  • Canadian electronic duo Purity Ring has released a new song called “Asido” today, on the five year anniversary of their debut LP Shrines. It premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 and comes with a lyric video that was written and directed by frontwoman Megan James. In a statement, James said of the track, “I imagine a tractor digging graves, I imagine crying blood, and I imagine eggs being swept away in it.” [ Pitchfork ]
  • Katie Crutchfield has shared a dreamy new video for the Waxahatchee song “Recite Remorse,” off of her recently-released album Out in the Storm. Directed by Ricardo Rivera, the clip features Crutchfield wandering through a sea of silky fabrics. Ricardo said of the video, “I am a video installation artist first and foremost, and this was the perfect opportunity for me to create an interpretive installation. I created an immersive space with layered translucent fabric and video projections and filmed Katie Crutchfield reacting to those elements. Optical layering of imagery onto the fabric and onto Katie created a video effect similar to many music videos of the ’90s, but done in practical way. Dreamy vibes for a dreamy song.” Waxahatchee is in Seattle tonight, playing at the Neptune Theatre. [ Consequence of Sound ]
  • English brother-band The Cribs have announced their new album 24-7 Rock Star Sh★t and shared the lead single “Rainbow Ridge.” The band says the new album is a “return to our roots and the raw approach we took on our first two records in 2004 and 2005.” Indeed, it has an early aughts lo-fi guitar-stomping sound. 24-7 Rock Star Sh★t was produced by Steve Albini and will be out August 11. [ Brooklyn Vegan ]
  • The latest marketing stunt in an endless parade of gags leading up to Arcade Fire‘s release of their upcoming album Everything Now is pretty clever. The band has created parody site of music column Stereogum called “Stereoyum” and has released a “Premature Premature Evaluation” of Everything Now, which they gave mixed reviews of. The gag was likely spurred by an article posted a few weeks ago on Stereogum called “Remember When Arcade Fire Were Good?” Make your own opinion about whether Arcade Fire is still good when they play the Key Arena on Sunday, October 15. [ SPIN ]
  • Synth-pop duo Sylvan Esso released their sophomore album What Now earlier this year and now they’ve decided to get together with their friends to reimagine the album. Back in April, they spent a day at Asheville’s Echo Mountain Studios with members of Wye Oak, the Mountain Goats, Hiss Golden Messenger, Mountain Man, and Megafaun to create a “visual EP” of songs off of What Now that they’re calling Echo Mountain Sessions. The first video of five to be released is “Rewind.” NPR will be sharing a new video from the project every day leading up to its release on July 28. Sylvan Esso will have a two-night stint at the Neptune Theatre on Friday, August 18 and Saturday, August 19. [ Stereogum]

In Stores Now 7/24

West coast rapper Tyler, The Creator shares his fourth LP, which boasts the FCC-unfriendly title Scum Fuck Flower Boy. (A representative for TTC says the “official title” is just Flower Boy.) The album features guest appearances by Frank Ocean, ASAP Rocky, Anna of the North, Lil Wayne, Jaden Smith, just to name a few. Now living in L.A., Animal Collective co-founder Avey Tare shares a new solo release. KEXP Music Director Don Yates calls is “a fairly diverse, somewhat uneven set ranging from catchy, rhythm-driven psych-pop to an abundance of meandering ambient-folk.” Toronto-based experimental rock band Holy Fuck share a new 4-song EP. In a press release, they state their goal was to “capture the raw energy of four people, not apart as bedroom producers, but together as a spirited exchange of ideas, a dynamic interaction that comes from years of friendship.”

The Ramones share the 40th anniversary deluxe edition of their sophomore 1977 album Leave Home. More details here on the KEXP Blog, but note, the on-air giveaway is over. It’s been eleven years since Welcome To Jamrock, but Damian Marley returns with a new LP. And Lana Del Rey shares her fifth full-length, which features guest appearances by The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, Stevie Nicks, Sean Lennon, and Playboi Carti.

Live Review: The Avalanches at Showbox at the Market 7/14

all photos by Dave Lichterman (view set)

It’s Friday night at the Showbox and there’s a singer on stage waltzing through “My Favorite Things” from The Sound Of Music and at the end of her final stanza, the band behind her crash in and a Danny Brown verse recited by Spank Rock (perhaps one of the only rappers who could conceivably match Brown’s penchant for debauchery). And then the band is covering The Clash’s “The Guns of Brixton”. And then they’re on the next track, vamping on the lyric “she wicked” for a good four minutes. And this just the first twenty minutes of what The Avalanches, the storied sample-jacking, song-smashing Aussie outfit, are as a live unit in 2017.

Forecastle Festival, Day 3: PJ Harvey, Weezer, Spoon, Adia Victoria, Conor Oberst, Foxygen, Charles Bradley

Charles Bradley // all photos by Morgen Schuler (view set)

Written by Morgen and Amie Schuler with help from Jane

While LCD Soundsystem on day two was something I looked forward to for weeks, day three of the festival was by far the most jam-packed with big names and I couldn’t wait to get started. The soul man himself, the Screaming Eagle of Soul better known as Charles Bradley commanded the stage. While he may be a few pounds lighter after fighting for his life over the last year, he didn’t show any signs of slowing down. Wearing a full jumpsuit, studded to the hilt, adding that extra flare he’s famous for, fans melted in his presence (and not from the heat like you might suspect); they just wanted to hear him sing and watch as he serenaded them with outstretched arms and work his magic. He really can bring a room to its knees with his charm.

Capitol Hill Block Party, Day 1: Wolf Parade, Austra

Austra // all photos by Morgen Schuler (view set)

Another year of Capitol Hill Block Party has arrived, bringing with it a sea of bro-tank tops, increased public intoxication, and a variety of local and national music acts. The music of Day 1 was quite good, with sets from Noname, Thundercat, and Katie Kate starting off the festival on an upbeat note. Wolf Parade and Austra remained highlights of the day, both drawing enthusiastic crowds and playing music from across their discographies.

Wolf Parade

Wolf Parade is an interesting pick to play Capitol Hill Block Party. Though they certainly have many upbeat, anthemic numbers, Wolf Parade’s music has always seemed rather hermetic, enjoyed by people too socially anxious to maneuver the squalor of Block Party. This presumption proved partially incorrect — plenty of die-hards were in attendance for Friday night’s set, and they were rewarded with a set list that drew heavily from 2005’s great Apologies to the Queen Mary LP. Both Spencer Krug and Dan Boeckner appeared in good moods, Krug sporting a quite nice haircut which makes him resemble a young Jean-Pierre Léaud (think Masculin Feminin, not Irma Vep). Read More »

The Music of Twin Peaks: The Return: Shawn Colvin, Angelo Badalamenti

[ SPOILERS AHEAD ]

David Lynch loves music the way Dougie Jones loves coffee, and it’s reflected in the soundtrack for Showtime’s Twin Peaks: The Return. Most of the episodes end with a band performing at the Bang Bang Bar aka The Roadhouse, the local bar in the city of Twin Peaks.

In an ongoing weekly series of exclusive interviews, KEXP’s resident Twin Peaks expert DJ Morgan will chat with the show’s music director Dean Hurley. Hurley has collaborated extensively with David Lynch on sound design and music, and since 2005, has operated Asymmetrical Studio, Lynch’s recording studio and film dubbing facility located in the Hollywood Hills. Tune in every Monday at 8:00 AM PT to The Morning Show on KEXP, as Morgan and John Richards air excerpts from her chats with Hurley. View previous chats in the series here on the KEXP Blog.

Episode 11 doesn’t feature a band in The Roadhouse, but there are two notable musical moments. One is the use of Elvis classic “Viva Las Vegas” as covered by singer/songwriter/Lilith Fair alum Shawn Colvin. The other is a piece of “Italian restaurant music” by Twin Peaks composer and longtime Lynch collaborator Angelo Badalamenti, appropriately titled “Heartbreaking.” In the clip below, Hurley reveals a few bands Lynch likes that might surprise you, and explains the eerie magic of how Badalamenti’s song fit into the scene.

Capitol Hill Block Party, Day 1: Run the Jewels

all photos by Morgen Schuler (view set)

“They’re a festival band”, a friend said. “That’s so true, they know exactly how to get a crowd going in less than a minute and keep ‘em going for nearly an hour; like one big party!” I said back. Though, what I really love about Run the Jewels is the ease with which one passes off the mic to the other. There’s no battle for who gets the spotlight more, they’re not worried about who is more of a frontman — they’re having pure, unadulterated fun at every step. It’s infectious and the audience at the Capitol Hill Block Party on Friday night could feel it the moment the first lyric is dropped.

It doesn’t hurt that they’re just that good, but that’s not the only reason. At a talk sponsored by KEXP earlier this year at the Upstream Music Fest + Summit, I heard president Portia Sabin of record label Kill Rock Stars talk about the two men working on this project. “They didn’t charge fans to download either of the first two albums [or their third, but fans can purchase the albums if they feel compelled]. They are already successful in their individual careers, and this is a project they just really wanted to do. Profit wasn’t as important.” That says it all and I can’t wait to see them again. SIFF Face the Music: Interview with Give Me Future Director, Austin Peters

Give Me Future

Here’s a piece of Capitol Hill Block Party trivia for you: Diplo is the only artist on the bill this weekend who has performed for 500,000 people at one time. At a free show in Havana, Cuba, in 2016, the first by an American artist since the US and Cuba re-established diplomatic relations in 2015, Diplo’s dance hall-EDM trio, Major Lazer, played to a crowd of nearly half a million. The crowd, hoisting Cuban flags and home-made posters, stretched back for miles. Kids danced and barricades rattled.

Director Austin Peters, whose work you may know from the music video for CHVRCHES‘ “Empty Threat,” was there to document the whole thing. The resulting film, Give Me Future, is just as much a celebration of global DIY youth culture as a colorful snapshot of this historic event. (Read our review of the film on the KEXP Blog here.)

Leading up to Diplo’s CHBP-headlining set on Sunday, we bring you an exclusive interview with Peters, who visited Seattle for Give Me Future‘s premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival earlier this year, about the monumental show in Havana, the on-the-fly approach that shaped the film, and a chance encounter with a Cuban skateboarder.

A lot of your work, and this film, in particular, focuses on youth subcultures. Were you a part of any scene growing up?

I never played sports and I never did anything like that, so I always really identified with music. When I was in high school,  my identity was about wanting to make music. I’m not really a musician, but I just thought being in a band was like the coolest thing in the world. Then, when I was in college, I started DJing. I sort of paid my way through school DJing at bars in New York City. I was never anything like Diplo. I just really liked the music. After I graduated, I kept doing it. I would DJ bars in New York at night and then, the next day, I would go shoot corporate videos for hospitals. Read More »
