Some people enjoy spending a few hours at the golf course, playing a round of 18 holes. Rabbi Matthew Eisenberg of Temple Israel Ner Tamid in Mayfield Heights plans to spend all of Aug. 21 playing 100 holes.
Eisenberg is playing as part of the 10th annual Emil Spitzer Memorial 100-Hole Golf Marathon at Legend Lake Golf Course in Chardon. The marathon raises money for the temple’s tuition-free Sunday and Hebrew schools. Eisenberg said he hopes the marathon raises between $25,000 and $30,000, after expenses.
“The cost (of the schools) is significant,” Eisenberg said. “But we want to keep Jewish education within everyone’s reach.”
So Eisenberg will pack up his clubs and hit the links at 6:30 a.m., rain or shine, for a “shofar start” and golf as many holes as he can.
“I’ll be done by dinnertime one way or the other, because by that time I’ll be dragging,” he said.
Eisenberg said he will also do bar and bat mitzvah tutoring while he’s golfing, and members of the congregation often come out to watch and ride along. If people want to golf, it costs $250 for the day, and Eisenberg will welcome the company, even if they aren’t good golfers.
“They don’t have to be good golfers,” he said. “I only golf once a year, and this day is it.”
