    I had my Open Data Mashups students complete a talk submission about their project as a deliverable to me (not required to submit it to the conf, just to me) and it's just about my favorite thing ever to grade.

    Yesterday I was talking to a python newcomer and affirmed that: they were doing all the right things to learn, what questions it is ok to not have answered yet, their unique background is valuable and needed, and they belong in our community. Which resulted in tears. 🐍❤️

    Serious question for people who remember a time before google: What did you do when you needed a random piece of info, like the number of feet in a mile, or the current time in California? Did you physically go to a library each time? Did you consult a wizard? Did you guess?

    I have a few students who have discovered markdown because they've seen me use it and are now doing all their written assignments in it (it isn't required). You can teach things without having them be a first order learning goal in your classroom.
