I mainly just background things and let my subconscious work on them. Not sure I know how to stop that just for a week :)

I'm a lot better at that than I used to be. I know a proper break makes me more effective in the medium/long term.

Yup. End user control is important, within bounds I think. My machine mainly updates over night. So it's mainly just the occasional boot from scratch rather than reboot and upgrade cycle. The exception was when I'm on other timezones and I get the full effect

I'm on insiders builds for my primary machine so it's an occasional occurrence, but I mainly have things configured so it's not updating in the morning

I now don't expect to see a job advertised that would excite me in the rest of my career. So having a network of folks to talk with who know what I can do and can introduce me to, or are themselves, exec level folks doing interesting things becomes super important

Most companies hire (and need) more specialists than generalists. But as an avowed generalist I find a big demand for what I do. But that demand is nearly never represented in job ads or well understood by HR folks. So the "getting a job" part is much messier

My now 5 years of remote experience says you can still do that when you want. ie. head into London on occasion, grab a desk (you know folks who will lend you space), see some people, wander around, take nice photos, etc.

In fairness this is 10 minutes once in a while. Defaulting to auto-updates is much better for the security of the whole. I think you feel the problem more on devices you only occasionally use.

That if I fly out Friday I'll have a day and a half at home before my next trip. If I fly tomorrow I'll have less than a day :(

So many feels about this. I find it hard when it basically comes down to do what I say, not what I do. Knowing that I would ignore my own advice.
