Blue Tiles Falls, Molonglo Gorge
Celebration: countdown 27

During the past few years, i have spent an increasing amount of time out in the field exploring distant places. It came as a shock to me to find i had overlooked closer falls. I am sure that was not always the case, but these days few seem to relish adventure beyond that offered by virtual entertainment. A while back, I explored (and had fun naming for my own benefit) the falls of the Molonglo Gorge. The Gorge hosts dozens of small runs and delicious warm pools, some with sandy banks: 'human-sized' falls, for a hot summer. I saw few people as i hiked.

At the end of the gorge was once a small farming community, and before that a waterhole of the first people. The farmhouses have fallen into ruin, but i found plenty of evidence of much early occupation in stone carvings and tool sharpening workshops. This is one of the places that already had a name, so, under the rules of international law i let the original stand , although no one remembers why it is called Blue Tiles nor the first people's name it replaced.
