one of the less-covered chapters of Bad Sex explores this idea of "compulsory sexuality" and how harmful it can be, whether you're asexual or just sick of wack sex. it can also be liberating to simply say "no thank u"

I wrote for @washingtonpost @BookWorld about recent nonfiction that tackles why people tolerate bad consensual sex and also what happens when people don’t want to have sex at all washingtonpost.com/books/2023/05/

this is the first time i really go in on how deeply fucked up it is for parents of young kids (at least in public)

"My jealousy is actually less now than it was before, even though I have less desire to get with other people at this moment."
An absolute pleasure to talk to @nona about Bad Sex, non-monogamy after kids, & (ofc) childcare.

like the discrimination is the problem, not children’s bodies! imagine if experts recommended skin lightening creams to black ppl in order to fight racism or widespread botox for old people to fight ageism. huh???

maybe i’ve been listening to too much but this ep of the daily seems insane! admitting that many obese ppl don’t have health problems yet aggressive measures (like bariatric surgery for teens) is warranted bc of…discrimination??

This is a sad day for . This company pledged $150 million in stock buybacks this year, but it’s offering staff what amounts to a pay cut, during record inflation in the most expensive city in the world. I love the Times and wish it loved me back.

My household is commencing sleep training on Mon bc there is no way someone (aka me) who has slept through the night zero times since May 11 (aka my daughter’s bday) is being the best parent they can be

This extremely good piece is ostensibly about sleep training but it’s also about how breastfeeding (and by extension night wakings/feedings) will completely destroy your egalitarian partnership if you let it

I picked this up on yesterday’s bookstore crawl to see the imprint’s first book on shelves. WOW it’s so good. An intersectional look at our cultural toxic history of women & sex & marriage, mixed w/ memoir. Every sentence validates female desire as worthy of respect & priority.

this is an extremely thoughtful review of Bad Sex in which showcases the chapter I feel most proud of, on heteropessimism:
Quote Tweet
"Her delight is an antidote to a nihilistically glum attitude that’s fashionable today—the belief that heterosexual romance is horrible, doomed, and destined to repeat a tired old script."

Pundits are all “women are registering to vote in record numbers” and at first I was skeptical about whether women are really *that* much more pro choice than men….but according to this Gallup poll, they really are—as of like two years ago:

Everyone’s talking about Nickel and Dimed but several Ehrenreich books were also key to my feminist/sexuality education. This deep cut is one of my faves about American masculinity. RIP Barbara ❤️

Barbara Ehrenreich is gone. I'd say "May her memory be a blessing" to those who were with her; may it be a scourge to those who were against her, as it was during her life. May she rest in power, may her words keep working

For Black women in Mississippi it’s already 75 times more dangerous to give birth than it is to get an abortion.
SEVENTY-FIVE TIMES.
Now factor in no clean water. It’s a legitimate human rights crisis.
