling on the stove and soon it is going to start making a mess. The holidays were full of quiet time away from screens and memories being made with those I love. There has been plenty of thought put into my 3 Words exercise and yet I haven’t settled on the ones I want to commit to. I’m trying to not make them fight, truth and balance. Those are all going to play a big part, but they... -
The Press Hotel – Inspired By Writing
28 Dec 2016 | 5:32 amLetters pour off the hallway walls as you walk to the elevator. Typewriters hang on the wall and hold menus for you. You are not in some hipster gin infused dream, but find yourself at The Press Hotel in Portland, Maine. I awoke there recently and noticed that the desk chair had the familiar “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” quote on the back of it. In the dark of night I had not noticed it. The first of the morning sun shined on it and the writer in me smiled. Traveling the globe, a lot of my time is spent in hotels. Most don’t leave an impression beyond an overly friendly staff member checking me in and a luke warm buffet as I rush to speak or catch my next airplane. In town to speak at...

1 Feb 2017 | 6:00 amThe very nature of having twins requires a ton of your effort. Twins are exhausting. As they grow, the challenges change but can still be overwhelming. If you find yourself losing your temper and being short on patience with your twinados, you’re not alone. Having children can bring out the best and worst in parents. How to Raise Twins on a Single Income
18 Jan 2017 | 6:00 amFrom the moment you find out you’re having twins, you know deep down that they will cost a lot of money. The challenge is how to pay for all those expenses especially if you are on a single income. When we had our twin daughters, I was working full time and my wife was already a stay-at-home mom to our two boys. The sudden jump in baby expenses without a jump in salary put a pinch on our budget. You’ve likely found yourself in a similar situation. Let’s look at how you can raise twins on a single income… Why One Income? The reasons why you have a single income may vary greatly. But even if both parents are working before twins doesn’t mean that will continue after their birth. Child care costs for twins... -

Twins Have Their Own Language
4 Jan 2017 | 8:01 amAs soon as your twins can make a sound, they will start to “talk” to each other. I started to notice this when our girls were a few months old. Our twins shared a crib for several months before we separated them into their own cribs. Once we separated them, we started to notice an interesting phenomenon. Since they were in separate cribs but slept in the same room, they could hear each other squawk and make other baby sounds. To help themselves locate each other, one girl would squawk and the other would answer with her own squawk. Twin to Twin Language Patterns This pattern of twin-to-twin communication continued through to their toddler years. I’d frequently catch the girls chatting to each other with...

Creating New Year resolutions for a healthier eating habits for kids. #chobanikids #ad
19 Jan 2017 | 8:59 amFor the last year I’ve been working with Chobani to share my family’s love for their products. With a new year upon us, we as parents will talk about dieting and eating healthier. Well, maybe this year it shouldn’t just be talk… maybe that means filling it with healthier foods, especially for kids. It’s so easy to fall into bad snacking habits for kids – I know it’s happens to us from time to time… you’re on the go, it’s cheaper, it’s sometimes easier…. but for the better part of the last year we’ve been eating Chobani Kids Greek Yogurt Tubes… I learned to keep 3 tubes in the freezer at all times, cause as we get up and go we don’t have to worry about keeping them cold – they’ll melt into the perfect... -
Pampers gives back to Nurses who give so much those first few moments and days!
13 Jan 2017 | 6:08 pmI have had a long standing relationship with Pampers and am honored to say I was one of the first dads invited to be part of the Pampers Baby Board. Over the years I’ve gifted hundreds of diapers to people and charities, and Pampers was especially helpful when they answered my call to assist after Hurricane Sandy. So, when I saw the group of people Pampers wanted to support next, it didn’t take but a second to say yes. Pampers would like to say Thank You to the nurses for the support that happens leading up to those memories of birth and their help facilitating strong relationships between newborns and their parents during the very crucial first minutes, hours and days of life. In collaboration with... -
Protect your smart-home with Bitdefender Box
11 Jan 2017 | 7:41 pmIt’s that great time of year again when CES show us what we’ll be drooling over in the months ahead… last year I talked about the previous iteration of the Bitdefender Box, which blocks connections to malicious URLs and scans local devices for vulnerabilities. To me it was a safety net that I needed to have with all the smart devices (cameras, TVs, speakers, etc) but this newer version of the Bitdefender Box 2.0 takes it to another level with deep level packet inspection on network traffic, detect network intrusions and let the administrator to block any new device connecting to the network. 12 Tech Trends from CES That Prove Parents Are Obsolete
11 Jan 2017 | 11:22 amWe can debate lots of things, like which is better – Snickers or Milky Way (for the record, obviously Snickers). Some things are just set in stone, like the fact that robots will soon be our overlords. No debate there, but what we can debate is who the robots will destroy first. Spoiler Alert – Parents, well, you have had a nice run. As I walked the show floor at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, I made it my mission to determine who the robots were gunning for first. The good news? Our kids look safe…for now. The Penis REALLY DOES Have a Brain
29 Jan 2017 | 3:40 amOf course, some of you might take issue with what exactly I’m referring to when I use the term “brain.” Admittedly, it’s not a very big brain. In fact, if we go by comparison – the bigger the penis, the smaller the penile brain – since the brain in the penis is mainly composed of only two nerves (nerves are simply “wires” that are attached to cell bodies in your head brain through any number of “extension cords” [interneurons] that run down into your body). But hey, if a one millimeter worm can have a brain and a mind, why not a penis? I’m not claiming Penis Brain is one of Einsteinian proportions. Einstein’s brain was roughly composed of 86 billion brain cells (neurons) with probably more... -
Enlarging the Human Heart: Brain Science’s Final Frontier?
22 Jan 2017 | 2:33 amTo say that I was surprised to learn that the woman who invited me to lunch for my birthday was a New York model in high demand throughout the fashion world would be an understatement. First of all, why would Siona want to have lunch with me? Secondly, what was up with those angry, nauseating rashes on her arms and neck running down the front of her chest? Not Siona, but close. If that was surprising, imagine how astonished I was when three months later I found myself in the midst of a crazy-wild romantic relationship with her, sans rashes. Or how surprised I was to wake up from a lazy, post-coital nap one Saturday afternoon to sounds of loud, angry shouting down in the kitchen. Siona and her ex, Alan, were... -
The Great Unraveling: My Brain’s Prediction for the Trump Presidency
15 Jan 2017 | 4:00 am“Every characteristic absence of spirituality, every piece of common vulgarity, is due to an inability to resist a stimulus.” ~ Friedrich Nietzsche Thursday morning I got up while it was still dark, put the dogs on the back porch, and mindlessly forgot to close the sliding door behind me. My short term memory ain’t what it used to be. Not unexpectedly, Archie Farchie, our long-haired, smushy-faced kitty snuck out. Fortunately, it was foggy and cold and he walked around to the kitchen door and immediately began pounding on it for me to let him back in before any owls, eagles or coyotes got a scent of him. Donald Trump was born 43 days before me. We both worked as builders. But doing the nail-hammering,... -
Can Rewiring Your Brain Make Your Dreams Come True?
8 Jan 2017 | 2:53 amProbably. But it’s not that easy for most of us, due to one little brain design flaw. More about that in a bit. When I was 25 years old I decided to sell my half of a very profitable business that required me to do almost no work whatsoever (it was a military hardware manufacturing business obtaining lucrative U. S. Air Force subcontracts and getting others to fulfill them. We would easily undercut large corporations like Lockheed, Boeing and Pratt & Whitney on the outrageous prices they were charging for their proprietary parts). I was young then, and my brain operated pretty unconsciously. If you can believe it, considerably more than the mostly unconscious way it operates these days (but not THAT... -
Is a Compulsion to Repeat the Trauma Really a Thing?
1 Jan 2017 | 2:33 amShortly before I turned 18, a juvenile court judge strongly suggested I would be doing myself and the citizens of New Haven, Connecticut a big favor if I found a new town to live in. New Haven judges were notoriously hardcore – they lived in caves, afterall – so I wisely took this judge’s “suggestion” to heart. Conveniently enough, some friends were taking a 3000 mile road trip to The City of Angels to begin school that Fall. I thought it might be smart to sign on and join them, only I had no job and no money. What I did have though, were friends and parents of friends. I went around to all of them and asked to borrow money to make the trip. I earnestly promised to pay each of them back, with interest. By...

31 Jan 2017 | 6:34 pmWill is berry good at stacking Very Berry Cheerios There are silly, goofy dads. Lighthearted dads with incomparable imaginations and bubbly personalities brimming with positivity and unyielding amounts of praise and sunshine and happiness. I’m not one of them. Maybe it’s my gruff New England upbringing or the fact that I was raised a pessimistic Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan when the former was cursed and the latter was a joke. But the fact remains, I’m a serious dad. I demand good grades in school and 100% effort in all endeavors and for better or worse, “fun” is probably not a word my kids would associate with me. I’m the #KingofSoup Thanks to My Queen and Princes
31 Jan 2017 | 6:35 amSoup so simple, even a 3-year-old can make it. If you could create your ideal steakhouse in your own kitchen, what would it look like? That was the question posed to me by Idahoan® Premium Steakhouse® Potato Soups, who challenged a bunch of dad bloggers to battle for the title #KingofSoup. If you know me, you know I love steakhouses, the steak steakhouses serve, and I ALWAYS get soup. In fact, soup is so important to me I once broke up with a girl in college because she insisted soup wasn’t a food. OK, that wasn’t the sole reason our relationship ended, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t play a part. Anyway… I love soup, especially in winter. It’s warm and comforting and informal — just how I like my... -
Why I Let My Kid Watch Lemony Snicket
30 Jan 2017 | 5:00 amA Series Of Unfortunate Events A television show featuring the repeated attempted murder of children? Orphans who lose their parents and then their guardians? A grown man trying to take a child bride to steal her family fortune? I’m tuning in with my 8-year-old son. The Netflix Original series Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events is a wonderfully dark comedy that is surprisingly family-friendly for older kids. While at first glance parents would likely ban this show from their homes what with a diabolical murderer constantly threatening young children at knife point, if you give it a chance you’ll likely find what I found — a deliciously dark, incredibly endearing, seriously fun show that kids 8... -
How to Deal With Your Kids’ Sensitive Skin in Winter
29 Jan 2017 | 5:42 pmMy kids aren’t just white, they’re translucent. And they seem to have inherited my Irish complexion, which means anything and everything irritates their skin. Especially during winter. New England winters are unforgiving and come February, we often wonder why we willingly live in a place where the air hurts your face. As the frigid weather tightens its icy grip and sends temperatures plummeting, parents in cold weather climates turn their attention to how to battle the dry skin, chapped lips, and eczema that plagues kids for 4 months out of the year. Did you know the prevalence of eczema has increased among almost all kids under 18 from 2000 to 2010, according to the CDC? Whether you’re talking black kids... -
Buzz-buzz
21 Jan 2017 | 7:28 am“I SAID IT’S TIME TO GO!” This experience started out like all the rest the last few months — with the best of intentions and me trying to find my back to involved fatherhood. And then it ended like it always has for the last few months — with me getting impatient and yelling at the boys. This time it was Sam. I took him to walk the dog down the dirt road across the street from our house. The road ends at a small pond that Sam loves, mainly because it’s now frozen over and he discovered that when you throw a rock on a frozen pond it makes a really cool noise. But when 3-year-olds find something new and fun, they want to do it again. And again. And again and again and again. Over and over until they’ve...

A New Year’s 2017 Update
20 Jan 2017 | 3:32 pmAs the New Year turns to 2017 we have launched a few new things to help you stay motivated to learn to read Japanese. First and foremost we have 9 new levels in Kanjilicious: Game Your Japanese. This brings the total to 20 levels and leaderboards, and you can review over 300 characters, score your progress, and challenge friends through GameCenter. Our hero Riki has begun training in Tokyo, but he’s having some trouble adjusting to the Hiromichi stable. He’s made a new friend, Nami, the daughter of the stable’s oya-kata, and the oya-kata himself has taken Riki under his wing with some extra practice. The Science of Forgetting
12 Dec 2016 | 10:59 pmIn 1885, Hermann Ebbinghaus, a German psychologist, extrapolated the hypothesis of the exponential nature of forgetting. The upshot of his work is that the brain will only retain a fraction of what it has learned over the long term without a series of reviews, spread over time, using an idea that over the years has been formalized into a concept known as spaced repetition. Ebbinghaus was an advocate of experimentation to prove his theories. Ebbinghaus used simple acoustic encoding and maintenance rehearsal for which a list of words could used and remembered. Learning is affected by prior knowledge and understanding, he had to have something that could be easily memorized but which had no prior cognitive... -
The Benefits of Being Bilingual

Psychology of High Scores, Leaderboards, & Competition

This is a great intro into some of the psychological motivations within gameplay, including the insight that designing games that keep players in smaller pools of competitors generally keeps all participants more engaged—apparently, people don’t like being small frogs in big ponds. Recipes for Magical Life Memories
10 Jan 2017 | 8:11 amI’m pretty lucky to work with brands that resonate with me. My new partner, Stouffer’s touches my heart in a couple ways. For starters, they’re a very real part of my childhood. I bet you’re the same. But then I learned about their history and how they started as a family restaurant in 1924 with delicious recipes from Mrs. Stouffer. Those are the same recipes used today with ingredients you’d find in your own home – part of their “Kitchen Cupboard” commitment. My recent history lesson into Stouffer’s caused me to remember this story about my own mom. And her treasured recipes. I dare you to read this without thinking about those special recipes from your family. Enjoy! I’m a lucky son. One who is blessed... -
Stories from the Scrapbook: Resiliency
1 Jan 2017 | 3:59 pmI spent a good chunk of my New Years Eve looking though boxes and folders of old family photos. Some dated back to my parents’ childhood and some of them were from my own. But mostly I walked down the memory lane of my own three children’s lives. It’s interesting looking at yesteryear photos of your own children. The memories are still clear (well, mostly) and the emotions of the moments are still alive. What I noticed has changed, as I looked at hundreds upon hundreds of photos of my kids, is the meaning that many of the images now hold. Parental mileage brings many things. Excess wrinkles. Weight. And, without sounding too arrogant, some perspective. The above picture of my youngest son, Drew, is a... -
Good-Bye to the Lottery Dog of Dogs
28 Nov 2016 | 9:24 amOur Golden Retriever, Lucca, died about an hour ago. And I’m not sure what to do with his leash – the only thing I came home with after our 8:00 am appointment with his vet where we went through with what I know was the humane decision. I’ve walked in the door with Lucca’s leash thousands of times over the last 11+ years – and I’ve religiously put his leash in the top drawer of the dresser by the front door. Tucked away for his next walk. His next walk… He got his name after a family trip to Lucca, Italy – a tiny town in Tuscany just west of Florence. We were there over the Christmas holidays. Not prime tourist season. But it was prime season for incredible memories. Lucca, the town, was warm and friendly... -
Want to Do Something Really Good Today? Ensure a Child in a Developing Country Gets Vaccinated.

You can ensure that ONE MORE CHILD in a developing country receives a free vaccine simply by commenting on this post, sharing it, or liking it on Facebook or Twitter. Thank you so much. Now if you have time, please read on… * My favorite writing style is where I plant a seed or an idea and let the reader come to their own conclusions as to the underlying meaning of the story. But...

The 4 Year Old Photographer
23 Jan 2017 | 4:03 pmRecently I was fortunate enough to have a Nikon D5500 Digital Camera come into my life. The minute I took my first photo, I realized that photography was something I should have picked up YEARS ago. 4 years ago to be exact…when my son, Grayson was born. Don’t get me wrong, I have PLENTY of memories over the past 4 years from tens of thousands (that number is correct) of iPhone photos. With all of the new smartphone technology over the years, increased megapixel options, filters apps, etc. one would think that’s all you need to document life. I definitely was one of those people and it did get the job done. It just didn’t give me the joy that this camera brings me. I find myself shooting EVERYTHING... -
How Star Wars Legos Helped My Child Go To Bed On-Time
4 Jan 2017 | 7:12 pmGrayson has been into Star Wars since he was 2 1/2 years old. He will be 4 on January 25th. His Star Wars obsession has led to everything Star Wars, including Legos, recently. That being said, I started buying him small Lego kits that would keep his attention and would be fun to build together on nights we were relaxing at home. We have built AT-AT , X-Wing, and Star Scavenger sets from LEGO so far and it’s been fun! The LAST thing I thought was that this new venture would somehow help Grayson go to sleep on time. Now, lets get into that! Grayson has trouble when it’s bedtime. He’d rather lay with me on the couch until he falls asleep then I have to carry him upstairs to bed. Sometimes it’s... -
It Took A 4 Year Old And A Train to Remind Me That Everyday Is A Gift…
17 Dec 2016 | 10:39 amMy sister gave me a remote controlled steam train engine set for Grayson last week. It’s the same train set that Grayson has played with the past 2 years at holiday get togethers at our relative’s house. He absolutely loves it. Its been wrapped and in my trunk for the past week because the box was fairly large and I did not want Grayson to see it before Christmas. I thought about giving it to him last week but he knows Santa comes on Christmas and I didn’t want to spoil the surprise. This morning, my sister Courtney shot me a text and asked me if I gave the train set to Grayson yet. I replied, “No, I wanted to wait until Christmas. Should I give it to him now?” She said, “Yes, that’s half the... -

We Are Walking To Chicago To Ride The “Paris Wheel”!
20 Nov 2016 | 2:20 pmWhen I travel, I always bring Grayson home a magnet from the city I was in. It’s something that his mom started so I just decided to run with it! A magnet of the Chicago skyline has been stuck to my refrigerator for years and Grayson has never really mentioned it…until now! Long story short, he pulled the magnet off the fridge, said he wants to “Go to Chicago and ride the Paris (ferris) wheel,” and went on to say it’s “right up the street!” See for yourself! What you don’t see, is Grayson packing his bags for the last 6 hours and telling me every 3 minutes that we are “leaving in 15 minutes on a plane when it touches down” and that I “need to pack now”! I guess a trip to Chicago to ride the “Paris...

How To Raise Successful Kids
3 Feb 2017 | 9:34 amEvery parent has the same basic goals for their kids, no matter how different our lifestyles, parenting techniques, or circumstances may be: We all want them to grow up healthy, happy, and, hopefully, successful. Not necessarily rich, but self-sufficient and content. Unfortunately, no one really knows how to make that happen. Sure, we have suspicions about what will work, and we do our best to enact parenting policies that encourage our kids to develop in the ways we want them to, but when it comes down to it, we’re all guessing. Well, most of us are. I love articles like this one from Business Insider. It lists, courtesy of SCIENCE!, the qualities/methods parents of “successful” children have in common.... -
Breakfast Bonding
1 Feb 2017 | 6:20 amWhat is it with children and Cheerios? My 6-year-old eats them, my baby attempts to eat them, they both spill them and play with them and throw them around. Meanwhile, my cupboard is full of them, my floor is littered with them, the backseat of my car is covered in them, and I’m constantly stepping on them. I bet you are too. Because when you have kids, you have Cheerios. There’s no way around it. My sons and I bond over a lot of things. Star Wars, superheroes, not listening to Mom and Buried, pooping our pants. Unfortunately, breakfast is not something we typically bond over, and that’s my fault. I stink at breakfast. I don’t just mean I stink at making it – although definitely that too – I mean I stink... -
Honesty Is The Best Policy (For Women)
27 Jan 2017 | 7:04 am*HUSBAND SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT* When your wife asks you how she looks, you must do the following: 1. Look her over 2. Look her over for a reasonable enough amount of time that your answer is credible 3. Don’t look her over for so long as to imply untoward scrutiny or the existence of flaws heretofore unseen and/or altogether nonexistent 4. Tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth 5. But don’t say anything except “You look great!” Failure to follow those guidelines will result in, at the very least, a frantic wardrobe change — which is likely to be accompanied by a souring mood and/or extreme lateness to your event and also has the potential to reach catastrophic, even nuclear... -
I Have A Favorite Kid And So Do You
24 Jan 2017 | 8:43 amI have a favorite kid. So do you, whether you admit it or not. Don’t worry, we don’t judge around here. So you have a favorite child, big whoop! We all do! It’s okay. In fact, like Robin Williams told Matt Damon, it’s not your fault. It’s your kids’ fault. Before everyone starts losing their minds over what a terrible parent I am (again!), let me be clear: My love for my two children is unconditional and unwavering. But my like for my children? That’s a different story. Just because, sometimes, I’d rather hang out with my blissfully ignorant happy-go-lucky baby who can’t talk back than with my hyper, defiant, so-much-like-me-it-makes-me-hate-myself six-year-old doesn’t mean I don’t love them both... -
Boys Can Be Feminists Too
20 Jan 2017 | 7:32 amI wanted a daughter. Last year, before my second son was born, I was hoping to have a girl. (We already had a boy, and I wanted someone to prefer me for a change!) I don’t care anymore, of course. I love both my boys and wouldn’t trade them for anything. Well, maybe for a little peace and quiet, but that’s not gonna happen. Besides, according to just about every guy I know who has a daughter, I’m lucky. Having girls is scary, they say, especially when they get older — especially for dads. I hope to help make it a little easier. Girls have it rough. After all, they have to deal with boys! Sometimes, “dealing” with boys is a reference to the absurdities of relationships and the land mines of...

4 Feb 2017 | 11:20 amAs Toy Fair New York and Star Wars Celebration Orlando approach, Star Wars fans are getting exceptionally eager to learn what plans have been made to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Star Wars Saga. While May is likely the big month (A New Hope was released on 5-25-77), we've got some time before that, and the folks at Hasbro have no shortage of new toys yet to come. Check out a full gallery below, along with details on some new offerings beyond the realm of figures! <ul><li>TOY FAIR</li><li>Hasbro</li><li>ROGUE ONE: A STAR...</li></ul> -

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare goes 90s Horror Movie with First DLC...
3 Feb 2017 | 11:55 pmI'm gonna have to get in on this action soon - the first DLC for last year's Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare has arrived with Sabotage. In addition to four all-new multi-player maps, what's particularly intriguing is that the COD Zombies experience continues in 90s horror movie style with Rave in the Redwoods. Dropped into a lakeside camp (a la Friday the 13th and countless others), players can fight zombies with 90s "stereotype characters" - Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors, Suicide Squad) as “the Hip Hop Wannabe;” Seth Green (Robot Chicken, Austin Powers) as “the Kandi Raver;” Jay Pharoah (White Famous, Saturday Night Live) as “the Grunge Rocker;” and Sasheer Zamata (Saturday Night Live, Inside Amy...

3 easy steps to a romantic steakhouse dinner at home
24 Jan 2017 | 4:03 amI have partnered with Life of Dad and Idahoan® Foods for this campaign, but my opinions are my own. When Christy and I were dating in college, one of our “go to” dates was to go to one of the local steakhouses and order potato soup. We would sit and talk for hours, munching on the endless rolls they would bring us and savoring every bite of the creamy soup. It was something we did quite often. We even went there for potato soup and rolls after I proposed to her (and almost dropped the engagement ring into the Doe River). I guess you could say that potato soup has a special place in our family’s story. Since those college days, we have eaten at some pretty memorable restaurants over the years, including... -
Worst.President.Ever.
19 Jan 2017 | 10:47 amBy Unknown – White house, Public Domain, Link When it comes to political discourse, it appears that we have become a nation of extremes. Many have taken the statement “If you’re not for us, you’re against us” into the political realm and then multiplied it to the extreme. With this type of approach to American politics, anyone who even remotely disagrees with you is obviously anti-American and full of hate. And if the conversation shouting match goes on for any length of time, one side is sure to accuse the other side of sounding like Nazi Germany or Stalinist Russia. Of course, it is inevitable during conversations like this that someone eventually accuses a recent president of being the “worst president... -
Living life and arriving safely at death
16 Jan 2017 | 10:00 am*This post contains affiliate links. You can read more in my Disclosure Policy. Thank you for your ongoing support.* “Be careful.” “Stay safe.” I say these phrases a lot. It’s habit. And I don’t really think that’s a bad thing. Safety is important – especially when it comes to our children. Unfortunately, we’ve become so concerned about safety that we act like it’s the only reason to live. We act like safety is the purpose of life. At least, I have acted like that from time to time. Mark Batterson has helped change my perspective about safety and the purpose of life. His book, In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day, is one of the books that changed my life when I first read it. It’s a relatively short read,... -
Unpacking our Family Motto
2 Jan 2017 | 11:31 amDoes your family have a motto? I recently asked this on social media and here are some of the responses I received: @mattdantodd Work hard and be nice to people. I hung a print in the hallway. — Heather Sokol (@JustHeather) January 1, 2017 @mattdantodd choose joy. Which broken down really just means choose Jesus. — Kyle Reese (@KyleJReese) January 1, 2017 Those are some pretty good responses. If your family doesn’t have a motto, you might consider stealing borrowing one of these. Family mottos are kind of like mission statements. They can be a guiding force, helping to direct your family along the way. Even the House of El has a family motto (“Stronger Together,” according to the Supergirl TV... -
2016 in review
31 Dec 2016 | 9:50 amIn the past, I’ve recognized the arrival of a New Year with a retrospective Todd Top Ten List or the announcement of the year’s Matty (formerly known as Ralphie) Awards. After much soul searching and careful consideration, I have decided to indefinitely suspend these events. Is 2016 the worst year ever? When we look back on 2016, it’s hard to say it’s been anything but rough. Personally, this has been the most physically, emotionally, financially, and spiritually exhausting year I can remember. This has just plain worn me out. I don’t think I’m the only one. It appears that 2016 presidential contest sucked the life out of many people. And this transition to a new administration is causing angst on both...

Dad 2.0 Summit enters its record-breaking sixth year when it comes to San Diego, Feb. 9-12. On the Modern Dads Podcast, we have conference co-founders Doug French and John Pacini preview this year’s event — a national three-day meeting where marketers, social media leaders, blogging parents and regular dads get together to discuss the changing voice and perception of modern fatherhood. On this Modern Dads Podcast, — also known as Dad 2.017. Our talks covers how the conversation has evolved since its 2012 start in Austin — where a “doofus dad” diaper ad from Huggies had fathers up in arms... -
Melody Ellison: American Girl Enters the Civil Rights Movement
2 Feb 2017 | 6:45 amHistory has a song and sometimes it takes awhile for us to recognize its Melody. I’ve mentioned before that my mother integrated a school, and how I had the opportunity to visit the land that my ancestors worked as slaves, but those stories (and many others like them) can be difficult at times to convey to kids. Sometimes that history becomes unwieldy or difficult because it is so personal. Nonetheless they are crucial stories for us to learn, know, and pass on to the next generation. Sometimes that is done through personal stories, and sometimes that is done through fictional characters who portray the very times we are describing. The Melody Ellison doll by American Girl. American Girl recently... -
An Old Dog and the Tricks She is Teaching Our Family
1 Feb 2017 | 6:39 am(Contributed photo: Whit Honea) When we first realized she had lost her hearing, we were afraid that it would affect her quality of life. But rather than cower from the challenge, she owned it. ______ It is dark, and all of her world is asleep. She knows there are rules, and also that she is breaking them. It is all part of the thrill. She is stealth, and no one will ever suspect a thing. Valentine is 15 years old, according to the calendar, 105 when you factor for the canine. She was a gift to my wife on Valentine’s Day that many years ago. She had been sitting alone, a small puppy in a big cage, and fit warmly in the palm of my hand as a teary-eyed woman thanked me for saving a dog’s life the day before... -
Life as an At-Home Dad Among a ‘Sea of Yoga Pants’
30 Jan 2017 | 6:46 amHow does one write humorously about being an at-home father without slipping into the ol’ “dumb dad” tropes? How does a parent write about his or her children in a way that won’t embarrass them years down the road? Brian Craig of our Indianapolis Dads Group tackles those questions and also reads a couple of selections from his book Lone Pair of Blue Jeans in a Sea of Yoga Pants in this latest edition of The Modern Dads Podcast. Lone Pair of Blue Jeans in a Sea of Yoga Pants compiles some of the best posts Craig wrote in his award-winning “A Dad Influence” column for Indy’s Child magazine, which he writes under the pen name Pete Gilbert. The humorous memoir, which he self-published, covers how he... -
Women’s March Divides by Gender, Still Unites Family
26 Jan 2017 | 6:33 amThe Women’s March attracted an estimated 250,000 on Jan. 21, 2017, in Chicago, where our author’s family had to make some tough decisions about attending. (Photo credit: Chicago Man via Foter.com / CC BY-NC) Our mother-daughter and father-son split Saturday morning was one of necessity. We had to solve for multiple events happening at the same time. Mama and daughter were up early that day of the Women’s March, packing snacks and deciding what to wear. Mama had furiously knit three of the famous “pussyhats” out of pink yarn — for friends and for my daughter. She’s now making three more for friends as far away as England while my daughter continues proudly wearing hers to school all week. As they...

In care of…
14 Jan 2017 | 12:53 pmI’m so tired of this, the man thought as he slowly wrote yet another return address on yet another form for yet another bill that wasn’t his own. The pile of paperwork was enormous. Electricity. Propane. Telephone. Internet. Magazine subscriptions. The cable company and the town hall. The accountant and the broker and the lawyer. And so many insurance companies. One change-of-address form after another, each requiring the same information: his father’s name and then the man’s own name and address. And between the two names, just three little words: in care of. The man had been slogging through his days for many months, bearing the burdens of his own life on his shoulders, as well as the great weight... -
The Secret Place
1 Jan 2017 | 11:05 amThe house stood empty. Dad and I stood exhausted. With our backs against our overloaded trucks we stared at the home where time had knitted our family together since 1960. Mom was gone now, and we were packing up. Bright rectangles on the walls showed where hanging photographs had kept the world from fading. The house echoed and whispered with far off and long ago sounds, like a shell held to your ear, a gigantic shell where something wonderful used to live. Dad looked down at his shoes. “I suppose we ought to leave,” he said, quietly. Neither of us moved. This would be the last time. This would be forever. We would never leave this place again because we would never come back. “Dad,” I finally... -
A letter of encouragement to a friend
11 Dec 2016 | 1:25 pmBack in October I wrote an encouraging letter to a pastor who had recently become my friend, and who was preparing to give a message at a conference that my wife and I would be attending. I have decided to include the guts of my letter as a post, hoping that it will be an encouragement to all of us. I have been thinking a lot about your upcoming final message at the conference, “Living as a faithful parent in a hostile culture”. And I have been praying for you, your message, and your hearers. Karen and I have signed up for the conference, so we will see you there. Parenting (and being a father, in particular), has been one of the great passions of my life for decades, both personally and as my ministry... -
Girl with a grey sweatshirt
21 Oct 2016 | 10:16 amOn a recent autumn day, as I worked to get the last few outdoor chores done before we were plunged into another Maine winter, I was scraping old dry caulk from the window frame in the door that leads to the back yard when my 23 year-old daughter Amanda darted past me on some errand. My daughter is a living stream of consciousness who never seems to stop moving or thinking or being clever; she is an energized bit of cheery momentum, like a butterfly, but with a better sense of direction. Seeing the open window as she whisked by, she seized the opportunity to be spontaneously entertaining, stepped behind the paneless frame, blurted out, “Cool, it’s like a portrait,” turned toward me and struck a deep... -
Shouting into the fog
6 Jul 2016 | 3:21 pmEDITOR’S NOTE: This site has been all but dormant for months now because I just haven’t taken the time to update anything. My dad was diagnosed with dementia last winter (although we’d suspected it for years) and the floodgates of trouble opened up. I won’t go into details, but the tentacles of delusion, deception, and deceit go way beyond the diagnosis, and my sister and I and the rest of our family are all trying to pick up the pieces. And my 90 year-old dad is right in the middle of the mess, but he doesn’t even understand that there is a mess. Anyway, I wrote this back in May, and am only getting to publish it now. This has been, and will continue to be, one of the greatest challenges I have ever faced...

Always Bet on Yourself
2 Feb 2017 | 11:36 amWe talk a lot about the concept of goal setting – from ways to achieve better fitness to how to be a better parent to just general ways to crush life as a guy in the 21st century. Let’s talk about the importance of taking action on the scariest of goals and why you should always bet on yourself to succeed. I’ll use my story as an example of how times may be tough, but they always work out in the end if we keep our focus laser sharp and our dedication relentless. The greater part of my 20s were spent as a small-town celeb of sorts as a television sports anchor and reporter. It was my mug all over your high-def LCD screens delivering the best scores and sports news in the area. Sounds like a pretty awesome... -
Why Can’t Parents Admit When They’re Wrong?
26 Jan 2017 | 12:11 pmWhy Can’t Parents Admit When They’re Wrong? I spoke about being an extremist parent recently but that’s only a small fraction of parents (hopefully). As far as most of us go, however, we also have a lot to improve on, so much so we may want to add today’s post to our New Year’s goals. When it comes to admitting to our children that we were wrong, why doesn’t it come natural to us as parents? Is there something “wrong” with a parent who can’t admit to oneself, and to their kids (and possibly others around them), that they may have been mistaken about something? Hint: Yes, the answer to that is yes, there is something wrong with that parent. Let me preface that this article is about to slap you... -

It’s all about profiling fellow fathers out there in the world to learn more about what makes us all tick as dads. Along the way, we may all learn from each other to discover some hardcore knowledge about this thing we call... -
Yo! Momma: I want to do more around the house
17 Jan 2017 | 9:10 amWelcome to our monthly joint venture we like to call, Yo! Momma. We open up the mailbag to answer the questions from our most faithful readers and bring definitive resolution in the age-old battle of the sexes. We do so in the only way we know how: with zero filter and 100-percent brutal honesty. Last time, we took on the topic of sensitive boobs and how to navigate around a perennially sore subject. In the latest edition collaboration of the best parenting bloggers on the Internet, we’re discussing the tactful approach for men to get more involved around the house, even when wifey isn’t too keen on the concept. You ask. We attempt to answer … and then Rachel from Whine & Cheez(Its) drops some...
