Joann Fabrics Pattern Sale August 7-9!

5 Aug

5458714but8714Halloween is right around the corner in case you need to stock up on patterns and do some costume planning, too!

I don’t really need more patterns, but I’m still looking for a tall, slim wedding gown pattern. This may be a job to Franken-pattern or self-draft to get exactly what I want, but it’s also nice to have a back up. Therefor, I am considering picking up copies of Butterick 5981, Simplicity 1689, Simplicity 1420, and Butterick 5719. What a fabulous business wardrobe!

Casual Summer Wedding Ideas

21 Mar

I’m planning a simple, inexpensive wedding for June of next year. It would be very nontraditional and casual, set outdoors, with few guests, no bridesmaids, no groomsmen, no church, no pastor, and no religion. Just a quick backyard ceremony and then dinner with close family, so I guess it’s more like a BBQ. My older sister did the same thing a few years ago.

Theme: I love the “beach wedding” aesthetic and light, airy colors.

Bridal Attire: I want to make my own white satin dress. I have changed my mind so many times but as of now I want something long and form-fitting with a bow in the back. Length would be down to my feet but not gracing the floor, so no train. However, the trains on these inspiration gowns are gorgeous!

Left to right: Simplicity New Look 6401, Vintage Vogue 4977, Lace Wedding Dress on Etsy, French Lace Wedding Dress on Etsy.

Groomswear: Casual suit in pure white, silver-gray, or linen. Maybe a matching tie, vest, and trouser with a crisp, white shirt and rolled-up sleeves. I’d like to sew everything myself, or at least make a matching vest and tie.

Everything else: Grilled chicken, potato salad, pasta toss, sheet cake or cupcakes, ice cream, and sunglasses as party favors,.

Rustic Chic?

20 Dec

rustic_chic_bedroom2333454

I love shabby chic, especially the French variety, but “rustic chic” (like the picture there) makes me claustrophobic just looking at it. I know that it’s only meant to appear as if it’s in a state of major disrepair, but I’d still be afraid of all those bricks and wood beams falling on me. Eep!

I lost my promise ring, oh no

I was bummed out because of sentimental value, absolutely, but it was only $10 costume jewelry. I never want to own a BLOOD DIAMOND, so I had originally picked out a very simple 3 piece his and hers set made of CZ and stainless steel, shown on the left. The new ring hasn’t arrived yet, but since I really like blue sapphires I decided to order this lovely 5mm round blue and white sapphire cz ring set with a half eternity band.

It’s that time of year again

1 Oct

It’s October and Halloween is my favorite Holiday. There’s something mystical about getting to wear a disguise for a day. No wonder I love sewing patterns for fun costumes.

In fact, the first two sewing patterns that I ever bought were for Halloween costumes, and each pattern had separate outfits for men and women (shown above). I was only a kid and I couldn’t really sew, but we had a new-to-us vintage Singer sewing machine and I wanted them, so I picked out two Butterick sewing patterns from Jo-Ann Fabrics just for fun. I didn’t even know how to use a sewing pattern, yet I was enamored with the Cleopatra, Nefertiti, and Julius Caesar costumes; ancient Egypt has long been a fascination to me. The other one was a strange retro style Austin Powers and “Hippie Chick” disco get-up. I never had a chance to make either one as they both seemed to have disappeared a few years after that, but recently I saw pictures of the patterns for sale online and this jogged my memory, so I located the cheapest copy of Butterick 3587 only and snatched it up.

Austin Powers shall remain a “bad sewing” relic of the past.

Wishlist: Wiggle Dresses

2 Aug

lilliannwiggledress I want the perfect 1950’s long, slim wiggle dress pattern that does everything: wing collar, round collar, no collar, detachable collar, scarf, cuffs, belt, sash, cummerbund, set-in short sleeves, long sleeves, quarter sleeves, sleeveless, optional full skirt, mermaid skirt, ribbon trim, bows, or train, and matching hat, gloves, fitted jacket, cape, bolero, and long coat.

“No pattern does all of that!” you say.

Well, mine will.

Oh yes, it will.

My search continues.

Keira Knightley Goes to the Dark Side

7 Jul

The 1980’s fashion crime wave has claimed another victim.

This is most unfortunate. However, Keira Knightley just doesn’t give a shit.

Keira’s been rocking eclectic vintage fashion for a very long time now, often pairing tights with shorts, or big sunglasses and vintage, bohemian florals, then she tops it all off with a hat stolen out of Boy George’s closet. In fact, her style hasn’t changed one bit. A slight 80’s influence was always there, only it wasn’t that noticeable until she went full emo. Besides, incorporating different elements from the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 60’s & 80’s has always worked well for her. Now if anything she could replace Kimmy Gibbler on a modern reboot of Full House. (This outfit would look especially great. I’m just full of ideas. Any television producers want to do lunch? ;))

But Keira the flapper is not gone for good. Luckily one of her upcoming films is set in 1920’s New York, and a recent discovery is that I adore 1920’s fashion, like the pic on the right. More on that later.
