When you send an email, share a video, visit a website, or store your photos, the data you create moves between your device, Google services, and our data centers. We protect this data with multiple layers of security, including leading encryption technology like HTTPS and Transport Layer Security.

From custom-designed data centers to undersea fiber cables that transfer data between continents, we operate one of the world’s most secure and reliable cloud infrastructures. And it is continuously monitored to protect your data and make it available when you need it. In fact, we distribute data across multiple data centers, so that in the event of a fire or natural disaster, it can be automatically and seamlessly shifted to stable and secure locations.

Many malware and phishing attacks start with an email. Gmail protects you from spam, phishing, and malware better than any other email service. Using machine learning and artificial intelligence, Gmail analyzes patterns in billions of messages to identify characteristics of emails that users marked as spam, and uses those markers to block 99.9 percent of suspicious or dangerous emails before they ever reach you.

Gmail offers other protections, like sending alerts when a potentially risky email comes through, letting you manually “Report spam” for suspicious emails, and confidential mode, which makes your messages expire after a set period of time and removes the option for recipients to forward, copy, download, or print your message.

Security technologies are always changing, so Chrome regularly checks to make sure that the version of the browser you’re using is up to date. This includes the latest security fixes, protections from malware and deceptive sites, and more. And it updates automatically, so being protected by the latest Chrome security technology is easy.

Your security and online experience can be affected by ads that carry malware, cover content you are trying to see, promote fake goods, or otherwise violate our advertising policies. We take this problem very seriously. Every year we block billions of bad ads – on average, 100 per second – through a combination of live reviewers and sophisticated software blocks. We also give you tools to report offensive ads and control what types of ads you see. And we actively publish our insights and best practices to help make the Internet safer for all.

We never give “back door” access to user data or our servers that store user data, period. That means no government entity, U.S. or otherwise, has direct access to our users’ information. We review any requests for user data that we get, push back when a request is overly broad, and are open about our data requests in our Transparency Report

Google Play Protect is built in to your Android device and continuously works behind the scenes to keep your device, data, and apps safe. We scan your apps before, during, and after download – regardless of where you are downloading them from.

We’ll proactively notify you if we detect something we think you should know about, like a suspicious login or a malicious website, file, or app, and provide guidance to help you stay better protected. For example, on Gmail, we’ll warn you before you download an attachment that could put your security at risk or if someone logs in to your account from a device not associated with you. When we detect something suspicious in your account, we’ll send a notification to your inbox or phone so you can protect your account with one click.
