WSJ、NYT、BBC

This May, the 90th annual National Spelling Bee will feature its youngest contestant in history, 5-year-old Edith Fuller of Oklahoma.

Edith qualified for the national competition when she won her regional competition on Saturday, beating more than 50 other elementary and middle school students.

She correctly spelled 37 words, including "perestroika," "nisei," and her final winning word, "jnana."

KJRH/Tulsa

Edith's mom, Annie Fuller, told Tulsa World she only learned of her daughter's spelling skills last summer, when she correctly spelled "restaurant" despite having never been taught how.

“We knew there was something special there,” Fuller said.

After that, Edith and her mom began practicing for the bee, looking up words she misspelled along the way to learn their spellings and meanings.

“Learning the words was so educational. She was able to learn about different countries and cultures and different kinds of food,” Fuller said.

Despite her daughter's spelling genius, Fuller said she was simply impressed that Edith was able to stick out the four-hour competition.

“She likes to move around,” Fuller said. “I’m surprised she sat still for so long.”

KJRH/Tulsa

“It’s fun to share her with everyone. I knew she’d be a novelty, so I’m proud she held her own," Fuller said.

And the 5-year-old champion is feeling pretty great about the upcoming competition, too.

“I feel thankful,” Edith said.

Fritz, a beloved 4-month-old polar bear in Berlin, died Monday.

The cub, who was born at the zoo in November, was found Monday morning "lying listlessly" in the den with his mom, Tonja.

Fritz was treated with antibiotics and painkillers after blood tests showed concerning liver readings.

Sadly, Fritz died of liver inflammation later Monday evening.

“We can hardly believe it. We are devastated," director Dr. Andreas Knieriem said in a statement.

"It’s incredible how fond we had become of that little polar bear,” he said.

This is Alfredo Pelicci, a 28-year-old lawyer in Washington, DC.

On Thursday night, Pelicci was at DC restaurant Lupo Verde when he spotted Kellyanne Conway and her bodyguard in the hallway, he told BuzzFeed News.

"I walked right up to her and asked her for a selfie," he said. The adviser to President Trump obliged.

But instead of snapping a pic, he hit record instead.

On Thursday, the Indianapolis Star reported that Vice President Mike Pence had used a private AOL email account for official business while he was governor of Indiana — and it got hacked.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Pence criticized Hillary Clinton for having used a private email server while she was secretary of state, even calling her the "the most dishonest candidate for president of the United States since Richard Nixon."

"Similar to previous governors, during his time as governor of Indiana, Mike Pence maintained a state email account and a personal email account,” a spokesman for Pence told BuzzFeed News.

Quigley told BuzzFeed News she first spotted Clinton with Huma Abedin at the gate, and they said hi to her because she "was clearly looking starstruck."

She then snapped the photo while boarding, and sent it to a few friends (including a few who tweeted it) — but she didn't notice what Clinton was reading until later.

"I didn't notice anything until I texted it to my boss and he said, 'Do you see what she's looking at?'" Quigley said. "And then I died."

One woman, who told BuzzFeed News she is a "Christian mystic" named Donna, shouted a counter-prayer while brandishing a mirror at the witches to "reflect" the spell back on them.

Donna told BuzzFeed News she thought the spell casters were "on the verge of evil."

Multiple times, she called the binding spell "a slavery spell" because it's meant to "overpower someone else’s will," she said.

"These people have just been very hateful and nasty, and I wanted to reflect it back at them," she said. "I hope to protect Donald Trump...and I hope they will repent."

Witches around the world will join together at Trump Tower at midnight Friday to cast a spell on President Trump as "an act of magical self-defense."

The spell is a "binding spell. It's meant to use your personal energy to restrain Trump's power without causing any harm, Michael Hughes, a self-identified magician who organized the ritual, told BuzzFeed News.

"The analogy I use is, it’s not punching a Nazi in the face, it’s tying a Nazi up, taking his bullhorn away, and smashing his phone so he can’t tweet," Hughes said.

The mass ritual will take place at Trump Tower in New York, with smaller rituals happening in Los Angeles, Baltimore, Portugal, South Africa, and many other locations.

Facebook: bindtrump

In the absence of an orange candle, a white candle or baby carrot may be substituted. Additional components include the use of the Tower tarot card and a pre-written spell, which includes lines such as:

Bind him so that he shall not break our polity
Usurp our liberty
Or fill our minds with hate, confusion, fear, or despair
And bind, too,
All those who enable his wickedness
And those whose mouths speak his poisonous lies

"We’re going to do this every month on the waning crescent moon until he’s out of office," Hughes said.

"Ceremonial magicians, root workers, and kind of new age-y people" and "even some Christian witches" will be in attendance, Hughes said.

Hughes said he's received "at least 100 emails" from people all over the country and world saying they plan to participate, both solo and alongside a coven.

"What’s fascinating to me is that so many people who have never done anything like this are being drawn to do it," he said. "Like why not? Let’s try anything."

"I call Congress every day, I write letters, I’ve sent postcards, I’ve marched and everything. This is just one other prong in what we can do," he said.

"The real power that I see in this, and why I think so many people are embracing it, is because it’s a way of taking back your own power," he said. "So many of us just feel overwhelmed and beat down by the barrage of assaults on civil liberties, on immigrants, on the environment."
