Gamma Sense. Open, fast and free gamma radiation monitoring for citizens
We Make Money Not Art17 Jul 2017 | 7:31 amThe explosion of reactor number 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant on 26 April 1986 was the most terrible nuclear accident the world had ever known. Soviet authorities, however, stayed silent on the disaster. Two days later and over 1,000 km away, an employee at the Forsmark nuclear plant in Sweden detected unusually high radiation, forcing the Soviet government to publicly acknowledge the tragedy. Hopefully nothing remotely as catastrophic as the Chernobyl or the Fukushima disaster will ever happen again. However, if you live in the proximity of a nuclear power plant, you might want to… -

Portrait: Tomás Saraceno Wants to Fly While Keeping His Feet on the Ground
11 Jul 2017 | 6:48 amThis photo portrait was originally published as a longer interview feature onFreunde von Freunden. Art and science are often described as two opposing disciplines. Looking at the practice of the Argentinian artist and trained architect Toms Saraceno, such a differentiation is quickly disproved. Climbing one of his larger-than-life installations feels like becoming part of a scientific speculation about alternative habitats—one senses the often disregarded correlation of the human body and its environment in a new way. Be it his Cloud Cities, spectacular installations such as In Orbit and On Space Time Foam, or even his experiments around spiderwebs and aerosolar journeys, the common thread in Saraceno’s...

Photo by Istvan Virag Many of us, consciously or not, believe in human exceptionalism. We assume that the human species is not only ‘categorically or essentially different than all other animals’ but that it is also the most significant entity of the universe. Furthermore, at several moments throughout history, a group of people have declared another group of people to be nonhuman or subhuman and have used the argument to justify slavery, oppression and genocide. Examples abound. Think of how the Nazis defined Jews, Roma, Slavs and other non-Aryan “inferior people” as... -

The book features projects developed across the artist’s forty-five-year career that mediate the gap between fine and applied art using the mediums of architecture, sculpture, photography, painting, and drawing. Wexler’s works can be broadly described as tactile poetry composed by re-framing the ordinary. They sustain a narrative about landscape, nature, and...

Mind the Gap: Parallax Gap Now Open at the Renwick Gallery
29 Jun 2017 | 8:55 amParallax Gap is made of separate layers that were assembled in the Renwick's Bettie Rubenstein Grand Salon. Parallax Gap, an architecturally-inspired work on view at SAAM's Renwick Gallery, is suspended from the ceiling of the Bettie Rubenstein Grand Salon and runs the length of the room. Created in a series of layers, it depicts nine different ceilings of iconic American buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries—some contemporaneous with the design and construction of the Renwick, beginning in 1859. The installation plays with the ideas of depth and perspective, offering the viewer a multitude of vantage points to explore the work. It is based on the concept of parallax—how the distance or depth of... -
A Photographer and a Writer Walk into a Museum
22 Jun 2017 | 6:57 amFrederic Remington's Fired On The other day, in my quest to look at works of art with fresh eyes, I asked a colleague to join me (that's one way to get new eyes) in a walk through the museum, and let me know what spoke to him. I was interested in what Jeff, a photographer, would choose. After walking through a few galleries on the second floor, we turned a corner and he fixed on a painting of an evening scene that glowed uncannily green. "That looks like a photograph taken with a night vision lens," Jeff said, referring to a lens that intensifies the light and is often used by the military during night missions. We both stepped up to take a closer look at the painting, Fired On, an oil by Frederic...

GIF of the Day: Apple’s New Emojis Are Ridiculous
18 Jul 2017 | 3:32 pmApple is always looking to diversify their emoji collections. In the past few updates, we’ve seen new pictograms specifying everything from lesbian moms to personalized skin tones for emoticons. They ditched the gun emoji. And most usefully, added a taco. But this latest update seems to be taking things in a slightly more absurd direction? We can now send each other djinns, elves, a T-Rex, zombies, and somebody doing yoga. [Though, to be fair, I did find this GIF in an article with a more predictably-Apple headline: “Apple’s new emojis include a breastfeeding mother and a woman in hijab“.] But when will finally have a button for breastfeeding hijab-wearing same-sex-parenting dinosaurs with variable skin... -
In “The Wig Museum,” Jim Shaw Inaugurates An Institution For The End Of The World
18 Jul 2017 | 2:01 pmLOS ANGELES- Someone once described L.A. to me as feeling “less like a city, and more like post-apocalyptic suburbia.” Given the doom-and-gloom tenor of national political and global crises, it’s no surprise that this place has become such a topic of fascination for the art world. Below its veneer of conspicuous consumption, it’s a city known for cults, secret societies, and a near-Biblical litany of pending natural and climate-change-related disasters. Los Angeles is where the American Dream was symbolically forged, and unravels splendidly. I can’t think of a better artist to inaugurate an institution here—one housed in a trippy, abandoned 1960s Masonic lodge, no less—than longtime... -

How to Decide if a Class or Workshop is Right for You
6 Jul 2017 | 4:50 amWhenever a new class begins, I receive plenty of questions. Currently, I’m fielding questions about Creative Content Camp. The gist of the questions is: This class looks enticing, but is it right for me? Most often, my response isn’t a simple Yes or No, but a volley of questions in return intended to help the inquisitor come to a conclusion. Here’s what those questions look like. ©Peggy Crago, Bowl of Leaves. Wheel-thrown clay, slip-trailed, cut and finished with the majolica process, 5″ high by 14″ diameter. Used with permission. Why Hacking Social Media Isn’t The Answer (and Why I Won’t Teach It)
22 Jun 2017 | 4:25 amSocial media will not fix your broken marketing. There aren’t enough friends, likes or followers that can help you when you have a weak foundation. ©Cynthia Morris, Tasting Light. Watercolor and ink on paper. 7 x 5 inches. Used with permission. Plenty of online marketers will tell you how to hack social media, by which I mean they will teach shortcuts and tricks for “getting” followers and likes on social media. There’s nothing wrong with learning this information, but I won’t teach it because I find it terribly uninteresting and, ultimately, unhelpful to the longevity of artists’ careers. The online marketers do it well, so I leave the job to them. Out of Whack For most artists, hacking social... -
Advice for Those Who Want to Help the Artists in Their Lives
15 Jun 2017 | 4:17 amA nice man named Curt recently wrote me a heartfelt email. He had a strong desire to help his introverted, talented son with his art career. “I’m wondering if you would have advice for the non-artist helping the artist?” he asked. I started by acknowledging Curt’s love for his son. “Your son is very lucky,” I said. I added a few words of encouragement and, after much thinking, this is what I want to share with him and with all non-artists who want to help the artists in their lives. ©Krista Hasson, Contemplating. lazy YT-jaying: "Firecracker"
19 Jul 2017 | 12:55 pmDidn't realize "Firecracker," on the first Yellow Magic Orchestra LP, was a Martin Denny cover: [YouTube] According to Discogs, YMO started as a one-off concept project of Haruomi Hosono's, interpreting Western oriental exotica, which then caught on as a band. Riuichi Sakamoto and Yukohiro Takahashi originally came in as session musicians. The Denny piece anticipates David Byrne's Japanese-sounding themes for The Last Emperor, which Sakamoto also wrote music for, so there's some kind of cultural loop thing going on here. -
review by daniel albright (in and out of pull quotes)
19 Jul 2017 | 4:30 amI've been working on an informal bio of the late Daniel Albright, a college prof of mine and writer I subsequently became addicted to. I've found quite a bit of material online, including some feisty reviews he wrote for the New York Review of Books. The following post is a detour from the bio but it's a funny example of how publishers massage pull quotes. In 1983, Prof. Robert M. Adams, one of the founding editors of the Norton Anthology of Literature, produced a volume of English history meant to accompany and contextualize the anthology's writings, titled The Land and Literature of England. Albright, at that time teaching literature at the University of Virginia, wrote a rather scathing NYRB review... -
those clinton russia scandals
18 Jul 2017 | 4:56 amClinton supporters avoid focusing on the poor election performance of their candidate by keeping a steady stream of revelations about Trump and Russia coming every day. The Washington media seem to think it's 1972 and they are Woodward and Bernstein, breathlessly reporting new details. Meanwhile Trump goes about his business, packing the government with cronies and reversing socially useful regulations. The irony is the Clintons would be hip deep in Russia scandal if the same level of scrutiny were applied to them. James Howard Kunstler summarizes neatly: More interestingly, though, the meme that has led people to believe that any contact between Russians and Americans is ipso facto nefarious vectors into... -
egregious e-book errors: Routledge

(page 78 of the e-book) For a few seconds you could be forgiven for thinking there was a form of art-rock you missed called "rocfe." The word was supposed to be "rock." It appears again later in the book: "Along with the new paradigms for sexual behavior came an inordinate amount of discussion about sexism in rocfe music among the females who’d formerly been the objects of lust and/or veneration, love or repulsion, but really (as always) approach and avoidance among the men." The End Of Spain's Traditional 3-Hour Lunch Break?
19 Jul 2017 | 3:02 pm"This week, change could finally be on the way, as 110 professional bodies in Catalonia have signed up to a plan to change the region’s daily timetable by 2025, shortening the classic three-hour lunch break so that employees can finish work earlier in the evening. Such a change would radically reshape ordinary people’s lives—and controversially, it could drive a wedge between Catalonia and the rest of Spain." -

Does Tate Modern Provide A Model For A New London?
19 Jul 2017 | 1:02 pm"The museum may be the among the best-known examples of the now fashionable transformation of derelict factories into dynamic cultural space. Since its inception, the Tate Modern has never rested on its laurels, continuing to redefine itself as an institution of outreach, self-reflection and learning. The museum’s evolution over time provides a potential blueprint for how London, and indeed any city, can provide spaces that encourage its inhabitants to be collectively present. You cannot experience the Tate Modern through Facebook or a tweet; you must show up, with an open mind, surrounded by your fellow visitors."

To begin with, we notice that hundred, like dozen, thousand, million, and billion, is a noun rather than a numeral and requires an article (compare six people versus a hundred people); it also has a regular plural (a numeral, to have the plural form, has to be turned into a noun, or substantivized, as in twos and threes, at sixes and sevens, on all fours, and the like). Finally, it resembles and indeed is a compound (hund-red). Eleven and twelve are also compounds (see the previous post), but, to use a technical term, disguised ones, that is, we can hardly or not at all discern their ancient elements.... -
Does “buying local” help communities or conflict with basic economics?
19 Jul 2017 | 2:30 amAs summer approaches, picturesque roadside stands, farmer’s markets, and fields growing Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) dot the horizon from the Golden Gate to the Garden State. Consumers go to their local Farmer’s Market to keep spending local and to hopefully create jobs in the community. They “buy local” to reduce environmental impacts. Perhaps they believe that locally-produced goods simply taste better and have health benefits non-locally produced food lacks. Some believe interacting with neighbors builds trust within the community, while others believe local offers greater food security. But “buying local” conflicts with basic economic principles. Two hundred years ago David Ricardo... -
Embedded librarianship: the future of libraries
18 Jul 2017 | 5:30 amWith the rise of the internet and electronic research resources, it is not uncommon for a librarian to hear that libraries are no longer necessary. “You can find anything on the internet” is an often heard phrase. What most of those people do not realize is how integrated librarians (and information scientists) are in organizing and providing information to the public. Libraries must be able to offer resources across multiple formats, not solely through the internet and single books, but through models and creative and organizational programs as well. Librarians used to be seen as the gatekeepers of information, allowing access to the library’s resources, now the librarian’s role has pivoted to... -
Why can mailboxes only be used for U.S. mail?
18 Jul 2017 | 4:30 amBecause it is against Federal law to put anything in a mailbox, “on which no postage has been paid,” and if caught doing so a person could be fined up to $5,000 and an organization $10,000. Called the Mailbox Restriction Law, most countries do not have such legislation. But there is more. In the US, people receiving mail must pay for mailboxes, and these have to meet government specifications, or provide slots in their front doors through which postal carriers deliver mail. The Postal Service also “owns” our mailboxes and sets all the regulations involving them. Why? If you go to the USPS website, the answer you get is that mailboxes could get so full with other items and papers that there would be... -
Society is ready for a new kind of science—is academia?
18 Jul 2017 | 3:30 amIn her 1998 essay in Science, Jane Lubchenco called for a “Social Contract for Science,” one that would acknowledge the scale of environmental problems and have “scientists devote their energies and talents to the most pressing problems of the day.” We were entering a new millennium, and Lubchenco was worried that the scientific enterprise was unprepared to address challenges related to climate change, pollution, health, and technology. Twenty years later, our global challenges have only grown in complexity and urgency. Never before have we had such a clear understanding of our environmental crises and yet also been so far from delivering the investment in actionable research that Lubchenco called...

Artist Redd Walitzki’s Incredible “Stranger Than Earth” Art Show
14 Jul 2017 | 9:04 amOpening this July 15th, “Stranger Than Earth” is an ethereal upcoming solo exhibit by Seattle-based artist Redd Walitzki, at the Corey Helford Gallery, Los Angeles. The art show has been described as a requiem to our planet which has been irreversibly transformed by climate change. Walitzki’s laser-cut mixed media paintings that will be featured in the show are a stunning blend of high fashion and edgy science fiction. The artist actually travelled to incredibly awe-inspiring locations with some top models and photographers to shoot some spectacular images as the photo-references for these pieces. The emotional arc of this body of work also mirrors this transformation in a very personal way....

Eye Candy for Today: Colin Campbell Cooper’s Grand Central Station
19 Jul 2017 | 11:38 amGrand Central Station, Colin Campbell Cooper In the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC. Use the “Download” or “Enlarge” links under the image on their site. “Painterly” may be too mild a word for the wonderful assortment of scrapings, scumbling, smearing and loaded brush dabbing and scrubbing that make this smoky 1909 cityscape by American painter Colin Campbell Cooper such a visual treat. -
William Trost Richards small watercolors at PAFA
18 Jul 2017 | 8:18 amAmerican painter William Trost Richards, known for his seascapes and landscapes, was also a fantastic watercolorist. While traveling abroad in the late 19th century, he sent a series of small watercolors of his travels back to a patron, George Whitney, who was sponsoring his travels and looking to review scenes for possible larger commissions in oil. These “coupons”, as Richards called them, were somehow largely kept together after Whitney’s death, and in 2012 the collector in possession of them, Dorrance Hamilton, donated them to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. The watercolors were put on display in 2012 (my review here), but, like most works on paper, they are not ordinarily on view. There is... -

Eye Candy for Today: Rembrandt pen drawing of cottage and fence
14 Jul 2017 | 10:39 amCottage with White Paling among Trees, Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn Drawing in quill and reed pen in brown ink with brown wash and touches of opaque white and gray wash; roughly 7 x 10 inches (17 x 25 cm); in the collection of the Rijksmuseum. Image is zoomable on their page, you can also download it with the creation of a free “Rijksstudio” account. The Rijksmuseum describes the gray wash as being added later, along with the framing line. I suspect the opaque white may have been added by a later hand as well, all in an effort to make the drawing more of a salable piece somewhere along the way, but the nature of the original shines through. I just love Rembrandt’s landscape drawings, and my impression of... -

Daphne Cheng’s 8-in-1 Handbag

9 Jul 2017 | 6:54 pmHerzog & de Meuron with Ai Weiwei present Hansel and Gretel at Park Avenue Armory, NYCArchitects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron in collaboration with artist/activist Ai Weiwei have revealed a new interactive art installation titled, Hansel and Gretel. Taking place in the massive, dark and cavernous Drill Hall of the Park Avenue Armory in NYC, visitors are surrounded by a floating mass of surveillance drones that sense and capture their movements and project the image upon the floor and broadcasted it on the internet for anyone to see. The experience forces the privileged western citizenry of New York City to examine their expectations for privacy by forcing the confrontation with the... -

Miss Gardner’s House
13 Jul 2017 | 6:10 pmI took a day trip to Boston recently and if it turns out to be my only excursion out of New York this summer, that would be just fine. Because what a marvelous day it was! I rode the train up to Beantown for two reasons: to see my dear friend Bill MacDonald and to visit, finally, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, which was closed for renovations the last time I was in Boston a few years ago. The phrase “must see” might be overused at times, but in the case of the Gardner Museum it is truly appropriate. For art lovers of all stripes, the Gardner is absolutely a “must see”. What a great place! It is the embodiment of its founder – the flamboyant, eccentric art collector and philanthropist Isabella Stewart... -
Swan Song
30 Jun 2017 | 1:21 pmArtist’s models ply their trade in an assortment of venues, posing everywhere from prestigious fine art academies to grimy basement studios. We regard each of our venues in various ways based on our experiences: the one that pays us well, the one with clean fabrics and ample cushions, and the one that causes us aggravation, pretentious people here, nice, down-to-earth folks there. We feel appreciated at some, under-appreciated at others. Comes with the territory. The National Academy, for me, is the place where my full time art modeling career was launched eleven years ago. I had gone up there just a week earlier to get my name on file, fill out the necessary forms, and let them know I was ready to start... -

8 Jun 2017 | 8:45 pmHellooooo Museworthy friends! I hope this post finds you well. I’d like to pass along an article by Alina Cohen in Marie Claire in which some NY-based female art models were asked to discuss their careers and experiences in this unique profession of ours. I am one of them, and so is Cornelia Graham, who was the first model I ever met when I was starting out. During enjoyable chats over coffee in the Art Students League cafe, Connie offered me invaluable advice and friendship. I aspire to some good fun blogging this summer, specifically my own little art dabblings that I hope to create in my tiny, cluttered home studio. I’d love to share my work with all of you, and welcome your constructive feedback! Expect... -
Call to Sorrow
28 May 2017 | 11:28 pmWhen Army bugler Sergeant Keith Clark received the call that he was chosen to perform “Taps” at the funeral of President John F Kennedy it came as a bit of a surprise. He had assumed that a Navy bugler would do the honors, since President Kennedy was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, decorated with a Navy Marine Corps medal for his valor in the South Pacific when a collision with a Japanese destroyer tore his PT-109 in half. But Keith Clark, a patriot and an American in the throes of shock and grief along with the rest of the country, was truly the right man for the job. He had been playing and studying the trumpet since he was a child, receiving musical training during his youth in Michigan, through...

In Long Overdue but Welcome Step, Britain Will Eliminate Ads that Perpetuate Gender Stereotypes
19 Jul 2017 | 3:02 pmAdvertising is in the air (image by the author for Hyperallergic) This week, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in Great Britain released a report on gender stereotypes in ads titled “Depictions, Perceptions, and Harms.” As reported by the New York Times, the agency, which regulates advertising, found that stereotypes could “restrict the choices, aspirations and opportunities” of viewers — with particular concern regarding teenagers and young girls, as they develop their understanding of the world and their place in it. The report calls for the creation of new standards and practices to amend these biased and biasing advertisements. For the purpose of the report, gender stereotypes are... -
Maren Hassinger Restages Her 1982 “Pink Trash” Performance in Prospect Park
19 Jul 2017 | 2:15 pmMaren Hassinger, “Performance of Pink Trash” (1982) (performance documentation courtesy Horace Brockington) In 1982, Maren Hassinger collected bits of white trash that she found scattered in Central, Van Cortlandt, and Prospect Parks. What most would treat with disgust, Hassinger handled with care, painting each discarded tissue, cup, or cigarette butt baby pink. Clad in pink herself, she then returned to the three parks and returned the scraps to where she’d found them, transforming everyday litter into something almost whimsical. This performance, “Pink Trash,” originally commissioned by the organization Art Across the Park, is being restaged in Prospect Park this Sunday as part of the Brooklyn Museum’s... -
Algorithmic Art That You Can Blow On, Walk Through, or Dance Over
19 Jul 2017 | 10:00 amXYZT: Abstract Landscapes, installation view (all images courtesy ARTECHOUSE) Washington, DC — A few blocks south of the Mall, past the USDA building and on the way to the unfortunately named Mandarin Oriental luxury hotel, is DC’s newest art space. The brainchild of local art event curators Art Soiree’s Tatiana Pastukhova and Sandro Kereselidze, ARTECHOUSE (pronounced “art tech house”) describes itself as “an innovative digital art space dedicated to showcasing artists who are forerunners of the new renaissance in arts and technology.” Although this description sounds somewhat gimmicky and almost too trendy for its own good, ARTECHOUSE’s inaugural exhibition, XYZT: Abstract Landscapes, is... -
60 Performers Reclaim the Streets of Downtown LA
19 Jul 2017 | 9:23 amLola Gonzàlez, “Véridis quo” (2016) (courtesy of the artist) Our nation’s streets and those of countries around the world have been activated as sites of outrage in recent years, as citizens have gathered to protest new regimes, restricted freedoms, and the abuse of power by those in positions of authority. Inspired by these communal acts of resistance, French artist Lola Gonzàlez will stage a collaborative performance with choreographer Oguri and composer Paul Chavez against the backdrop of downtown Los Angeles as part of her residency at FLAX. Nari Ward Gets the G.O.A.T.
19 Jul 2017 | 8:57 amNari Ward, “Scapegoat” (2017) steel, wood, tire tread, concrete, fire hose, 40 x 12 x 12 feet I needed to look up the term “lawn ornament.” That is to say, the concept is somewhat foreign to me: the need to add decorative structures to enhance or beautify a natural setting. According to the Gardening Know How website, “Wisely placed lawn ornaments in the landscape can create a sense of elegance and warmth.” What this actually means is they exist to create a sense that the lawn, garden, or park is under conscious human management, that it is cultivated and controlled. We see mastery in the well-placed garden gnome that looks like an elf caught with his trousers down, peeing in a corner and looking over his...

Be Quiet
16 Jul 2017 | 6:21 pmdetail of sculpture, ceramic, wire, wood . I have been somehow drawn to a Native American woman selling jewelry on the plaza. She is perhaps in her 80’s, sits alone on a store’s stoop a full block away from the Palace of the Governors portal Under which sit close to 100 Indians who have driven from far-away teensy-tiny towns To participate in the daily lottery which decides who can stay to sell work. All others turn around and make the long trip home and try again another day. It is an extremely lucrative affair as there are many regulations ensuring buyers are purchasing authentic Native American work Not produced in China. The old woman sitting alone captivates me for a number of reasons; her... -
You Are Me
13 Jul 2017 | 5:06 pmmonoprint, 3022 . Suffering is the great equalizer. It really is a pisser But it truly is the thing that moves humans from “me” To “we”…. Back and forth- me, we, me, I see you, me, you are just like me, me, Oh yeah- I know that one too. I have seen that often the eyes continue to carry the gravitas of current, post or by-proxy suffering. I have it, Emma has it, the old man selling from his street cart has it. Trump doesn’t have it. He’s escaped so far. His eyes are dulled by confusion but that’s not the same. He is comfortable in his separateness and makes decisions from there. You can’t watch a movie or read about suffering and have your DNA really shift like the in-the-flesh kind tends to do. When... -
What’s Worth Fighting For?
10 Jul 2017 | 12:21 pm Rolling ’round recently I was feeling the effects of the heat and my fading chi. I entertain myself by asking revealing questions: “What, Cathy, is worth fighting for if your energy reserves are so low and you had to pick three things?” “Well…(I answer to my captivated self) …EMMAcomes to mind first off. ThenTHE QUALITY OF LIFE I ENJOY (creativity, security, peace, connection, beauty) And then there’d be myHEALTH..which allows my presence of mind..most valued of all.” It is pretty revealing and important to focus in on what we value And many ways to fight for the privilege and likelihood of their presence. Newly hatched Great Horned Owl chicks are now in the park I take EMMA to in the evenings. I like... -
Georgia and Me
5 Jul 2017 | 2:50 pminspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s “BLACK DOOR” series, ceramic, earth, bone, 30x30x4″ . I attended a lecture this morning hosted by THE GEORGIA O’KEEFFE MUSEUM by a woman who served Miss O’keeffe as librarian, housekeeper, companion and eventually caregiver as she became blind. To hear her tell it, O’Keeffe was quite the toughie; prone to acerbic delivery in conversation and the non-mincing of words. She was a challenging broad, shall we say. We most often hear of Georgia in her prime , modeling unfettered independence sans family and expected norms of behavior As she gifted the world with her way of seeing; lifting and shoving us all off the comfort of our familiar. During the lecture I became self-reflective... -
The Camo Men
3 Jul 2017 | 5:10 pmdetail of painting . Santa Fe celebrates July 4th by hosting a gargantuan pancake breakfast on the plaza put on by the city. Think doughy and haphazardly flipped disks on chalky paper plates. The din of human dining takes place amidst the trash of a throw-away culture. Watching the men set up for tomorrow’s event just really heavied-up my heart. I knew the busker who often sings so friggin’ badly in the early mornings will be displaced. I am challenged by his attempt at entertaining yet he pushes out these crude lyrics with his emphysemic throat, extremely tone deaf, day after day destroying my peace. Me, me me….. While the pseudo celebration of independence is marked in one way by incomprehensible...

Weird Things I Think About V1.0
29 Mar 2016 | 12:37 pm MANY moons ago my ex-husband and I saw a comedian who did a bit about what his kid was like first thing in the morning. His eyes would pop open, he’d fly out of bed with near manic energy dripping from every pore, his brain in high gear and a barrage of bizarre questions speeding through his brain and shooting out of his mouth. Questions like: “DO YOU THINK A SHARK EVER ATE AN ALLIGATOR?” (NOT A SHARK AND AN ALLIGATOR, BUT IT WAS TOO COOL NOT TO SHARE IT.) A perfectly legit question in my opinion, but my ex looked at me with a straight face and said: “OH MY GOD. THAT’S YOU. THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT YOU’RE LIKE IN THE MORNING. YOU ARE THIS GUY’S FIVE YEAR OLD... -
Dare To Live (It’s Not As Easy As We Think)
22 Mar 2016 | 11:53 am I am swimming in a sea of change right now. Lots of upheaval, lots of weirdness and lots of change. A time for decisions and movement is fast approaching and that movement has the potential to change the course of my life. What change doesn’t though? Deciding to get a cup of coffee can be a life changing experience. You could get in an accident on your way or you could meet your new best friend, husband or business partner while waiting in line. Anything and everything has the potential to change your life, but usually you can’t see it coming. This time I have the (mis?)fortune of seeing the change coming which creates an unusual opportunity (and somewhat stressful responsibility)... -
120 Minutes Tuesday
15 Mar 2016 | 12:24 pm I haven’t done a music post in ages and lately, for some reason, I keep thinking about 120 Minutes. For the uninitiated or who are too young to have been blessed with an MTV that actually showed music videos (sorry but MTV2 doesn’t count), the best of which was a weekly block of time that was dedicated solely to alternative music…back when alternative music wasn’t crap like Nickelback but encompassed a wide range of music for we the weirdos, oddballs, and outcasts. 120 Minutes embraced everything from Adam and The Ants and The Sugarcubes to Ministry, Jane’s Addiction and Sonic Youth. If it was outside the mainstream and kicked ass then it had a home on 120 Minutes. In honor of this...

HOW TO MAKE BETTER INFOGRAPHICS: TELL A SINGLE STORY
7 Jul 2017 | 8:26 amThis article originally appeared on Column Five. A lot of people want to know how to make infographics. We’ve made over 4,000 infographics for tons of companies over the last decade, so we know a thing or two about it. Most importantly, we know it’s not enough to make an infographic; you need to make a great infographic. But too often we see people sabotage their work. How? They try to do way too much, cramming as much as possible in. <ul> <li>More stats!</li> <li>Another CTA!</li> <li>Product mentions!</li> <li>Another 10 sources!</li> </ul> The instinct is understandable. You want to get the most bang for your buck. You want to give your reader as much info as possible. But this overlooks the actual purpose of an infographic: to tell a succinct... -
Who Is The Warren Buffett Of The Meme Economy?
5 Jul 2017 | 8:28 amThis article originally appeared on Priceonomics.. Memes have received a lot of attention following the surprising outcomes of elections across the globe in 2016—and the fiercely fought campaigns leading up to them. Sharing images and making cultural allusions were both common activities long before getting into heated political arguments with family members over the internet was. But making those allusions in white block lettering superimposed on familiar images—the humble image macro—has burst beyond a niche internet hobby and thrust memes of all sorts into popular consciousness. It’s only human, then, that someone would start a market to speculate on different memes’ futures. The traders of... -
HOW TO PICK THE BEST DATA VISUALIZATION FORMAT FOR YOUR STORY
4 Jul 2017 | 8:26 amThis article originally appeared on Column Five. If you want to tell a powerful story, data is the way to go. Whether it’s proprietary data, industry research, or public data, there are compelling stories all around. But even the best data story can lose impact if it isn’t presented the right way. That’s why it’s so important to choose the right data visualization format for your data. We find that there is a lot of misinformation or misunderstanding around this topic. Many people think that throwing a few charts and graphs into an article is all they need to tell a good data story. Or they think they can stuff a trillion data points into an infographic and call it a day. While the intention might... -
5 Simple Ways To Shape Your Content Through Your Culture
3 Jul 2017 | 8:13 amThis article originally appeared on Marketo. Many content marketers think they’re doing content right. They brainstorm. They monitor upcoming events. They plan their editorial calendar based on things like: <ul> <li>New product releases and updates</li> <li>Holidays</li> <li>Company news</li> <li>Current events</li> <li>Trends</li> <li>Conferences</li> </ul> They stick to their calendar and publish regularly. Yet their content fails. It’s not surprising. When you’re too focused on just filling the content pipeline, becoming a slave to your editorial calendar, it’s easy to lose sight of what you should be creating. What Is Good Content? Good, effective content connects. It speaks directly to your audience and provides something that they want or need. Yet so... -
8 THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN YOUR DATA VISUALIZATION AGENCY
30 Jun 2017 | 8:28 amThis article originally appeared on Column Five. Data visualization is an incredibly valuable tool for marketers. It helps you communicate important insights in a visual way, helping you deliver your message more impactfully. But not everyone does data design right—even if they say they do. A good data visualization agency knows data is about more than charts and graphs; it’s about bringing your data to life. HOW TO FIND A DATA VISUALIZATION AGENCY To make the hunt a little easier, here are 8 great questions to ask to help narrow down your search for the right data visualization agency. 1) DO THEY DEMONSTRATE THEIR DATA EXPERTISE? Many agencies can churn out an infographic, but a great data...

Desdemona ... and shifting from literal thinking to artistic thinking when painting
16 Jul 2017 | 12:25 pmDesdemona8 x 10 oil paintingby Pat Fiorello$300 Buy with PayPalThis spring I ordered a new type of rose from the David Austin catalog, called Desdemona. It arrived in March and my husband planted it. It's doing well here in the Atlanta weather, but I was surprised when the flowers came out that they were so tiny. See photo below withmy thumbnail for scale.I was envisioning some big, beautiful cup/bowl-like flowers so was a little disappointed at the actual size. I wanted to paint them, so figured I could just make them look the size I had imagined in the painting. When starting something that seems so complex, you really need to simplify to the major shapes and values. Furry Friends, a work in progress
19 Jul 2017 | 8:12 amWhen searching through my collection of images for the theme of Furry Friend this little black squirrel. I am enjoying this challenge of doing 30 watercolors in July for #WorldWatercolorMonth hosted by Doodlewash.com I have found that daily creativity is one of the best habits I can have. I start by blocking out 25 minutes for painting in the morning as a starting point. Many times it goes longer than that because it is going well and I am enjoying it. But, I seem to be more productive in other areas when after I have started with creating. I am also taking a course on creativity from Coursera. One of the things that jumped out at me is a quote. “To live is to have problems and to solve problems is to... -

Magical and Mystical
11 Jul 2017 | 5:39 amI have been playing around with taking some of faery images I have been making adding a motivational comments. Our thoughts work a powerful magic on us. When we focus on the negative and the unpleasant, they are what take on the most importance. The opposite is true. When you focus on the positive, it becomes the most important. This is matter of finding what you look for. It is why I have created my magical and mystical line. They are meant to be little bits of magic to make you smile in a world filled with conformity and mundane worries. -
Prima Patterns for #MicrobloggingMonday
10 Jul 2017 | 7:37 amThis post was originally shared on instagram. There is just something about vintage patterns that I love. I remember a dress from that time that had those same on the shoulder ties that I wanted so much. Now, I am glad that the pictures of me in the fashions of that time are few and far between. -
Sea Serpent for #MicroblogMondays
3 Jul 2017 | 5:38 amThis little fellow is what the work in progress from Wednesday turned out to be. This particular clay was softer and stickier than usual so this little guy is a bit rougher around the edges than I had hoped for, I learned a lot making him and hope to create more in the near future.

23 Artists Can’t be Wrong — Kudos for our 30th Anniversary Catalog
11 Jul 2017 | 1:47 pmOur 30th Anniversary Catalog Still Crazy After All These Years…30 years in art was our most ambitious by far. Our 46th catalog, is the largest (196 pages), with the most photographs (186), featuring the most artists (83) and the most artworks (111). So naturally, we are pretty pleased that clients and artists are excited about it, too. We’ve sold a record number of copies since the release a few weeks ago, and it isn’t even listed on Amazon yet. Many of the artists—23 in fact—have written us raving about the catalog.“ New Age Basket No.4 by John Garrett, collected and artist made parts; copper sheet and wire; found; paint; rivets, 16” x 15” x 15”, 2009 “Very handsome,” pronounced John... -
Textiles At Tate Modern in London
5 Jul 2017 | 12:29 pmThese are exciting days at the Tate Modern in London for fans of art textiles. You’ll find fiber works by important artists in several different galleries. Beyond Craft, in the Boiler House, curated by Ann Coxon features three pioneers, Lenore Tawney, Olga de Amaral and Sheila Hicks, who experimented with different weaving techniques, often looking to historical or indigenous textiles for inspiration. De Amaral and Hicks were particularly inspired by the technical brilliance of Peruvian weavings made before European colonization. The Museum notes that many artists in the 1960s were using weaving and knotting to create innovative hangings and sculptures, integrating traditional craft techniques into fine... -
ART ASSEMBLED FEATURED IN JUNE
30 Jun 2017 | 2:38 pmThe start to summer has been quite busy for browngrotta arts. Soon after came the launch of Cross Currents: Art Inspired by Water, an online companion exhibition to Plunge. Reaching Out by Karyl Sisson, vintage zipper tape and thread, 8″ x 56″ x 45″, 2013 Made with vintage zipper tape and thread, Karyl Sisson’s Reaching Out cloaks the floor in a deep red. First up, Interior Passages, Ferne Jacob’s remarkable wall sculpture of coiled and twined wax linen, a large and complex work that speaks against the desecration of women around the world. Interior Passages needs no one to tell her who she is or what she is says the artist. “She knows her value, and I expect the world to respect this inner understanding. When it doesn’t, I think it moves toward a destructiveness that can be devastating.” Helena Hernmarck in front of her tapestry Tabula...

Sleep Training (Or Not)
19 Jul 2017 | 1:00 amHow’s he sleeping? asks Bee’s Chinese teacher. Good sleeper? the barista smiles. Are you guys getting any sleep? prods my mother-in-law. My answer is always the same: Well… — Scout is not, by definition, a good sleeper. He’s prone to waking up often in search of his pacifier, in search of comfort, in search of us. We offer him each at his near-every whim, fully aware that this is the precise opposite of every sleep trainer’s advice. But for us, for now, our focus lies instead on creating a solid, trusting bond that extends far into every corner of every hour. (Even the languishing 3am ones.) This is new to me, the bucking-of-the-system. It’s going rogue, the decision to ignore the popular advice, the social... -
Of Paperweights and Privilege
13 Jul 2017 | 3:53 amOur conversation has taken a sharp turn to privilege. She is quoting Eleanor Roosevelt to me – I am familiar, I say – and she is twirling her locks in one hand, cupping an Americano in the other. She tells me that her daughter has gone off to college. A small liberal arts school out East, she says, and she’s come back just completely bonkers. Her daughter speaks of privilege now, of how she has it and others don’t and she feels a bit of shame in that, and the people she splits the Ramen bill with are opening her eyes to so many injustices and Mom, don’t you get it? And her mother, sitting at the gingham-covered table with me today, says this: Doesn’t she know how hard her father and I worked for what she’s... -
A Favor
12 Jul 2017 | 5:57 amDear friends: If you’ve visited this space before, you’ll know I’m in Year 12 of professional blogging. A decade of hitting publish, hovering over delete, googling the correct usage of “past” and “passed” (still can’t nail it). Twelve years. This makes me an Internet teenager, and can I be frank here? I’m feeling it. I’ve changed a lot since cute shoes and HGTV bloopers. There are days in which I feel the electric spark of inspiration, in which I can’t wait to share with you a slew of recent discoveries – the hard-fought lessons, the swirling thoughts, the perfect nontoxic mascara (found). There are mornings I wake up and bound to the laptop that awaits on my dining room table, pinching myself that I get to... -
Simmer Down
7 Jul 2017 | 3:05 amI’m a sauce girl, through and through. Take me to a fancy restaurant and I’m oft-tempted to order the kids’ chicken fingers as a means of tasting every condiment imaginable. Chipotle mayo? Extra, please. Your pumpkin ketchup? Yes a million. Aioli anything? 100%. Thus, marinades. I don’t use marinades as marinades in that I don’t offer my kitchen much in the way of brain cells. There’s no pre-planning, pre-simmering, pre-soaking. It is, simply: heat the pot, drop the meat, pour the sauce. If you’re a fellow flavor fan (alliteration, Amen!), here are a few favorites in my own pantry, most of which can be found at Amazon or Thrive Market: <ol> <li>Tessemae’s Mild Buffalo Sauce Truthfully, I have a friend who gifts me...</li></ol> -
Corralling the Crafts
5 Jul 2017 | 4:13 amBee is both collector and crafter, wildly imaginative and unsurprisingly resourceful (sounds not at all familiar). Her desk lives in Ken’s office, and often, the pair can be found whiling away the afternoon in tandem, fully immersed in their own respective projects. In Bee’s world, Q-tips become fishing rods. Pom-poms become hedgehogs. To say nothing of the popsicle sticks between the couch cushions. The next morning, and the morning after, the mess lingers (I’m still in the middle of it, she says), until I declare the project finished or paused and the mess moves into the (over-flowing) credenza. Where then? Where to? Here are a few systems I love: <ol> <li>Archive It This is my personal favorite and the one we...</li></ol>

REVIEW: SISTERS ~ DRINK CHAMPAGNE
22 Jun 2017 | 10:55 amDrink Champagne by SISTERS SISTERS ~ DRINK CHAMPAGNE A REVIEW Ladies and gentlemen I have been to the future of music and it is bright, it is beautiful, it lacks easy classification, and it hits you like an explosion of color and sound waves. This future tears the music of the past from limb to limb and reorganizes it into something so fresh it’s almost under-ripe. I have been to this future and I’ve seen it with my own eyes and heard it with my ears and that future is Sisters. It’s one thing to hear Sisters, the duo of Andrew Vait and Emily Westman which sounds like it was borrowed from Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, tUnE-yArDs, and Wye Oak, but there’s also a visual element to the music. To see them up on... -
REVIEW: CHASTITY BELT ~ I USED TO SPEND SO MUCH TIME ALONE
2 Jun 2017 | 10:22 amI Used to Spend So Much Time Alone by Chastity Belt CHASTITY BELT ~I USED TO SPEND SO MUCH TIME ALONE~ A REVIEW Of all the bands I’ve covered and reviewed over the years I can’t remember ever having my perception of a one do as full a 180º as I have with Chastity Belt. I’ve always thought that the band was one of the great Seattle acts but initially I didn’t take them too serious and I’m not sure how serious they took themselves then either. Even before the release of their debut album No Regerts, their self-deprecating humor and eye roll lyrics felt funny, fun, and at times crass. Their motto was “Fuck Chasity Belt,” and they once described themselves as “the worst music you will ever hear,” not everyone... -
REVIEW: GENERIFUS ~ PEACE SIGN RISING
19 Apr 2017 | 11:39 pmPeace Sign Rising by generifus GENERIFUS ~PEACE SIGN RISING~ A REVIEW If I was really honest I would have to admit that for me I always start at Rock and Roll, that is what I want to hear, that is what I’m looking for, I rely on other artists who start from that rock position to shift my interest. I’ve never been much for honky tonk or the country sound and the artists from the 70’s who ventured into that twangy, pedal steel stuff was never really my favorite, but over the last few years I’ve found a number of artists who played with that style enough to perk my ears up, Father John Misty’s debut Fear Fun, Karl Blau’s 2016 album Introducing Karl Blau, and pretty much everything by Jonathan Wilson. Everyone... -
REVIEW: LAKE ~ FOREVER OR NEVER
5 Apr 2017 | 12:17 pmLAKE ~FOREVER OR NEVER~ A REVIEW Any attempt for me to be objective in my opinions about his album are truly futile, because for me LAKE is that band that you’re with until the bitter end, for better or worse, Forever or Never. There would be no Secretly-Important had it not been for a chance discovery in the depths of itunes eight years ago, up to a point everything I did with this site was simply in effort to get to know this band. I’ve stood next to countless fans at countless shows who are unapologetic fans of a particular band, fans to an insufferable degree, fans of each and every song from the first note to the final waining last, and for me that band is LAKE. So was it chance that I discovered LAKE... -
REVIEW: EASTERN SOUVENIRS ~ GREEN VALLEYS
30 Mar 2017 | 9:46 amGreen Valleys by Eastern Souvenirs EASTERN SOUVENIRS GREEN VALLEYS A REVIEW When I first reviewed Brian Fisher’s Eastern Souvenirs EP what I really loved was the organic digital trickery of the album, it had a charming plinky-plunky, clinky-clunky sound to it, aided by the band’s namesake, the souvenir instruments from various countries acquired by Brian Fisher. If that initial EP was missing anything it was the absence of a real heavy punch like other electronic based acts such as Erik Blood or Crater. For Green Valleys Fisher has released ten absolutely punchy songs that adhere to that dance of electronic sounds and organic instruments commingling and intertwining but these songs seem to rumble from...

Net Neutrality and the “Day of Action”
11 Jul 2017 | 2:18 pmBy Miles Freeman, Development Associate at Fractured AtlasTomorrow, July 12, 2017, Fractured Atlas will be among the numerous websites, internet users, and online communities coming together to sound the alarm about the future of net neutrality, and the internet itself, as part of the Battle for the Net’s “Day of Action”.Fractured Atlas believes that net neutrality — the principle that internet service providers (ISPs) should not be able to slow down/block any websites or apps, charge apps and websites extra fees to reach audiences, or prioritize some content over others—is vital to cultural and technological innovation, and should be strongly enforced. Without strong net neutrality rules, we... -

There was a huge amount of unfinished artwork that I thought I will get back to someday, but this rarely happens, so I deleted most of it. I also implemented a new directory structure for storing my finished artwork as the old one was getting impractical. 25 Jun 2017 | 7:35 amHere is some interesting information about this space landscape for the technically inclined: the high resolution image consists of 27.388.800 pixels and 1.895.034 unique colors; the uncompressed bitmap file is 82MB; maximally compressed PNG file is 42Mb; there are 44.040.192 polygons in the landscape and two procedural textures; rendering at 6340 x 4320 took 30 minutes and 11 seconds on a dual core Intel I3-2330M 2.2GHz CPU... -
Explorers
15 Jun 2017 | 6:36 amAlien ships explore the surface of a newly discovered planet by slowly flying above a desert landscape with patches of growing crystals... I recently read some quotes by Isaac Asimov and here are two that I especially like: "Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinder critics and philosophers of today - but the core of science fiction, its essence has become crucial to our salvation if we are to be saved at all." And the second quote: "In life, unlike chess, the game continues after checkmate." -
Starry evening space art
6 Jun 2017 | 9:40 amToday I came across two interesting quotes by Carl Sagan that describe the size of the universe: For as long as there been humans we have searched for our place in the cosmos. Where are we? Who are we? We find that we live on an insignificant planet of a hum-drum star lost in a galaxy tucked away in some forgotten corner of a universe in which there are far more galaxies than people. And the second quote: The size and age of the Cosmos are beyond ordinary human understanding. -

A Crop of Recordings XVI: Elgar, The Dream of Gerontius and the First and Second Symphonies played by the Berliner Staatskapelle under Daniel Barenboim
17 Jul 2017 | 10:41 pmIf Gerontius died today, it would probably be at a hospital with no Cardinal Newman to record his passing and no Sir Edward Elgar to create his beautiful dream of a masterpiece. And, one supposes too, there’d be no Daniel Barenboim to bring the work to Germany so powerfully as he does here, details and quibbles to follow. We don’t immortalize last words and thoughts the way we used to. The post A Crop of Recordings XVI: Elgar, The Dream of... Here is the latest on the Berkshire Review for the Arts. A Summer Home for Schubert at Ozawa Hall, Tanglewood I, hosted by Emanuel Ax
15 Jul 2017 | 4:30 amEmanuel Ax, “curator” of the eight Schubert concerts that will span the Tanglewood summer, put himself in the role of a genial and supportive host for the first offering of the series. The performance felt like a gathering of an extremely talented group of family and party guests on the stage of Ozawa Hall. His own contributions before intermission were to provide modest backgrounds for works that featured singers and instrumentalists, those... Here is the latest on the Berkshire Review for the Arts. A Singer’s Notes 134: BEMF intertwines two Pergolesi farces and sublime singing from Dominique Labelle at Aston Magna.
15 Jul 2017 | 3:58 amThis performance was a frolic. It displayed a combination of two quite different buffo operas, and yes, it worked. Pergolesi's La Serva Padrona and Livietta e Tracollo combined, found a zany success. I had my doubts at first, but was laughing my head off soon enough. The better-known of the two, La Serva Padrona, revolves around the character Uberto, a pomposo, energetically sung by Douglas Williams. Sad Tracollo was sung winningly by Jesse... A Room with Two Views: Campra and Handel at the Boston Early Music Festival
12 Jul 2017 | 12:13 amTwo large-scale vocal works were presented at BEMF on successive nights (Wednesday and Thursday, June 14 and 15), one a work of music theater, merging opera and ballet; the other devotional but in the musical language of opera absent the staging. Composed within nine years of each other, they offer contrasting perspectives of Italian music and culture from the points of view of a French and a German composer. Both were clearly besotted with... Here is the latest on the Berkshire Review for the Arts. Click on the headings to visit the site and read the full articles. -
Allyn Burrows, Shakespeare and Company’s New Artistic Director, talks to Michael Miller about the 2017 season…and much else.
23 Jun 2017 | 9:51 amShakespeare and Company, a presence in Lenox since its foundation in 1978 by Tina Packer and Kristen Linklater, has undergone some seismic challenges in recent years, and there has at times been some concern about its future, but it continues to soldier on with its richly and solidly matured education programs and performances that seem to only to get better and better. Now, following a brilliant season (2016) and looking forward to what... Here is the latest on the Berkshire Review for the Arts. Click on the headings to visit the site and read the full articles.

11 Jul 2017 | 11:48 pmTwo large-scale vocal works were presented at BEMF on successive nights (Wednesday and Thursday, June 14 and 15), one a work of music theater, merging opera and ballet; the other devotional but in the musical language of opera absent the staging. Composed within nine years of each other, they offer contrasting perspectives of Italian music and culture from the points of view of a French and a German composer. Both were clearly besotted with Italy, one responding to the carnival spirit of Venice with its light-hearted approach to life, love, and entertainment; and the other situated at the center of the sober religious and devotional culture of Rome. Experiencing these two works back-to-back and interpreted... -
The Best Show in Town! Spoon River, from Soulpepper of Toronto
11 Jul 2017 | 10:43 pmAt some point, as I savored my memories of Soulpepper's musical, Spoon River, I succumbed to the temptation to give this review the title you see above. As I began to put words together on my screen, I thought with regret of TFANA's close-to-perfect Measure for Measure over in Brooklyn. But somehow this banal phrase, which does Soulpepper's brilliant creation sincere but unworthy honor, jumped out of its hole, and I can't chase it away. I hope I can do Soulpepper true justice below. MOMIX dance Opus Cactus and more at the Joyce.
8 Jul 2017 | 7:35 amThe desert blooms in wondrous ways with all manner of flora and fauna in Momix’ Opus Cactus, conceived by Moses Pendleton. The company members, self-described as “illusionists” are as athletic as Olympians. During the performance they appear as giant saguaros, tumbleweeds, fire dancers and a four-person, slithering Gila monster, with all these figures emerging from an ingenious use of costumes, lighting, and the human body. Mostly it’s about the suppleness of the dancers (though some argue that this isn’t exactly dance) and their staggering physicality. Very creative costumes and lighting also contribute. Amy E. Gustafson, an Important New Pianist, at Florence Gould Hall, Playing an Exceptional 9-foot Yamaha
7 Jul 2017 | 12:04 pmOne of the gratifying trends in recent piano recitals has been the interest in Debussy's most ambitious piano compositions, above all Book II of his Préludes. In the past few years I've reviewed penetrating, deeply considered realizations of these subtle and complex sound-poems by Ian Hobson and Stephen Porter, which were among the most significant piano recitals I heard at the time. Marc-André Hamelin also included a characteristically brilliant and subtlety tinted and shaded reading of Images, Book I. It was a rich season for Debussy. The post Amy E. Traveling is expensive? Let's talk about that
22 Jun 2017 | 3:22 amAfter a very long break from my blog , I would like to adress an isue that has probably been talked about by lots of people. If you are a member of some sort of Nomads groups on Facebook, then you can see how every day someone posts his or her travel plan (by foot, bike etc) and you might be thinking one or all the following :How does she have that much time? I work like crazy and maybe even have children whom I have to take care of.Where on earth did he get the money from? I'm still struggling to survive and pay the rent. How much money does one need to travel for months? They're like in their 20s, they couldn't have saved so much money.I want to do that. Ok,maybe not hitchhiking because of all the creeps... -

5 Dec 2014 | 9:12 am9th of November, around noon, a bus going to Bucharest Otopeni Airport. There were hardly any people in the bus and the weather was foggy and somewhat depressing. The sound of whatever Romanian radio station was blasting through my headphones,as I was sitting with the small backpack between my legs.I was excited to be here. Not necessarily in the bus,but on the way to the airport,to my plane who will ultimately take me to Germany.Ok,not Germany, but Switzerland. But I would get to Germany the same day. My phone starts ringing.I look at the name on the screen ."Mum Home".Great,I haven't even left the country yet and my mother is calling to convince me of something. How to be untrustworthy
10 Jul 2017 | 1:19 pmOver the past seven years, I’ve built a few platforms that get a decent amount of traffic. For the past three years, I’ve been trying to convert some of that traffic into revenue through digital products and courses, so I can focus more time on my writing. Although I have had some success, I’m also sure things aren’t going as well as they could be going. Recently I had my sites audited (got feedback from experts and users) to find out how to improve. The issue that came up repeatedly, is that my visible and obvious lack of confidence made me appear untrustworthy. This is more complex than it sounds, so I’m going to examine two industries that are on my mind today before taking a look at how it relates to my... -
Join me on Spanish island? (Writing retreat in Mallorca)
10 Jul 2017 | 12:15 pmWe’ve spent several months in the USA this year, and I’m already itching to get back to Europe. The slow pace, the clean air, the historic buildings… I just always feel more creatively inspired if my surroundings are uplifting. Our current plan is Portugal in September, Prague or Frankfurt in October, a castle in Austria for November, then hopefully Malta – the magical island I spent years getting my degree in art history and philosophy. I haven’t been back for 16 years and I can’t wait to return. Then if we can work out the visa details and stay in Europe long enough, I’ll be speaking at the “20booksto50K” conference in London in early February, before heading back to Taiwan for Chinese New Year. But wait!... -
Can a good press release really help you sell a TON of books?
5 Jul 2017 | 10:31 pmA few years ago I wrote a post about how authors can use press releases to actually sell books. But the main takeaway was that authors shouldn’t try and do a press release because most of the time, they haven’t actually done anything newsworthy. I’ve somewhat modified my position, because: <ol> <li>doing a press release might get lots of good backlinks and some extra visibility</li> <li>it’s not too difficult and probably doesn’t have a downside</li> </ol> That said it’s not actually going to do much for you; it definitely won’t sell a ton of books. UNLESS you do something newsworthy. Once you’ve done something interesting, a press release can be a great move to take your writing career to the next level. So here’s an... -
Advanced Amazon advertising for Authors
8 Jun 2017 | 3:52 amI was pretty sure Isucked at Amazon ads. Which is mostly fine: I’m still making money and I figured I couldn’t *really* spend big on Amazon ads until I had a bunch of finished series out. Tonight I took a look at the ads I’m still running. My average cost per click is about $0.30; and my averageAdvertising Cost of Sales (ACoS) is about 500%. Which means, basically, that I spend $5 to make $1 (not exactly though, because getting more visibility also gets more borrows and page reads. The nice thing about advertising is that I can keep a better rank with a higher price – so I changed Shearwater to $3.99. In the last month, I spent $400 on ads, and made $1200. My first reaction is to think, damn that’s not... -
How I used giveaways to run the greatest book launch of all time (1000+ reviews, 100K downloads, starting from zero platform).
30 May 2017 | 1:06 amFull disclosure:I wrote the title of this post in 2015, before I’d actually published any fiction, so 1000 reviews and 100K downloads was my intended outcome, the biggest goal I could dream off. That said, a year and a half later, I’ve gotten far more than 100K downloads (194179, to be exact) and do have over 1000 reviews – but they’re split among several books, a few hundred reviews on each. So on the one hand, I wasn’t quite as successful as I intended to be. That said, in the last year and a half I’ve made about $40,000 from Kindle and $34K of that was in the last 5 months. I’ll admit, it wasn’t as easy as I estimated. But also, I’m not actually promoting very hard. I had a book launch last month. This...

Tom Iland talks about his new book Come to Life about empowering those on the autism spectrum
18 Jul 2017 | 6:38 am“Empowering your young person is the key to giving them the skills they need to live an independent life. If you do things for them that they could learn or even do for themselves by themselves, then you are DISEMPOWERING your young person,” Tom Iland By Debra Muzikar What is your first book Come to Life about? My very first book, Come to Life! Your Guide to Self-Discovery, takes readers through my mantra…Know Yourself. Love Yourself. Be Yourself. In the book’s six chapters, I explain the importance of knowing that you have a disability or learning difference and how it affects you both positively and constructively. I then assure readers that even though you may have a disability or learning difference... -
What really matters: Let’s focus what we in the autism community can agree on
16 Jul 2017 | 7:39 am“We have spent so much time arguing about this and that that we can’t agree on anything. And agreement is the only way to make change.” By Carly Fulgham In February I wrote a blog about the words that matter. Frustrated at all the time I saw being spent around words that don’t really matter in the big scheme of things. I think it’s important to respect people’s wishes on what to be called if it’s known, but whether we’re called autistic or people with autism won’t improve service availability or affordability. Won’t get us into independent housing; won’t get us jobs. Today I realized it’s even bigger than that, while watching John Elder Robison give the closing keynote speech at the Autism Society National... -
How a Ten Year-Old Autistic Boy Uses Slow-Motion Video To Explain His World
12 Jul 2017 | 7:45 am“…while it might seem that my son is in his own world, he is actually in two worlds, theirs and his, aware, conscious, and observant of both simultaneously.” by Erik Raschke and K. Kristiaan (instagram.com/K.Kristiaan) My ten year-old son cannot read, nor write, nor count higher than five. But what I have always understood and what has become apparent through my son’s photography, is that he is not only aware, but constantly absorbing the world around him and that his expressive strength comes not from words or drawings, but from taking photos or video and playing it back later, studying it endlessly. While walking the dog or returning from the grocery store, he might be stumbling along, twenty feet... -

Honey and Fresh Fig Smoothie
18 Jul 2017 | 4:00 amIt’s smoothie time here on the eastern shore and fresh figs are coming into season. Raise your hand if you love figs. Figs are my very favorite fruit. My husband and I planted a fig tree here on Chesterhaven Beach Farm about five years ago from a graft that my friend Joyce took from one of her most prolific fig trees. Today our tree stands taller than I and it’s a pleasure to witness nature at her finest. Interesting factoid. Honeybees do not pollinate figs. Wasps do. And the story is fascinating. We have good years for figs and not-so-great years for figs on the eastern shore. If we have a brutal winter, the fig tree usually doesn’t give much fruit the following summer. As you would expect, if we are... -

Honey Blueberry Ice Cream
16 Jul 2017 | 3:45 amWe’ve created this blueberry ice cream in honor of a national holiday. Did you know that today is National Ice Cream Day? How good does blueberry ice cream sound? Pretty good, we think-and it only gets better if you add some honey and a little chocolate! Using the bountiful crop of blueberries that are now in season, we’ve come up with this Blueberry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream recipe. Made fresh with local berries and Eastern Shore Honey, it’s a great way to celebrate summer. This treat will take at least six hours from start to finish, only because it requires time in the ice cream maker and then time in the freezer to set. If you don’t have an ice cream maker, you can blend all the ingredients together... -
Bee Inspired Summer Grilling Roundup
14 Jul 2017 | 3:45 amSummertime is nice and hot-but your kitchen doesn’t have to be! With these summer grilling recipes, you can avoid heating up your home and cook in the open air instead. Foods made on the grill can be lower in calories than those cooked on a stovetop, and have a delicious smokiness that your traditional range won’t provide. Using our Eastern Shore Honey on the grill gives your food a mellow sweetness that enhances savory meats and vegetables. When grilling, it’s important to note that gas is healthier option than charcoal. Charcoal grills release more carbon than gas, and they can (potentially) add some chemical compounds to your food, if overly “charred”. Although you would have to consume a lot of...

polly collage & pattern | new work
19 Jul 2017 | 7:00 ami shared this collage a while ago on instagram, and kept forgetting to share it here too. it was one of those that came together really quickly and naturally. which are my favourite kind of collage to make to be honest. i rely on instinct a lot, so when it just tells me what to do without really conciously doing so, it’s always a good thing in my eyes. as always, couldn’t resist making a pattern either. i thought her little …head posy looked cute as a floral pattern. it kind of reminds me of a grandmas curtains? in a good way. polly pattern products on redbubble: duvet cover, contrast tank, pouch, and scarf polly collage products on society6: wall tapestry, iphone case, bath mat, notebook,... -
make your own custom washi tape
17 Jul 2017 | 12:00 amone of my dreams for quite some time has been to have some custom washi tape made with one (or more) of my designs on. washi tape has been a big thing in the UK now (originating in japan) and pretty much since it became a thing here it’s been something i’ve wanted to do. so, when wovenlabel contacted me to do just this you can bet i was excited! i had recently made my bisect collages and knew those scissors would be just perfect on something like this! the process is easy, just choose your required width and amount of rolls, then you upload your design – they provide a template for your required width. this bit was super quick and easy, and providing your design is quite simple, it shouldn’t take too... -

7 Jul 2017 | 5:00 ammy fatigue this week has been ridiculously bad. sometimes i’ll have a short period where i’ll have a little burst of energy, but then i feel even more tired than before. no matter how much i rest physically (and try to, mentally) it doesn’t seem to help and over the week my body has gotten more and more lifeless. there’s been a few times where it physically hurts to even move my fingers let alone do any basic things. even just sitting up and typing this is tiring me out. early on in the week, when i still had a semi normal amount of energy, i went to roath park to walk around and take photos. so ..that’s what i’m sharing here today. hope you all have an enjoyable (and more energy filled than me)... -
taking time out from your day
3 Jul 2017 | 12:00 amnow more than ever i feel the need to be more mindful about relaxation and taking time to get away from things. this year has been a real test and to be fair, as strong as i might think i am, i am falling apart. so, small rituals to keep my mind together are a very helpful practice. in that vein, i thought i’d write about some things i do to relax and take time ‘off’, whether that be for a few minutes or over a longer time. tea one simple thing, is, as i’ve mentioned before, tea. making it, drinking it and taking time to just ‘be’ for a bit. chamomile tea is particularly good for this. it’s a good one to drink in the evening to ease you into the right state of mind for sleeping and restfulness. if you’re...

Veteran Workshop with Lebo
19 Jul 2017 | 8:00 amNot only does David “Lebo” Le Batard create art for his collector’s enjoyment, but also as a means to passionately help others. One of the Miami artist’s most recent charitable endeavors was a free art workshop for military veterans on June 26. Through ArtServe, a coalition that works to help artists become involved with communities of underserved people and at-risk youth, a group of veterans met and worked on individual paintings with the iconic founder of Postmodern Cartoon Expressionist to learn a new skill and relieve stress caused by PTSD. “Veterans, for me, are one of the most underserved citizens that we have,” Lebo said. “If we can use my work—in whatever capacity—to help whatever... -
Video Premiere: Tim Yanke Captures the Spirit of the Southwest
18 Jul 2017 | 8:00 amArtist Tim Yanke still recalls the wonder he felt when traveling through Southwest America for the first time. “There was just something about the place,” Yanke says. “It was just magical, and I incorporate that into the paintings.” Park West Gallery captures Yanke in his element in its newest video by giving viewers an in-depth look at the magnificent sites and sounds that inspire Yanke’s Neo-West art. The scenic video explores the sprawling western landscape and its vivid colors as Yanke paints them onto his canvas. A drone flies past Yanke as he draws inspiration from the southwestern landscape. Yanke’s signature Neo-West style is a blend of Abstract Expressionism, personal experiences, and... -

Behind the Artist: Rembrandt van Rijn
14 Jul 2017 | 1:54 pmNearly 400 years ago, Dutch visionary Rembrandt van Rijn famously wrote: “Choose only one master—nature.” True to his muse, Rembrandt’s magnitude continues to puzzle those in its presence. There are arguably few other artists who embody a talent so vast and incomprehensible, earthly, yet simultaneously immortal. As a tribute to his significance, the notable Spanish court painter Francisco Goya would later revise Rembrandt’s statement to say: “I have had three masters—nature, [Diego] Velázquez, and Rembrandt.” “Self-Portrait” (1660), Rembrandt van Rijn. Fruitcake, Anyone?: Searching For The Zone In Twin Peaks: The Return ‘Part 9’
16 Jul 2017 | 9:33 amDamned good coffee! You know that zebra’s out again, dearest Filthy Dreams readers? Wait…what? Oh yes, that mixed feeling of confusion, horror and fascination must mean it’s time for part two of our Lost In The Bang Bang Bar double-header this week with a look at Twin Peaks: The Return Part 9. So scratch at your rash, muss up your hair and, by the way, have you seen that penguin? “Memory is really a magical thing,” enthusiastically and characteristically bizarrely explains David Lynch in an interview with AnOther Magazine, “They say that memory in Vedic language is smriti. And in the transcendent, in the unified field, there is the memory of everything that has ever been, the memory of... -
Let’s Get Off This Highway: Exploding The Sublime In Twin Peaks: The Return ‘Part 8’
14 Jul 2017 | 8:10 amMy praaaaaayer! Gotta light? Gotta light? Gotta light?….What’s that? Oh! Hello, dearest Filthy Dreams readers! And welcome back to our ongoing obsession with Twin Peaks: The Return. As you know, I was off in disco-land for the past couple weeks and so wasn’t able to properly catch the big fish as Lynch would say about the lunacy of Part 8. So in order to give that complete mindfuck its due before we return to the semblance of a storyline in Part 9, we’re going to do a Lost In The Bang Bang Bar double this week. 5-4-3-2-1… “When the twilight is gone and no songbirds are singing When the twilight is gone you come into my heart And here in my heart you will stay while I pray My prayer is to linger with... -
We Combed Through Rob Goldstone’s Heroically Trashy Facebook So You Don’t Have To: A Photo Essay
13 Jul 2017 | 7:46 amDo you think Rob is a fan of Kevin Aviance? If you’re like me, dearest Filthy Dreams readers, you probably haven’t been able to tear yourself away from the ongoing shit show of the Trump administration this week. I mean, Donald Jr. releasing his own incriminating emails via Twitter? Who could ask for a better story! In fact, I’m so into this whole overly dramatic, thoroughly tacky saga that I’m about ready to pull an anti-Joe Scarborough and register as a Republican. Why let them have all the slimy and morally bankrupt fun! Of course, the true hero to emerge in this entire “But, HIS emails!” tale isn’t anyone in the Trump administration itself (Sorry Kellyanne, you’ll always have my heart).... -
Your Silence Will Not Protect You: “VOICE = SURVIVAL” At The 8th Floor
12 Jul 2017 | 10:10 amLJ Roberts, Portrait of Deb (1988-199?), detail, 2012-13 (Courtesy of the artist) “Silence is my shield, it crushes. Silence is my cloak, it smothers Silence is my sword, it cuts both ways Silence is the deadliest weapon” –Marlon Riggs, from Tongues Untied “My silences had not protected me. Your silence will not protect you,” warns Audre Lorde in her paper The Transformation of Silence Into Language And Action. In this essay, Lorde argues for speaking–the voice–as an essential, if not the most essential, activist tool. She concludes, “The fact that we are here and that I speak these words is an attempt to break the silence and bridge some of those differences between us, for it is not difference... -

Glitch Wood Sculptures by Yoshitoshi Kanemaki
19 Jul 2017 | 4:46 amWood sculptures by Japanese artist Yoshitoshi Kanemaki that defy ordinary anatomy and physical proportion by adding unnatural "glitches" to the human body in the form of multi-headed women, wavy-shaped females, and multi-eyed faces that deviates from traditional portraiture to dreamlike depictions. The many faces probably expresses the ambivalence towards time passing us by.Looking deep into the world in which we live, we realize that everyone holds hesitations or inconsistencies that they can never answer. I think that such ambivalent emotions can be embodied regardless of whether they are surface or deep layer by giving the effect of an irregular shape deviating from human figure. The sculpture series... -
Suspended Void: Drawings by Henrique de Franca
18 Jul 2017 | 4:46 amFragmented pencil drawings combined together to form a narrative by Sao Paulo-based artistHenrique de Franca. The artist uses negative space to fill-in the outlines of buildings, sidewalks, roads, and walls that gives you a hint that they exist in time which adds to their somewhat surreal feel. de Franca's characters were probably taken from his individual memory of past and present situations or from photographic images which he illustrated in his studio for form a story he hopes his viewers can understand.See more ofHenrique de Franca's work on Behance or at his website. -
Drawings in Space: Sculptures by David Moreno
17 Jul 2017 | 4:46 amSteel wire sculptures of imaginary architecture by Barcelona-based artist David Moreno. From a distance, they look like scribbles but upon closer inspection, the works are meticulously welded with a silver thread point and his experimentations with color adds a new dimension to the sculptures. Moreno's architectures explore human relationships and its interconnections just like how he welds every single steel wire dot by dot. He sees the bonds we establish, the flows of energy, the links, affiliations and phobias with those thin lines that unite us to others or to ourselves. It could be interpreted that those small houses drawn in the air are spaces that represent us with which we can identify... -

The facade pattern is made of 3,060 elements using 65 different colors and the semi-transparent kaleidoscope windows, measuring 6.8 meters in height, gives the Rainbow Chapel its charm. The two basic shapes of the chapel, square and circle, alludes to the infinite nature of the connections made... -

Can tourism alleviate global poverty?
18 Jul 2017 | 3:45 pmWouldn’t it be great if something as simple and pleasurable as international travel could help end something as grinding and enduring as global poverty? After all, the industry is booming, growing at least 4% a year since the 1960s (with a brief slowdown in 2009), according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). In 2016, over 1.3 billion international tourists spent an estimated US$1.4 trillion. That’s the equivalent of Australia’s gross domestic product, dispersed around the world. The UN has even declared 2017 the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, heralding the role of international travel in reducing poverty. But how much global tourism money really makes... -

How powerful is protest? Discussing the changing culture of opposition
12 Jul 2017 | 4:33 amThe culture of opposition is an ever-evolving landscape and the role of protest, as an expression of this opposition, has changed significantly over the last two-three decades. Whilst direct action is just as prevalent now as it was years ago, the motivations and nature of protest are different. This month alone has seen protestors across the world continue to make a statement, from the Nuit Dubout protestors occupying the Place de la République in Paris, to the streets of Brazil where millions have gathered to protest against Dilma Rousseff and her government. Whether it’s directed towards a government, corporation or individual, protest is undeniably powerful; but it is worth exploring how it has... -
“Before they pass away” Q&A: fading cultures in photography by Jimmy Nelson
11 Jul 2017 | 4:38 pmJimmy Nelson, in his documentary photography volume Before they Pass Away, offers us a series of gorgeous portraits of the world’s vanishing people. Capturing a pivotal moment in history, he preserves the memory of ancient cultures before they are caught in the eye of globalisation’s spreading storm, and through this we can learn something fundamental about our desire to understand one another, and ourselves. Having travelled the planet for as long as he can remember, Nelson’s dream had always been to document our worlds tribes through his photography: “our world is changing at breakneck speed. Countries that, not so long ago, were considered developing nations are now among the worlds wealthiest....

The Essence of Chandi
30 Jun 2017 | 10:03 pmVarious forms like Durga, Chandi, Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Maha Saraswati are but Her divine forms. Each form of the Devi has a distinctive role meant for a definite purpose. Yet every form is also identified as the Ultimate Reality of the universe. Each form of the Divine Mother is thus a part of the Supreme Divinity. One form may appear different from the other. But in spirit, each such form is one more manifestation springing from the One Source, verily the Supreme Primordial Prakriti. Though the Devi Mahatmyam constitutes chapters 81-93 in the Markandeya Purana, are basically description from purana. It has an intrinsic independent status by itself. Drawing Postcard Sized Pictures with Pastel Pencils
13 Jul 2017 | 3:00 amI recently received an interesting email from one of our members asking my advice concerning subject material for two projects she wants to paint. Her local Hospice is inviting artists to submit two paintings of their choice in a competition, they stipulate that the paintings are to be postcard size. Her question to me is do I have any hints and tips regarding postcard sized pictures and what would I recommend as suitable subjects for this size of painting; her favourite subjects are animals. Postcard size is restrictive and only a little larger than miniature therefore I would suggest that the detail is simplified rather than intricate. Animal portraits would fit the bill nicely here that is head and... -

Ex-Tate Director Chris Dercon And Burkina Faso Architect Francis Kéré Are Joining Forces
7 Jul 2017 | 3:20 amBerlin’s historic Tempelhof Airport will be home to an inspired collaboration by ex-Tate director Chris Dercon, Burkina Faso architect Francis Kr and the city of Berlin. Their coming together at Tempelhof this autumn is sure to reaffirm what we already know, that all three are drastically reshaping the cultural landscape of our time. As the newly appointed head of the internationally renowned Volksbhne in Berlin, Mr. Dercon is causing quite the sensation. The famously experimental theater, which has until now existed as a local symbol of anti-capitalist ideology, will be transformed into a cosmopolitan and participatory meeting point: Playwrights, dancers, musicians and artists from across the globe are... -

Out in the Open: Public artworks not to miss in 2017, and why
22 Jun 2017 | 6:23 amSince time immemorial, artists have turned to the streets. It is a means of creating dialogue and a form of intervention—at times a subtle gesture and at others a Jeff Koons-esque glistening presence that cannot be overlooked. No matter what form it takes, public art creates a connection between a space and the people passing through it to provoke unexpected questions and feelings. Skulptur Projekte Mnster, the public art exhibition which sprawls across the German city every ten years and is now in its 5th edition (which runs until October 2017), is an intriguing insight into the varying ways public environments can be transformed by art to enter into discourses that go beyond the social and economic and... -
Art Basel 2017: Nosing around John Baldessari’s latest creation
15 Jun 2017 | 5:04 amJohn Baldessari, who celebrates his 86th birthday this Saturday, is a force to be reckoned with. It’s no surprise to find him prominently featured at Art Basel this year in the coveted Unlimited section. As expected from Baldessari it’s a bizarre scene, in which ordinarily neglected body parts are given splendidly absurd new roles. Two models, one a woman, one a dog, will spend the next four days lounging around in the surreal, and accurately entitled tableau vivant Ear Sofa; Nose Sconces with Flowers (in Stage Setting). While installations can be notoriously draining experiences (especially at art fairs, where time is precious), Baldessari’s is refreshingly witty and energizing. The seemingly tranquil... -
Masterpiece #20 Richard Hamilton Picasso’s Meninas, 1973
6 Jun 2017 | 9:45 pmWhat is it? A seminal etching by Richard Hamilton that marries Diego Velazquez’s masterpiece Las Meninas (1656) with Pablo Picasso’s visual languages, paying homage to both great Spanish masters. What was the inspiration? In 1971, Hamilton was invited to contribute to a portfolio of print works entitled Hommage Pablo Picasso in celebration of Picasso’s 90th Birthday. After seeing Velzquez’s Meninas at the Prado for the first time in 1972, Hamilton commented that “The temptation to paraphrase Velzquez in Picasso’s styles proved irresistible“. What is happening? In Velzquez’s painting, Princess Margaret Theresa and her meninas—ladies in waiting—are placed at the heart of the composition, with...

How to Draw Cartoon Hands (Comic, Cartoon, and Mickey Mouse)
18 Jul 2017 | 2:28 pmIn this video, I’ll show you how to draw 3 styles of cartoon hands. There’s the super simple Mickey Mouse Hands, the less simple yet highly stylized Cartoon Hands, and the less simple and less stylized Comic Book Hands. In my previous hands lessons, I went over the anatomy of hands, a bunch of detail for realistic hands, like fingernails, skin creases, fat pads, veins and I gave you guys a general process for drawing and inventing hands from imagination. Watching those will definitely help you fully understand how to draw hands, even cartoon hands. Cartoons are just exaggerations of reality. To exaggerate the hand, it helps to know the hand. Let me remind you of the procedure and the forms of the hand... -

Try to figure out if the features are crooked, square, round, close together, or far apart. When you post your assignments to the Facebook group, be sure to include your reference photo and your written checklist along with your rough sketch. *** Solving the Exaggeration with a Checklist In part 1 of this course, we learned that the first step in the caricature process was to do lots of thumbnail... -

‘The Magicians’ Continues the Magic for Harry Potter Generation
16 Jul 2017 | 10:05 pmSyfy’s ‘The Magicians,’ based on the book by Lev Grossman, shows viewers they’re never too old for magic. July 15, 2011, was a warm summer night and at around 2 a.m. we found ourselves running down a street under the glow of bright yellow streetlights. We sped from one patch of light to the next, showing no concern for the headlights and taillights passing beside us. Let the world see us run. We didn’t care. We were burning with excitement, and in that moment nothing seemed better than racing home. What could inspire this flight? That was the night we saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. We had spent the evening in line at our local movie theater, gaping at the elaborate costumes of... -
Transilient Expands the Narrative about Transgender People
16 Jul 2017 | 10:04 pmFollow Transilient on a photo-documentation journey that’s moving the conversation about transgender people beyond gender identity. I was living in New Orleans when I heard about the passing of HB2, or the controversial North Carolina bathroom bill. I was floored by the news and couldn’t leave my house or stop crying that day, because I’m from the Carolinas. I’m also a transgender man. I spent my childhood in South Carolina and my twenties in North Carolina. I was an LGBTQ+ activist in Asheville and ran an LGBTQ+ advocacy group called Just Us for All. The idea that HB2 had passed wasn’t a setback for only transgender people in North Carolina, but for justice in our country as a whole. When... -
A Space for More Than Shhh! The Community Library of the Future
16 Jul 2017 | 10:03 pmIs your community library adapting to a modern learning model? Here are 4 libraries leading the evolution. Back in 1600, when book lending libraries were starting to be established, there was no vision of the 2017 community library. There was no hint that technology might put the lives of physical, bound books at risk. No one in the 1600s could know people would one day sit in front of glowing screens in order to read poetry, get table-building instructions and learn new languages. But that is exactly what happened and because of it, many modern public libraries have chosen adaptation over obsolescence. Their adaptation comes in the form of makerspaces. To clarify, a makerspace is an informal space where... -
Russian Artist Draws Life under Putin
16 Jul 2017 | 10:02 pmVictoria Lomasko’s new book tells the stories of Russia’s voiceless. After facing censorship issues in Russia, the latest work by Russian artist and graphic journalist Victoria Lomasko was published in March of this year by New York–based literary magazine n+1. Other Russias is the first of Lomasko’s work to be published in English and the catalyst to her first American tour. The book is a collection of graphic reportage depicting the life of Russia’s voiceless under Putin. According to the Russian artist, she jumped at the idea of having her work published in the United States and translated into English because of the political tensions between the two nations. “It will be good if Americans... -
Zealandia: What You Need to Know about the ‘New Continent’
16 Jul 2017 | 10:01 pmScientists have uncovered a submerged landmass two-thirds the size of Australia, which has implications for climate science, biology and how Zealandia could be designated a continent. If you could drain the Pacific Ocean, you’d be staring at the lost continent of Zealandia, which is 18 times larger than New Zealand. Although 94 percent submerged, Zealandia, a large region in the southwest Pacific Ocean underlain by continental crust, is gaining momentum to be dubbed a continent, thanks to new research published in GSA Today. Zealandia offers a wealth of insight due to its age: it began separating from the combined Australia-Antarctica portion of Gondwana in the late Cretaceous period around 80 million...

Stunning flexible sculptures are not what they seem
19 Jul 2017 | 5:30 amLi Hongbo – Teaching Aid, 2014, paper Li Hongbo is an artist based in Beijing, China and creates unusual and surprising art pieces from paper. A designer and book editor, Li Hongbo started collecting and experimenting his ideas with paper after being inspired by the festive ‘paper gourd’ decorations and traditional Chinese boys’ toys. Both of these pieces have a simple but amazing ‘honeycomb’ composition and can be molded into any shape. He takes thousands of paper sheets and glues them together to make a large block of paper. He then carves into the paper by the use of an electronic saw and makes a form that is stretchable, just like an accordion. This transforms the final piece into something... -
Everything they own: Intimate portraits of Chinese families
17 Jul 2017 | 5:00 amHuang Qingjun – Family Stuff Normally, life is viewed from the perspective of people as they appear in public. It is not unusual to come across a rich looking individual only to realize that their background or where they call home is not as lavish. When what we consider to be normal is transformed inside out, then a whole new dynamism of sights emerges. When Huang Qingjun took his first family picture of such nature in 2003, it would be the beginning of a new view in photography. Together with Ma Hongjie, they have for 10 years now been capturing scenes of life in its fragility. China is a big economy competing on the global front with countries such as the US, UK, and Japan. These pictures aim to... -

Still life painting covers facade of museum in LA
11 Jul 2017 | 10:59 amJonas Wood – Still Life with Two Owls, 2016, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles Photo: Elon Schoenholz The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles may feel hidden because of its downtown location. For a long time since it was designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, it has been associated with its less conspicuous qualities. Since L.A. painter Jonas Wood covered the museum building facade with a reproduction of his Still Life With Two Owls painting of 2014, the vinyl production has not only revitalized the downtown street but the museum’s interior as well. There is no shortage of dazzling architecture in the modern era and for a museum to stay quiet in a vibrant city like Los Angeles... -
Surprising freestanding waterfall at famous French landmark
7 Jul 2017 | 6:00 amOlafur Eliasson – Waterfall, 2016, crane, water, stainless steel, pump system, hose, ballast, Chateau de Versailles, Versailles, France Photo: Anders Sune Berg In his 2016 work on the Versailles waterfall, Olafur Eliasson made displacements and destabilization which have changed the perceptions people had about the famous landmark. Before he began his work, he approached the Chateau and gardens of Versailles to experiment whether the project was implementable. His work didn’t involve installation of objects, but rather coming up with an apparatus which kept visitors engaged. The erection of the ‘waterfall’ in the Grand Canal where a surge of water rushes down a crane standing tall in the air turned...

Will Buying a Dress Form or Mannequin Improve Your Sewing?
13 May 2017 | 4:25 amRegardless if you are a beginner or sew for a living, a dress form is a useful piece of equipment to have in your arsenal. Since we all know that fitting is the most difficult and frustrating part of sewing, let’s make it a little bit easier today. Dress Form Vs. Mannequin Beginners often ask which mannequin body for sewing is best. This shows some misunderstanding about the difference between a dress form and a mannequin, and which one you need for sewing. In a nutshell #28
17 Jul 2017 | 1:30 amSo this is going to be a new series of posts. Why does it start at #28? Simply, because this series starts at week #28 of 2017. I have this internal monologue in my brain and I think I need to get it out of my head and onto paper, well screen in this case. So every Sunday I’m going to record a short (or long, we’ll see) record of the past week and what I’ve been up to. The good, the bad and the ugly. After all this is a web log and what’s a blog without a weekly log huh? Goals and Deadlines We’re halfway through the year and I’m heading towards my September deadline. What deadline I hear you ask? The self-imposed deadline (since leaving my job last year to go freelance) that says if I’m not achieving my... -

So I would say I have started my journey. Plus I’m fascinated at how minimalism boosts creativity. They say the journey is the destination and my quest I have discovered a wonderful lady whose blog, inspiration, gorgeous Instagram feed, free downloads and wisdom on social media is guiding me through my minimalist journey. When your children want to fly the nest [One Mother’s Reflection]
2 Jun 2017 | 3:13 amThere we are, all five of us, sitting around the dining room table, on a sunny Friday night in May. It’s been so warm, we’ve cooked and shared a delicious family barbeque. I’ve even treated myself to a glass of vino or two. Life is good. And then number 1 son, 15 years old, drops the bombshell. “Dad’s sent me details of an excellent college in north London. I’ve decided I’m going to do my A-levels in London and live with Dad. Plus I get my own room and means I can get away from Jake.” (Son number 2, 13 years old.) Uh?? Stunned silence. Then immense irritation at the ex-husband for sending college details to number 1 son without even mentioning it to me. Biting My Tongue I hope that I showed maturity...
