American white pelicans often fly in evenly spaced lines or V formations. Their necks are doubled back against their shoulders in flight, unlike swans or geese which fly with necks outstretched.

UPDATE: Crews began our annual black-footed ferret surveys last night. They located, trapped, and vaccinated FIVE (5) new wild-born kits. We also trapped a Kangaroo rat! (Illustration by Louis Agassiz Fuertes (1874-1927)).

2018 Waterfowl Population Status - Total populations were estimated at 41.2 million breeding ducks in the traditional survey area, 13 percent lower than last year’s estimate of 47.3 million and 17 percent above the LTA. Species-by-species breakdown:
