Community Leadership Summit 2018 through Oregon Convention Center From the site: The Community Leadership Summit 2018 brings together community leaders, organizers and managers and the projects and organizations that are interested in growing and empowering a strong community. The event pulls together the leading minds in community management, relations and online collaboration to discuss, debate and continue to refine the art of building an effective and capable community. At the heart of Community Leadership Summit 2018 is an open unconference-style event in which everyone who attends is welcome to lead and contribute sessions on any topic that is relevant. These sessions are very much discussion sessions: the participants can interact directly, offer thoughts and experience, and share ideas and questions. These unconference sessions are also augmented with a series of presentations from leaders in the field, panel debates and networking opportunities. Note from the person posting this: This event is free, easy to pop into and check out, and great for anyone interested in community. There's a strong tech focus as this is right before OSCON in the same venue, so if you work in tech and are interested in anything related to communities, it's especially useful. |

Debugging the Technical Interview – Mozilla Corp How we interview and who we hire has a huge impact on our engineering communities. On the one hand we want to reduce risks of a poor fit; on the other hand, we don’t want to overlook great people and end up spending unnecessary time and resources on extra technical interviews. This workshop is focused on improving your skills and processes as a software technical interviewer or hiring manager. Using our expertise from conducting over 20,000 interviews, we’ll unpack the hiring process from end-to-end and dig into how to not only improve accuracy and consistency but also raise the bar and level the playing field. Whether you are currently hiring for specific roles, or generally passionate about hiring and interviewing, you’ll leave with specific methods and materials for improving both your interview approach, hiring decisions and candidate experiences. About Karat: At Karat.io our goal is to professionalize every interview so that people show up capable and empowered to do their best work. We’ve combined rich data and research with our shared experiences across engineering, recruiting and consulting to create the world’s largest technical interviewing solution. We are the trusted, consistent Interview Engineer who conducts the first round of interviews on behalf of top engineering organizations. By making technical interviewing a dedicated job, we highlight its importance to both companies and candidates. The more interviews we complete, the more consistent data we have to help every client build world-class hiring processes. The result? A responsive, first-in-class candidate experience, accelerated hiring, improved onsite-to-offer ratios, and hours and hours of time reinvested into coding and shipping product. Rejected Oscon Talks : Charity Drive and Critique : A collaboration between #FullStackPDX and the neo4j Team! – WeWork Custom House This month we have lined up a super special event!!!!! ———————————————————————— When the neo4j team reached out to us to setup an event during OSCON we jumped all over this. Not only will we be having the presentations you are all used to, but we will be welcoming a number of talks that did not make the cut for the OSCON conference. On top of this, 100% of the ticket proceeds will be donated to Planned Parenthood https://www.plannedparenthood.org/. Just like fight club, if this is your first night attending, you have to present. We have all heard the pitch before, and we make no exceptions to this rule. Since this meetup is in the larger space we will have a projector you can hook up to, or just use the sound of your voice. What should you present? Well, we do not spec that. Discussing your startup, recent project, code reviews, business ideas, etc. are all applicable. There is not a required length of time to present. This can be a live prototype or even a set of powerpoint slides. You do not have to know how to code to present your dream, and we are HERE TO HELP you. Presentations are meant to be collaborative, not the traditional meetup style where a presenter talks like a teacher for a very long time and saves questions for the end. We use a timer and the group dynamic works to collaboratively prevent cross talk and side conversations. So bring your fun spirit, desire to learn, passion to help others, and let's have fun. ———————————————————————— Signups through meetup.com are required and seats are limited, so buy your tickets early because we usually sell out. We are self funded, and 100% of the revenue received is put back into the meetup costs. We will have top shelf pizza from Crown PDX (http://www.imperialpdx.com/the-crown/) so come HUNGRY for dinner!! Doors open at 6pm and we kick off on time. We start consuming the pizza at 6pm as well. After the concert of presentations we will walk over to Bailey's Taproom (http://www.baileystaproom.com/) to continue the evening. ———————————————————————— Location: WeWork Customs House : Community : When you check in ask for CP Handheld, they are our sponsor. The room is right to the left as you walk in. |

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Women + Tech Summer Soiree – Weiden & Kennedy Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-women-tech-summer-soiree-tickets-46660516862] is required to gain entry to this event Join us for our annual summer soiree, brought to you by PDX Women in Tech and Women Who Code, in partnership with Lesbians Who Tech, ChickTech, Girls Inc. and PyLadies, hosted by Wieden+Kennedy and sponsored by Cambia! Kimberlé W. Crenshaw, a civil rights advocate, feminist and UCLA School of Law and Columbia Law professor specializing in race and gender issues, coined the term intersectionality to describe how people's various identities (racial, gender, class. etc.) intersect and overlap, creating a cumulative effect in the discrimination they receive. At this year’s summer soiree, we dedicate our theme to looking at the future of tech through an intersectional lens. Otherwise, the technologies that are being developed today will not consider the needs of large swaths of our population and thus will not succeed. This night is dedicated to introducing you to leaders in the spaces of blockchain, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence to demonstrate the accessibility of these spaces to the people of our community. We also hope to carve a path forward, together, where we can push for the change that needs to happen in these industries. To support this discussion our conversation starter for the evening is “how can tech be more accessible to underrepresented communities?” The summer soiree will feature a panel. To see full list of panelists, visit the Eventbrite link listed above. During the event, we’ll have an Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director. About Cambia Health Solutions Cambia Health Solutions, headquartered in Portland, Oregon, is dedicated to transforming health care. Our company reaches more than 70 million Americans nationwide, including more than two million people in the Pacific Northwest who are enrolled in our regional health plans. Please plan to arrive on time to grab your cool beverage and get a seat, since the program will start promptly at 5:45. We will be giving away a PDXWIT tank to the first 100 people who check-in. Agenda: 5:30 p.m. - Doors open 5:45 p.m. - Introductions 6:00 p.m. - Panel Begins 7:15 p.m. - Networking begins Event FAQ: Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms? A: Yes! Q: Is the space ADA accessible? A: Yes! Q: Will there be food and drink at this event? A: Yes! Q: What is the parking situation? A: Street parking only Q: Is there secured bike parking? Azure Logic Apps - The other side of Azure Serverless Architecture @ Portland Azure User Group SoftSource Consulting Please RSVP on the Meetup.com page Join us Monday, July 30 at SoftSource for a technical presentation on Azure Logic Apps! This presentation by Samuel Adranyi is a continuation of exploring the various Serverless solutions Microsoft Azure offers. Logic App Service is an integration and workflow engine with per-built connectors to popular SaaS solutions like Salesforce, Dropbox, and Google services. Essentially it's an easy way to move data from Salesforce to Office 365 or to another cloud service. A logic app begins with a trigger (like 'When an account is added to Dynamics CRM') and after firing can begin many combinations actions, conversions, and condition logic. Logic Apps is a great choice when orchestrating different Azure Functions in a process - especially when the process requires interacting with an external system or API. More information about the service here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/services/logic-apps/ |

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) How to Navigate the Tech Field: A Beginners Guide – New Relic Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-how-to-navigate-the-tech-field-a-beginners-guide-tickets-43350506532] is required to gain entry to this event Many people starting out in the software industry experience frustration when work conversations are riddled with acronyms or tech jargon they do not understand. They become overwhelmed by the enormous amount of information to learn and do not know where to start. To rectify that, we have a group of women speaking who can demystify some of the tools, jargon, and jobs around software: Polina Vorozheykina, a software engineer at New Relic, will share her experience entering the industry into a far more senior team of 12 engineers. She will cover useful terminology to know, how to go about asking questions, and how to begin building broad software expertise. Ashley Puls, a principal engineer and architect at New Relic, will cover some useful tools and terminology engineers encounter on a daily basis. Elisa Binette, the senior manager of Site Reliability Engineering at New Relic, will demystify some of the roles and job titles used in the technology industry. What’s a full stack, front end, or backend engineer? What’s a DBA? What are the key differences between a senior, lead, or engineering manager? Afterwards, beginning engineers should better understand common technology terms and the desired skills within each role. They should have a “lay of the land” and feel empowered to go out and learn. Agenda: 5:30 p.m. - Doors open 6:00 p.m. - Introduction 6:10 p.m. - Talks begin 7:00 p.m. - Q&A, networking 7:30 p.m. - Event ends Event FAQ: Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms? A: Yes Q: Is the space ADA accessible? A: Yes Q: Where there be food and drink at this event? A: Yes, pizza and refreshments will be provided. Q: What is the parking situation? A: There is paid parking around the building. Q: Is there secured bike parking? A: No, there is no secure bike parking. Q: Should I consider using public transportation? A: Yes, public transportation is best. Purpose: PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. AgilePDX: Mob Programming – Concordia University George R. White Library & Learning Center Mob Programming is a software development practice with many benefits - it raises code quality, removes knowledge silos, minimizes mental fatigue, and more. In practice it feels more like a bulldozer than a racecar - unstoppable and thorough. The core of mob programming is pointing many pairs of eyes on a single problem, pushing all the code through a single keyboard. Each month we'll explore different methods for learning to mob well and reaping the rewards of this practice as soon as possible on your own team. We may choose to head over to McMennamin's Kennedy School for food, drink, and talk afterwards. Facilitator Bio: Willem Larsen is a senior software developer at Hunter Industries. He has been speaking at Agile conferences on improving collaboration since 2009. He is the creator of accelerated team learning tools such as the Mob Programming role-playing game and Code Cooking (with Emmanuel Gaillot), author of the Language Hunter's Kit, co-author of 5 Rules For Accelerated Learning, founder of Language Hunters (a non-profit organization dedicated to improving communities of learning in technology, language, science, and music), and both a wildlife tracker and Search and Rescue tracker. |

Transitioning into the tech industry can be scary, intimidating and for some, insurmountable. Since those of us who have been around for a while may have forgotten the struggle, this month we are asking ourselves how we can make space for those who are new. If you are new, we’d love to hear from you how others can help. While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community. An employee of Marmoset will provide an introduction to the company and share open job opportunities. Lynn Krogseng, experienced Full Stack Developer, will tell us about returning to tech after a long absence. Kimberly Embry, BSE intern at Jama, will talk about pivoting into the tech field. During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking: An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director. Table Topics to help break the ice. A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected. Agenda: 4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking 5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers 6:30 p.m. - Event ends Event FAQ: Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms? A: They are gender neutral Q: Is the space ADA accessible? A: Mostly, please let me know if you need the garage doors open for this event upon arrival. Provides easier entry Q: Will there be food and drink at this event? A: We are planning to provide light food. I believe you are bringing the beer? University of Portland is sponsoring and bringing the beverages! Q: What is the parking situation? A: We have a small lot behind the building, people are welcome to try there, otherwise there should be ample street parking at that time. Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance? A: You may choose from the patio entry or the door on Lincoln for folks to come in. If it's nice, you'll probably want to use the patio. Q: Is there secured bike parking? A: No Q: Should I consider using public transportation? A: Either Q: Can I bring my dog? A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home. Please note there may be office pets present at this event. Purpose: PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

#FullStackPDX : August : Critique – WeWork Custom House Just like fight club, if this is your first night attending, you have to present. So bring your computer, fun spirit and desire to learn, and let's have fun. Signups through meetup.com are required and seats are limited, so buy your tickets early because we usually sell out. Location: WeWork Customs House : Room 1C : When you check in ask for CP Handheld, they are our sponsor. The room is right to the left as you walk in. |

Galois Tech Talk: Reasoning about Critical Systems using Refinement – Galois Inc, 421 SW 6th Ave. Suite 300, Portland, OR, USA, (3rd floor of the Commonwealth building) Abstract: Verification is often the dominant cost in the design of critical systems. In this talk, we advocate the use of refinement to reason about critical systems. The idea is that a system is correct if all of its observable behaviors are allowed by an abstract system that acts as the specification. For example, to verify a microprocessor using refinement, one shows that it implements its instruction set architecture. We provide a general introduction to refinement and motivate the need for various notions of refinement. We present various techniques and methods that have been developed to facilitate mechanized reasoning. We discuss the use of refinement for reasoning about distributed systems and hardware. Bio: Pete Manolios is a Professor in the College of Computer and Information Science at Northeastern. Pete’s primary research interest is mechanized formal verification and validation of computational systems. Pete has served as an Associate Editor of ACM Transactions on Design Automation of Electronic Systems (TODAES), as a member of the FMCAD, ACL2 and ITP Steering Committees, and is a member of the IFIP working group 1.9/2.15 on Verified Software. |

Female Founders Alliance: Ready Set Raise Program through TBD All - The FFA Ready Set Raise program is coming to on one of it's stops across America this summer. The event is tentatively on 8/10, location and all good things TBD. Watch this for updates and email me if you have questions. Kristine Campbell, FFA member in Oregon [email protected] Every founder knows raising capital is hard. And given that only 2% of venture capital is invested in female founded companies, what is already a moonshot for men is exponentially harder for women. You’re routinely and consistently underestimated, dismissed, ignored, ghosted, and judged by impossible standards - and that’s if you get in the door to begin with. Welcome to fundraising while female. Last year, FFA member Laura Malcolm (Founder/CEO of Give InKind) posted an idea to our online forum: she suggested that we join forces and help each other pitch to investors. That's why a few of us got together and organized our own version of a Demo Day. The result was last year’s Founders Showcase. Fast forward a year. Today, FFA has 4x more members, a growing team, a much bigger and more influential network of investors, and the help of world class sponsors like Davis Wright Tremaine’s Project W. So as we thought about reprising the event that put us on the map, we asked ourselves: what would a fundraising program look like if it was designed for female founders, by female founders? Our answer is called Ready. Set. Raise.™ We can't wait to tell you all about it. For now, please save the date for Demo Day on September 27th. Leslie Feinzaig Founder/CEO Female Founders Alliance |

CHIFOO Event: Ethics In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence – New Relic CHIFOO presents "Ethics In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence" with Cennydd Bowles, Cennydd Ltd! We mistakenly believe that technology is neutral; that inert objects cannot have moral characteristics. And so we make embarrassing blunders – racist chatbots, manipulative research, privacy violations – that undermine trust and harm those we should help. This is a dangerous trajectory. We urgently need a deeper ethical dialogue about emerging technology, and interaction design's role within it. This session, informed by many months of ongoing research, will discuss: -Why companies make poor ethical decisions, -The development of ethical thinking in other morally-charged disciplines, -Methods of engaging users in the ethics of emerging technology, -Ways for designers to engage positively and affect ethical outcomes, so that design decisions benefit not only ourselves but our wider communities and the world at large. About The Speaker Cennydd Bowles' (@Cennydd) biography will be published shortly. CHIFOO is celebrating its 25th anniversary all year long! Come join CHIFOO for our ninth speaker event for 2018's theme "Do the Right Thing- HCI Ethics: Where Do We Start?". |
