Our mission
Expand access to quality nutrition through food system innovation.
Future vision
We strive to provide an affordable means to achieve a healthy lifestyle. We see a world where nearly one billion people do not have sufficient access to affordable food while more than two billion people are overweight or obese – both groups are malnourished. We at Soylent seek to use science, technology, and enterprise as tools to improve the quality and accessibility of nourishing food. Our goal is to support the development of a world where access to affordable, complete nutrition - one of the most basic human needs - is no longer a challenge, but a means of empowerment.
Founding story
The co-founders of Soylent met while working on a pair of startups under the same roof in Sunnyvale, CA. Living off a diet of frozen corn dogs and ramen, they grew frustrated with the effort and cost associated with purchasing, preparing, and consuming food that was neither healthy nor enjoyable. Recognizing an unmet need, CEO/Founder Rob Rhinehart, alongside co-founders Matt Cauble, John Coogan, and David Renteln, developed Soylent as an experiment. The product was aptly named in homage to Harry Harrison's 1966 science fiction novel Make Room! Make Room!, which explores the impact massive population growth could have on world resources. When online audiences heard about the experiment, the story went viral, and the co-founders quickly realized that this experiment solved a problem not only for themselves but for thousands of people around the world. They turned their full attention to making Soylent and all of its later iterations and improvements available to all.
Our Commitment to action
At Soylent, we believe it is possible to do well by doing good. We use our domestic consumer business to help provide much needed nutrition to people around the world. In 2016, we have pledged to donate a minimum of 1 million meals to those who need greater access to nutrition, both in the US and around the world. We are building a business model to allow us to responsibly increase the amount of food that we donate as we grow.
Our Support for WFP USA
We are proud to support World Food Program USA in their mission to make hunger history. Based in Washington, D.C., World Food Program USA works to solve global hunger by raising U.S. support to advance the mission of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. In 2015, WFP provided direct food assistance to 76.7 million people in 81 countries – most of them women and children.
For every case of Soylent Bar or Coffiest sold, we will donate one meal to World Food Program USA to feed hungry children in need. Furthermore, for every new subscriber through our Friend Referral Program, we will donate four meals to World Food Program USA to celebrate the spread of good nutrition.
