    For alternative, I'd go with “tell it like it is”. Or to to keep a card-playing metaphor, "lay your cards on the table" is similar.

    If I ever run into my former next-door neighbour, I'm really going to have to thank her for planting the raspberry bushes by the fence. Yum!

    So I won't have dedicated review/reference sections in the paper book. I'm going to try to work with production to get them in the eBooks.

    Thanks for everyone's replies! Unfortunately, I'm going to disappoint reference-book fans. After a week of edits, I'm still way over length.

    Please tell my editor that ginormous tech books are retro and coming back into fashion and I totally don't need to spend all week editing.

    Many years ago, I'd learn a new programming language by buying a physical super thick "bible" book. I kind of miss those days.

    Tested SVG numeric precision for first time in a while. Firefox on Windows isn't any better. And MS Edge is tragic.

    Last chance to weigh in: If you buy a (hard-copy) book on a tech subject, do you only read it once, or do you use it as a syntax reference?
