Trimble Connect for HoloLens utilizes mixed reality for project coordination by providing precise alignment of holographic data on the job site, enabling workers to review their models overlaid in the context of the physical environment.
With two-way communication to the Trimble Connect cloud, users always have the most up-to-date data on their site, literally.
Save time by efficiently visualizing, conveying and interacting with complex 3D data
Add context to structural data and geo-referenced assets by overlaying them onto the real-world
Collaborate with remote stakeholders to more effectively communicate design intent
Increase engagement and buy-in among diverse stakeholders
Trimble’s Mixed Reality team provides visionary consumers in Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Facility Operations, Mining, Geospatial and Natural Resources an opportunity to experience how mixed reality technology can transform the way they work.
Trimble Connect for HoloLens utilizes mixed-reality technology to take your 3D content off the screen and into the real-world, providing project stakeholders with enhanced 3D design review, coordination, collaboration, and project management processes.
Built on the cloud-hosted Trimble Connect collaboration platform, Trimble Connect for HoloLens is going to change how you think about 3D.

Mixed Reality technology blends real-world objects with digital content, interactively, and in real-time. Together with holographic technology, it brings the models out of the screen and helps people efficiently interpret physical and digital information, and the spatial relations between them.
The projected holograms can appear life-like and can move, be shaped, and change according to interaction with the user or the physical environment. Gestures, gaze and voice commands can be used to navigate and control the presented content.
Trimble has been researching the use of mixed reality since 1997 when our first patent for an outdoor augmented reality application was filed. Since then, Trimble has teamed up with over a dozen hardware and software providers to be among the first to bring relevant mixed reality software applications to the enterprise market.
Mixed Reality and holographic technology bring the models out of the screen and provide users the ability to engage and interact with design data more intuitively. Moreover, unleashing the 3D model democratizes the data by offering a natural way to experience and understand the design. While years of education and practice might train architects and structural engineers to visualize their designs in 3D, other stakeholders have a hard time deciphering them.
Virtual reality (think Oculus Rift and HTC Vive) is a fully immersive technology, secluding the user to visualize only digital content.
Augmented reality (think Google Glass) technology combines the physical and virtual worlds together by overlaying digital information into the user’s environment.
Mixed reality (think Microsoft HoloLens) technology can be thought of as a more advanced augmented reality; it recognizes its surroundings and allows the digital content to interact with the real-world.
Our mission is to be hardware agnostic, building our software on whatever hardware platforms most closely match our customers’ needs. As of today, we have 3 applications released for Microsoft HoloLens, with SketchUp Viewer also working with HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.
We have current projects underway on even more platforms including Google ARCore, Apple ARKit, DAQRI Smart Helmet, Meta 2, Windows Mixed Reality, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift.
Some of these are available for beta testing through our Trimble Partnership Program.
Our customers in the AEC industry are using the technology to visualize 3D design earlier and more effectively than ever before, rapidly iterate on design ideas in 3D, collaborate with others (both collocated and remote) while immersed in the design, overlay designs on the real world for things such as clash detection and renovation visualization, and use models in the real world as an “instruction guide” for actual production.
In buildings operations and asset management, we can tie real-world assets, such as hot water tanks and thermostats, back to their records in a database to overlay metadata directly on the real world. Technicians can use this to understand what assets in a room might need maintenance, to pull up instruction manuals on how to perform that maintenance, or to assign work orders directly from the field.
In the mining industry, our customers are using mixed reality to visualize their open pit mines on a tabletop or immersively while sitting at their desks thousands of miles away. They can overlay important information such as stockpiles volumes, ore movements and grade, and near real-time locations of machinery and trucks.
We’ve just started to crack open the possibilities of this technology. Have an idea? Let us know!
Yes! The hardware is available for purchase today (from the hardware manufacturers) and Trimble has five products available, not to mention our hard hat accessory for Microsoft HoloLens!.
Three apps are available commercially (Trimble Connect, SketchUp Viewer, and Visual Intelligence for Connected Mine) and two are in beta and available as part of our Partnership Program (SiteVision and Trimble Operations)

The Trimble Mixed Reality professional services team is inviting select partners to join us in bringing this cutting-edge technology to the world. As part of the Trimble Partnership Program, early adopters receive access to pre-release feature sets, hands-on consulting to scope use cases and structure workflows around the technology, and prioritized consideration for feature requests and custom development.
Industry-leading companies, such as Acciona, BP, Gensler, CSCEC, and Brookfield GIS are already reaping the benefits of this technology.
