    Major tech companies are filled with economists (h/t and ). Preston McAfee, Paul Milgrom, and Al Roth (and others) design markets from spectrum to school matching. Aren’t those a closer measure of real world applicability?

    If economists aren't delivering insights of value to the rest of the academy, then maybe we've gone too far into the weeds. Or maybe we just can't communicate our insights in language that others understand.

    I love this advice - I think academia can lead to a very unhappy life if you don't embrace this view. The top of the status hierarchy in academia is by definition scarce - the opportunities to learn & increase human knowledge are not

    Repeating this advice I got and that often helps me: focus on what we can learn and what we can contribute. This takes the focus off ourselves and our worries about looking good and towards the world and people around us. Helps me remember why I chose econ in the first place.
