    Does anyone else have that thing where you read books, and like them, and feel like you''re learning a lot about some topic. But then when you're done you literally couldn't recall two facts from the entire thing.

    I started publishing my semi-private thoughts on this year, and it's been a good experiment so far. Less traffic than on Twitter etc, but anyone taking the time to read it probably cares more, and gives me better feedback.

    Sharing your deepest thoughts typically happens in private. If you do it in public, it helps to add a "speed bump" of sorts. Not all public content needs to be widely broadcasted: keeping it hidden in plain view reduces the threat of context collapse.

    I think the best way to learn about how someone thinks is by going through their browsing history, email, notes (w/ consent). Only 2 people have let me go through their data & I've learnt a lot about them that they didn't share b/c they thought it was too trivial or controversial

    That also free's you up to write a new thing, and learn another new skill, and potentially level up yet again. It's not that the value of doing OSS decreases over time for the individual, it's the value derived from maintaining the same thing.

    Exploitation is work without compensation, whether money or social capital. Problem with OSS is value of the latter declines over time, while work demanded increases. Not exploitation, just a failure of incentives.

    "Open Source is exploitive free labor" ... except in my case, in which my contributions directly lead to the current professional opportunities I have, the freedom to choose between those opportunities, and the increase in personal wealth from those opportunities.

    Many of the older people I most admire are actively _not_ nostalgic for the past, even their own glorious pasts. Interesting balance: learning but not yearning for the past. Good to actively aspire toward.

    I'm looking for a word to describe the idea that infrastructure is only useful when it's "called", like code is called. Is there a concept to describe this? Ex. a book nobody reads, or a road nobody drives on, is "creative work" but shouldn't factor into public social cost

    The idea that we can morally perfect ourselves BEFORE we invent new technologies seems like a fantasy to me. "Fix our problems here on Earth before we explore space!", etc. etc. It doesn't work like that. It can't.
