2016: The Year that Needed to Relax.

Did anyone happen to notice 2016 was crazy? Like haul me off to the loony bin nuts. But hey, we’re nearing the finish line so let’s all hope 2017 finds a way to relax a bit. Seriously 2017, calm down a little.

The last 12 months had us busier than ever—from film, to games, to pen & ink splatters. The ride was wild, and if there’s one thing 2016 could say for itself, it wasn’t dull.

On the interactive front at Insomniac Games, we jumped into the deep end of VR with Oculus and the launch title Edge of Nowhere, the brawler Feral Rites, and the magic fight club The Unspoken. We contributed the majority of the concept art for each title along with tons of models and marketing art. The platform has lots of potential so be sure to give it a try when you can. Several Best Buy stores around the country have demo stations—launch some fireballs with the Touch Controllers in The Unspoken, it’s a blast!

We also spent a good deal of time with our old pals Ratchet and Clank. On the PS4, it was awesome to see the game included in Time Magazine’s best looking games list, but most importantly the project celebrated the fans (both young and old). Thanks for making the adventure such a success!

The Ratchet movie also hit theaters, and while the critics and box office threw their punches, we also saw lots of fans connecting with the characters in a new way. We really enjoyed working on designs for the show and the crew at Rainmaker were a joy to collaborate with.

In June we also found time to release our 7th book project. SHRED Volume 2 was our high-five to our favorite inks and brushes. And teeth. Thanks for all the support, and while we sold out of our print version a few months back, digital copies can still be yours! We also updated the shop with our last round of traditional pieces for the year. You know that holiday cash is burning a monster shaped hole in your pocket.

And 2016 wouldn’t be complete without Inktober. Jake’s yearly throw down with ink has exploded into a worldwide ruckus and we always look forward to stepping away from pixels for awhile.

We’re always thankful to the CreatureBoxers out there, and we have lots planned for 2017. We have some new books on deck along with some other surprises, so we better get back to work. Have a great holiday folks.

And 2017, seriously. Relax.

SHRED 2 Available Now!

We’re excited to announce the launch of our newest book: SHRED Volume 2! Spanning 2 years of work, the collection includes over 160 designs and celebrates a love for traditional mediums. We’ve also included over 10 pages of tutorials and a companion material list to guide fellow cartoonists through our favorite tools and techniques. We’ve taken a tremendous amount of care with each layout and every scan preserves the subtleties of the source art. Our shop is chock full of more info and samples along with some new original illustrations! Monstrous!

HeroesCon 2016: AA-1028 & 1029

Howdy folks! Well, we’re in the final stretch before HeroesCon 2016 (June 17-19) and we recently received our table info. If you’re in the area, swing by Tables AA-1028 & 1029 in Artists Alley for some CreatureBox calamity.

We’re excited to announce we’ll be launching our newest book: SHRED Volume 2 at the show. This new collection weighs in at 64 pages and includes over 160 characters across a range of styles and mediums. The book also incorporates over 10 pages of tutorials as we share our techniques with a variety of tools. Along with Volume 2, we’ll have a handful of remaining copies of Volume 1 in addition to a few other surprises. We’ll also have several originals for sale ranging from your favorite superheroes to lovingly rendered robots.

If you have something specific in mind, we’ll also be taking Commissions so put on your thinking cap and put us to work. Prices vary based on size and mediums and you can get a peek at previous adventures over on our Instagram feed.

And for those looking to hold a paper paddle, the Heroes Art Auction on Saturday night is always a blast. This year we went with cult and mainstream classics: Vagrants and Devils!

Ratchet & Clank

April is a big month for us. On April 12th, Ratchet & Clank rockets onto the PlayStation 4. And just a couple weeks later, on April 29th, the dynamic duo will find themselves on the big screen in their first feature film. “Surreal” couldn’t even begin to describe it.

We’ve been extremely fortunate to be part of the Ratchet franchise from the very beginning. Back then, a small team of scrappy developers set out to introduce a couple new heroes to the PlayStation universe. The production of R&C for the PlayStation 2 was fast paced, unpredictable and in many cases, instinctive. Almost on a subconscious level the team connected with the material and worked tirelessly to bring a memorable, all ages experience to gamers.

Fast forward 15 years, and many of those same developers found themselves in a truly unique situation. What if you had an opportunity to re-envision the work: to leverage artistic growth and gameplay experience while broadening the original vision. It’s the closest experience we’ve had to a time machine–sitting beside a younger self re-imagining concepts, while building, refining and expanding the franchise. We had an absolute blast.

Ratchet & Clank for PS4 is many things: classic, modern, a graphical powerhouse, a new beginning. But most importantly, to us, the game represents the passion of a dedicated team who wanted to create the absolute best Ratchet experience possible.

Alongside the game production, we were equally fortunate to serve as the Lead Visual Designers for the feature film. From day one, the entire movie staff displayed a remarkable desire to embrace the franchise and craft a truly authentic experience. Insomniac was involved each step of the way and everyone joined forces to celebrate the source material. From the humor, the visuals, classic rock star voice cast and galactic action, this was the Ratchet franchise through and through. Watching them on screen was a lot like seeing your best friend get their first big-time acting gig. Yup, “surreal”.

So if you’re into style, humor and heart, please help us spread the word. Ratchet & Clank represents a 15-year passion project for us and we can’t wait to see where their next chapter leads.
