The #Trumpadministration's global campaign against telecom giant #Huawei is pitting Europe against itself over #China. Up until now, no intelligence service has published clear evidence that Huawei inserted 'backdoors' for Chinese authorities to access the data that passes through its networks. Huawei itself vehemently denies it has ever helped any intelligence service with espionage requests.

Overall, #Europe's response to concerns about Huawei has been: Show us proof, then we’ll consider the actions. In critical markets such as #Germany, #France and the #UnitedKingdom, authorities have charged security agencies with verifying telecom equipment. In the U.K., Huawei has a longstanding deal with the intelligence agency GCHQ to have its equipment audited at a center called 'the Cell,' in Banbury, a provincial town in southeast England, where cybersecurity experts check its code for backdoors.

The Chinese #telecoms giant #Huawei is to spend $2bn (£1.5bn) in an effort to alleviate British security services’ concerns about vulnerabilities in its products, capping a torrid week for the firm. In July, a British government centre established to verify the integrity of Huawei’s technology warned that it had security concerns about the company’s technology and could only provide 'limited assurance' that risks to national security had been mitigated. BT confirmed it was removing Huawei equipment from key areas of its #4G network over concerns about the Chinese firm’s presence in critical telecoms infrastructure.

In 2010 the company struck an agreement with the British government to set up the Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre in Banbury, Oxfordshire, to mitigate any potential risks arising from the use of the company’s products in national infrastructure. Its work is overseen by the National Cyber Security Centre, an arm of GCHQ.

#Japan has decided to effectively exclude Chinese #telecommunication equipment giants #HuaweiTechnologies Co. and #ZTE Corp. from public procurement from April, reflecting U.S. concerns over the companies' perceived close ties with the Chinese government. The Japanese government's decision comes amid concerns about security breaches that have already prompted the #UnitedStates, Japan's key ally, and some other counties to ban the two Chinese companies from supplying infrastructure products.

The U.S. administration of President Donald Trump has banned the use of Huawei and ZTE technology products and services out of concern over their connections with Chinese intelligence under the National Defense Authorization Act introduced in August. #Australia and #NewZealand have also excluded both firms from its next-generation #mobilenetwork.
