What do widely diverse crises such as declining demography, increasing indebtedness, Generation Z’s indifference to religion and patriotism, static rates of home ownership, and a national epidemic of ignorance about American history and traditions all have in common? In a word, 21st-century higher education. Colleges are turning out woke and broke graduates. The curricula in the social sciences and humanities are largely politicized. Ignorance, arrogance, and ingratitude are now the brands of the undergraduate experience. No wonder a once duly honored institution, higher education, is now either the butt of jokes or cynically seen as a credentialing factory.

"We don't fact-check political ads," Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a recent speech. Facebook chooses not to play the role of speech police, at least as far as political ads are concerned. "As a principle, in a democracy, I believe people should decide what is credible, not tech companies," Zuckerberg said. It's an understatement to say Facebook has problems. It has abused its users' privacy. There are legitimate complaints about its bias. It has a frightening power over the world of journalism. It could face government antitrust action. The ad policy Zuckerberg outlined — if it is followed — would be the right thing to do.

The Washington Nationals are just the organization to step up and fill that healing leadership role. The Nats’ front office should invite President Trump to throw out the first pitch at Friday night’s Game 3, the first of the series to be played at Nationals Park in D.C. Mr. Trump on the mound would remind the career politicians in Washington that far more unites Americans than divides us, no matter how much they work to needle and exploit for their own personal gain the differences among us. During more politically decent times, a move like this would be routine and expected. Can you imagine the size of the crowd?

It’s his weakness that really grates, the pseudo-gentlemanly submissiveness to the abuse of the elite we saw for far too long among our alleged True Conservative™ betters. We’ve learned that “being the bigger man” and not fighting back were not some sort of higher principle being put into action but were, rather, the manifestation of the weakness inherent in the conservatives of the cruise ship class. Candy Crowley humiliated him in front of the entire country and he just took it. Well, we’re sick of just taking it. He and his human puffball ilk are why we said “Ahoy” to Donald Trump. Hey Mitt, I want my vote back.

There's been a lot of confusion about what, exactly, President Trump's concerns were before withholding and later approving U.S. military aid to Ukraine. Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, made a hash of things during his much-discussed press conference. The story is more complicated than some press coverage suggests. Four of Trump's reasons for withholding aid were legitimate. The fifth was not. But the fact remains that the president had acceptable reasons to temporarily hold back aid. There's more to the story than just Trump's fifth reason. And on that, perhaps the president should just take Rich Lowry's advice and move on.

We are told we can require 50 percent, 60 percent and even 100 percent renewable energy over the next decade at no cost to consumers or businesses. If so. Why must the subsidies continue ad infinitum? If $100 billion of taxpayer handouts hasn’t worked, what will? My hunch is that the lifelines Washington keeps tossing to the wind and solar industry have been more curse than blessing. Subsidies can be as addictive as heroin. A cold turkey cut off of taxpayer aid would force the renewable industry to adopt strategies and innovations that would make them viable competitors in energy markets.  Necessity really is the mother of invention.

Our constitutional system will be damaged because impeachment will be discredited. Its invocation will be even less likely in some grievous future instance, when a presidential abuse of power actually does imperil the nation. We will have a virtually omnipotent president. As a practical matter, there will be no viable congressional check — no impeachment, no power of the purse — to rein the president in. The powers of the competing political branches will be in gross imbalance, making functional separation of powers impossible. As the Framers would tell us, that is not a prescription for the preservation of liberty.
