In celebration of its 231st anniversary as the nation's first state-chartered institution of higher education, the University of Georgia will host a weeklong series of events, including the 14th annual Founders Day Lecture. The lecture, hosted by Thomas C. Reeves, professor emeritus of learning, design, and technology, will occur on Jan. 27 at 1:30p.m. in the Chapel. A former Fulbright lecturer and retired UGA faculty member, Reeves will discuss the race between human learning and machine learning.

UGA researcher receives $2.1 million MERIT award from NIH

The National Institutes of Health Institute of General Medical Sciences awarded a $2.1 million, five-year extension to the University of Georgia’s Jorge C. Escalante to support his study of vitamin B-12. The MERIT, Method to Extend Research in Time, award is an extension of an initial five-year award announced in 2010. The NIH MERIT award is given to less than 5 percent of NIH-funded investigators in all disciplines.

UGA to reduce class sizes

UGA to reduce class sizes

The University of Georgia recently announced a major hiring initiative to reduce class sizes, create new course sections, and increase students’ interaction with faculty.

UGA’s $4.4 million investment will result in 56 new hires and create 319 new course sections in 81 majors, the majority of which will have fewer than 18 students. By reducing the number of large class sections in critical instruction areas, the University will further improve student learning and success.

Informatics Hiring Initiative

Through a new major hiring initiative, the University of Georgia is strengthening its involvement in informatics, a rapidly growing field that examines massive datasets. The university plans to hire eight tenure-line faculty members who will conduct research in this burgeoning field. Because informatics is a broad area, this hiring initiative will engage many disciplines and could bring new faculty members to any of UGA’s 17 schools and colleges.

$2.99M NSF grant to fund graduate student’s training

The National Science Foundation awarded the University of Georgia a five-year, $2.99 million grant to develop an interdisciplinary graduate training program in disease ecology.  As a part of the new NSF Research Traineeship initiative, this program will provide students with skills to solve complex problems in a field of increasing importance. Vanessa Ezenwa, an associate professor in the Odum School of Ecology and the College of Veterinary Medicine’s infectious diseases department, will lead the new program.

Archway Partnership

Archway Partnership

The Archway Partnership, a unit of the Office of Public Service and Outreach, was launched in 2005 to extend access to higher education resources across the state and address critical community-identified needs. In its first 10 years, Archway has served 11 Georgia communities through collaborations with UGA's 17 colleges and schools and other higher education institutions. Archway provides direct access for faculty and students to experience the opportunities and challenges facing communities in Georgia.

The University of Georgia and the Clarke County School District have launched Experience UGA, a partnership that seeks to bring each of the 13,000 Clarke County students to UGA’s campus every year. Through a variety of field trips, students participate in hands-on, curricular-based learning activities.
