Living With Diabetes
Photo

Hi, my name is Jackson and I'm going to tell you a few things about myself. I was diagnosed with type one diabetes six years ago on October 2, 2006. I was six at that time but am 13 now. I live in the amazing state of Alabama with my mom and my brother. I also live with my dad, step-mom, and step-sister. I play football for my middle school. I play on the offensive/defensive line. I'm in Gifted Literature which is a class for over-achievers. I am 5'8, 150 pounds and am a 8th grader.

Now, lets get to the important stuff, shall we? So, like I said, I was diagnosed at age six in 2006. I am 13 now. Before I was diagnosed I got really sick. I was using the restroom a lot and drinking so much water. I slept all the time, was sent home from school a lot. Turns out, I had diabetes in my system for a while. But one thing triggered it, and that was an asthma attack. After that asthma attack I started showing all the symptoms. My mom took me to my pediatrician to get me checked out. My mom suggested that my blood sugar was low because diabetes comes from both sides of our family. Instead, it was over 500. We rushed over to the hospital immediately. I was in there for 11 days. My highest sugar during that period was over 800.

While putting on my makeup, my 8-year-old diabetic daughter was looking at a lipstick case with several different colors in it. She said, "Hey, this looks like my ketone strip -- this shade is high and this one is trace."
