Support Rapid Systems Growth with a Design-First Approach

Talk Description

Viasat delivers the real internet to millions of airline passengers across the globe on many of the world’s leading airlines. This session highlights how Viastat enabled a real-time data management model for developers to deliver APIs across components that span airspace-to-orbit-to-ground using the SwaggerHub Domain technology. Cyndi will show you how to reign in far-reaching elements of a system, use a design-first approach to establish a common hierarchical data dictionary and create reusable components for building system APIs.  The result is a scalable solution to manage a complex environment, support rapid system growth and provide a common language for everyone to design and build the system.

Bio

Cyndi Recker is a System Engineer at Viasat, where she works to design and deliver in-flight connectivity for end-to-end performance from concept to operation. She naturally likes to solve problems and draws from over 20 years experience in hardware and software development, and finds there is always a way to deliver an effective solution.

How BDD Can Save Agile

Talk Description

As lead developer of Cucumber and author of The Cucumber Book, Matt gets asked to consult with organizations who want to introduce Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD). Time after time, he meets teams who are trapped doing half-arsed agile. They do the easy, obvious, visible agile practices, and none of the powerful, hard-to-master, hard-to-see ones.

When these teams ask for help learning BDD, we get a chance to remind them how important conversations and collaboration are in software development. We teach them to write tests before they write code, as a way to explore and discover the hidden details of a requirement just before they dive in and start building it. We teach them to use those tests to refactor their code to keep it clean, allowing it to continue to evolve with the business needs for years to come.

This talk will make you wince with recognition, laugh with despair, and finally inspire you with stories of teams that have finally discovered the true collaborative heart of agile software development. You’ll see patterns you recognize from your own teams, and gain insights about how to fix them.

Bio

Matt is one of the world's leading BDD practitioners. A programmer, coach, trainer and popular international speaker, he was invited to join the Cucumber core team in 2009. Together with Aslak Hellesøy, he's co-author of The Cucumber Book, Behaviour-Driven Development for Developers and Testers and a co-founder of Cucumber Ltd.

Overcoming the Challenges of BDD: Opsview’s Journey with Hiptest

Talk Description

When people talk about Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD), the topic quickly turns to automation tools and languages such as Cucumber and Gherkin. All too often teams think they’re doing BDD because the testers write Given/When/Then tests and have some automation. But, this is missing the true purpose and value of BDD. Just ask yourself:

  • How are you driving development?

  • What behaviour is being represented in your scenarios?

  • Could a non-technical person understand your scenarios?

  • How are you collaborating?

  • Are you writing scenarios designed to fail until functionality is implemented?

  • Does the entire Scrum team take ownership for the scenarios?

Doing true BDD is challenging. It requires communication, buy-in and engagement with all stakeholders, a lot of thinking, rigour, consistency and organisation. However, if you get it right, BDD contributes to earlier confidence in, and increased, quality, consistent delivery and shorter time to market. In addition, it can help turn a QA function into a high performing team.

In this talk, Andrew will demonstrate how Opsview uses Hiptest to alleviate many common pitfalls of BDD and are now reaping the benefits. He’ll show how to improve collaboration, organise your tests, automate more quickly and cleanly and show how Hiptest can help you collaborate and design your tests before a line of code has been written.

Bio

Andrew is a QA Lead at Opsview with over 15 years of experience in testing a range of systems - including web UIs, APIs, big data processing applications and mobile devices. During that time, he has been continuously striving to improve and innovate testing approaches and automation. When not working, his time and energy is taken up by his 7 year-old twin daughters.

Maximize Test Automation Initiatives With A Risk-Based Approach

Talk Description

In today’s fast paced industry, the speed and volume in which applications and services are being deployed has made it impossible for everything to be tested manually. The key to maximizing test automation efforts is by “Shifting left” and leveraging a continuous integration environment to deploy high quality software at speed – but this relies on the ability to implement automation at every stage of your life cycle. Applying a risk-based approach to your testing efforts ensures that you are testing the right things at the right times to make sure your software fully satisfies the business. Carson will walk you through this process and approach.

Bio

Carson Underwood is the QA Automation Supervisor at O’Reilly Autoparts. As a veteran of software development, Carson has extensive experience across test management, project management, design, and level scripting. Carson played an integral role in selecting automation tools (TestComplete) and developing a set of standards and frameworks.

How to Boost Testing Productivity with Parameterized Shared Test Steps

Talk Description

General Motors consistently leverages shared test steps to augment the net productivity of test case creation, automation, and maintenance. By leveraging built-in ReadyAPI functionality, users can build a re-useable library of test cases that can then be leveraged across the entire ReadyAPI Project. We will dive into how we built groovy scripts to execute extensive and complex processes such as executing shell scripts on remote servers and validating data stage processes with custom text files. Many analysts and engineers in Quality Assurance can become overwhelmed when testing intricate systems, and we will walk through examples of how to lessen the overall test execution effort.

Bio

Zac is currently a Test Automation Developer at General Motors. He has B.S. Computer Science degree, and has worked with other Fortune 500 companies including The Coca-Cola Company on Big Data Analytics and Microservice Test Automation.

Eliminate Tool Limitations with the “Test Infrastructure as a Freeway” Approach

Talk Description

Developers and Testers, have you ever had a tool you wanted to use but couldn’t?  Managers, Architects, and Support Teams, are you tired of having to support so many tools you can’t keep them all straight?  Introducing the “Test Infrastructure as a Freeway” approach - which can bridge this dichotomy and make both end-users and infrastructure support teams feeling valued. We will demonstrate the benefits of leveraging this concept in the both the legacy development environment as well as the Continuous Delivery and containerized pipeline environment by showing how we apply this concept using ReadyAPI at USAA as an example.

Bio

Bryan Osterkamp is a Technical Architect Principal at USAA. He is responsible for testing infrastructure and automation tooling across all lines of business and technology stacks. Bryan has always had a passion for testing, even as a developer and application architect, providing architecture and technical leadership in multiple application areas at USAA for fifteen years. Outside of USAA, Bryan enjoys guest lecturing and sharing at conferences to advance the discipline of architecture and testing.
