I’m a bit embarrassed that we fell for this. Normally our guard is up sky high. Moral of the story: the bad guys in Russia are still highly motivated and going after all their enemies and we all need to be hyper vigilant

The conversation became even weirder and very “un-presidential”. When we checked the origin of the email after the call to see if we had been tricked, we discovered the domain was set up in Russia in December last year.

Someone impersonating former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko tricked me and my team into a Teams call using a clumsy but convincing deep fake. It all started credibly, then he started talking about taking Russian oligarchs off the sanctions list and something seemed off.

The Canadian government rarely uses the Magnitsky Act to sanction human rights abusers. For some reason they don’t want to repeat Sergei Magnitsky’s name. Instead they use the SEMA 1992 Act. has a legislative solution: rename SEMA to Magnitsky. Brilliant
