    To be fair here, this isn’t a ding on April’s background. But this is the political economy of tech commentary now: overvaluing the ahistorical take. And a lot of people hyped that BuzzFeed piece who thrived in such a mutually reinforcing tech/media economy.

    Never heard of John Brunner, a British SF writer from the 1970s? He anticipated the internet.. and a lot of today’s madnesses. Here’s an article by him I commissioned at New Scientist. Ponder.

    There are so many harmful effects of the whole "rugged individualism/American exceptionalism/Protestant work ethic" triumvirate of bullshit but one in particular that I'm thinking about is how it destroys the ability of those who buy into it to think systemically

    Sometimes friends of mine are bemused by me still buying dvds and BluRays, clinging on to physical media. But here’s why: these streaming libraries can be gone in a flash. There’s few comprehensive film collections out there to stream classics. FilmStruck sadly was the best one.
