This week marked the anniversary of the death of George Gershwin, who composed such iconic works as Rhapsody in Blue and Porgy and Bess. Last month, we found a "new" letter to Rabbi Samuel Sandmel, in which Gershwin mentions his American and Jewish influences!

Regina Jonas, the first female Rabbi, was ordained in Germany on December 27, 1935. She performed rabbinical duties until she was sent to Auschwitz in 1944. It would take until 1972 before Sally Priesand was ordained.
