Internet Architecture Board

RFC2850

About the Internet Architecture Board

The Internet Architecture Board provides long-range technical direction for Internet development, ensuring the Internet continues to grow and evolve as a platform for global communication and innovation.

In its work, the IAB strives to:

  • Ensure that the Internet is a trusted medium of communication that provides a solid technical foundation for privacy and security, especially in light of pervasive surveillance,
  • Establish the technical direction for an Internet that will enable billions more people to connect, support the vision for an Internet of Things, and allow mobile networks to flourish, while keeping the core capabilities that have been a foundation of the Internet’s success, and
  • Promote the technical evolution of an open Internet without special controls, especially those which hinder trust in the network.

Request for volunteers or nominations to 2018 ICANN NomCom

The IAB (on behalf of the IETF) has been asked to supply a member to the 2018 ICANN Nominating Committee (NomCom). Tim Wicinski has filled this role for the IETF community for the past two years and cannot seek another term due to term limits; the IAB thanks him for his service. If you are interested in serving on the ICANN NomCom, please send a short e-mail to [email protected] and [email protected] with your motivation and information concerning your familiarity with the IETF and ICANN. Alternatively, if you know of someone who may be a good fit for this position, please send the name and email address by e-mail to [email protected] and [email protected]. The IAB is looking for a diverse pool of candidates. The deadline for nominations or volunteers is 15 August 2017. Continue reading

Deadline EXTENDED – Call for Participation: IAB workshop on Explicit Internet Naming Systems

Internet namespaces rely on Internet connected systems sharing a common set of assumptions on the scope, method of resolution, and uniqueness of the names.    That set of assumption allowed the creation of URIs and other systems which presumed that you could authoritatively identify a service using an Internet name, a service port, and a set of locally-significant path elements.  Continue reading

RFC 8170 on Planning for Protocol Adoption and Subsequent Transitions

The IAB has published RFC 8170: Planning for Protocol Adoption and Subsequent Transitions.

Abstract: Over the many years since the introduction of the Internet Protocol, we have seen a number of transitions throughout the protocol stack, such as deploying a new protocol, or updating or replacing an existing protocol.  Many protocols and technologies were not designed to enable smooth transition to alternatives or to easily deploy extensions; thus, some transitions, such as the introduction of IPv6, have been difficult.  This document attempts to summarize some basic principles to enable future transitions, and it also summarizes what makes for a good transition plan.
