#DYK the Kori Bustard is the heaviest flying bird in Africa—& one of the overall heaviest flying birds in the world? Males weigh ~42 lbs (19 kg) & females weigh ~12 lbs (5.5 kg). It prefers to stick to stay grounded though, only taking flight when threatened. [

Say “hi” to the okapi! This shy ungulate is a forest-dwelling relative of the giraffe and is endemic to rainforests in Central Africa. The stripes on the animal’s striking coat help camouflage it in its densely vegetated, sun-dappled habitat. [

It’s August! So we’re highlighting the Ermine & Vole diorama, which takes place on an August morning in Baxter State Park, Maine. In a heartbeat, this ermine will dart at an oblivious vole & dispatch it with a swift bite to the neck.

Meet the Spanish shawl! This sea slug is immune to the stinging cells of the anemones it feeds on. It then steals its prey's defense mechanism for itself, storing the stinging cells on the tentacle-like appendages on its back, called cerata. [

When the Sinornithosaurus millennii fossil was discovered in Liaoning, China, it joined a growing list of dinosaur fossils showing evidence that animals other than birds had a featherlike covering. This fossil is unique for its astonishingly clear feather imprints.

Say “thanks” to Lestodon on
#NationalAvocadoDay. Giant ground sloths, like Lestodon, ate avocados whole, traveled—& then pooped! Most mammals couldn't handle large seeds, so it was up to these 15-ft (4.6 m) animals, & other megafauna, to disperse & fertilize avocados.

To attract a mate, males of the genus Micrixalus—a.k.a. dancing frogs—get their groove on. They wave their feet at females during courtship rituals, a behavior known as foot-flagging. If one male interrupts another males’ dance, he might even get kicked!

Nanotyrannus' existence has long been debated in paleontology. Some argue that these supposed “dwarf tyrannosaurs” are merely juveniles of T. rex. Others think that it’s a separate species & point to differences in anatomy, like brain shape. What do you think? [

#DYK that Blue Jays mimic hawk cries, possibly as a way to intimidate other birds & steal bits of food they leave behind while fleeing? Unlike Flamingos, who get their pink color from their diet, Blue Jays appear blue because of structural coloration.

One of the largest threats tigers face is habitat loss & competition for living space & resources with a growing human population. To protect the species, conservation scientists are working to safeguard their habitats in Asia & to prevent illegal poaching.
