Simply based on the number of sub Reddit's I've found by browsin /r/all I'd have to disagree.

I also don't like the notion that an exclusionary set of subteddits makes sense because it caters to new users.

The subreddits that the most people had filtered from /r/all is what the admins felt should not be included in the new Popular feature.

But that sounds super vague / ambiguous. How are they defining the most people? Also, that's not really what /u/simbawulf said - the words were 'heavily filtered out of users’ r/all'.

I'm not trying to be pedantic, but those words would align with a subreddit that admins chose to exclude (T_D for example).

they have instead based the decision on what the reddit community and mods of each subreddit have decided they would like.

I mean, kinda yes, kinda no. Why should they be choosing what's good for the goose and gander instead of leaving it more open to us? We can already filter our frontpage - why do we want or need them to filter any more for us?

They'll be able to figure it out one way or another, and there's no reason to offer fuel in the form of speculation.

No but it does allow the community to see what the admins feel is appropriate to be disallowed from this list. I understand you guys aren't all about transparency, but you had been at one time.

The reason I'm making a point to push on this, and ask further despite your seemingly flat refusal to release it, is that I believe that a lot of people are feeling slightly, for lack of a better word, disenfranchised - across the board - these days.

I, for one, feel like Reddit didn't do a good job of affording equal exposure to content during the election season, just as an example.

I'm not pointing the finger, but - as I said above - the transparency to know what the admins feel is worthy of being disallowed might be helpful for some of us.

Is it a one-time opt in opt out offering, or can it be done down the road?

I removed it myself because I was only doing it for a few hours.

How about I give you one of the kids for the star and we call it a day?

Correct. I'm pretty sure the fleshed-out version is in the wiki.

It was fun trying one last time to earn it. Giving up now to go spend time with my family - although I'd really rather have the star :)

One thing I've learned over the years is that no matter what side of the coin the toss lands on, the most vocal are the people who disagree with it.

It was true when we first implemented rules about what could and couldn't be posted, it was true when we disallowed self posts. It's too early to tell but it might be the case here as well. Regardless, I only take it so much to heart - we've all got way more important stuff so if a drop in my bucket is spoiled, I'm ok with that.

I do appreciate your kind words thought - I like to let that have a greater effect on me than the negativity - so thanks!!

I changed my mind, after thinking it out equally rationally.

Totally correct. I didn't talk to the mods / admins over there, and I discussed briefly, internally, with a few people from the TIL mod team. This was not a planned thing either - very spur of the moment, although the though has crossed my mind previously, tonight was the 'just do it' at work.

Ask my fellow mods about caring about free speech on Reddit. I'm one of the strongest advocates of our current policy of not moderating comments. I'm not trying to be shady with this - it's just a post to bring people to a fun game. I felt like it was an everybody wins sort of thing, but it looks like people are falling on both sides of the line at this point.

The long and short of it is that I have gotten a lot out of the (tag pro) community over the years that I've been part of it. Besides donating money, the most useful thing (I think) one can do is to be a positive member of that community, play the game, and bring new players to the game. I've donated as much as I'm comfortable donating, and try to be a nice guy when I'm playing, so the only thing left for me to try to do is spread the word. I do tell people who may be interested about it.

I've always known that I have a fairly large audience with the TIL community. In the past, when I thought about using the platform to teach a large audience, I felt like it was inappropriate (e.g. Linking to a charity I wanted to see get better exposure, for one). Sure, nothing 'wrong' with trying to do good in the world, but I felt like it wasn't right and that the community would feel suspicious of the motives, etc.

With this, I feel like 'TIL about a cool fun webgame' isn't the worst thing. So I went for it. I guess only time will tell how it plays out.

Hope that answers your question.

Wasn't my intent at all - sorry if it makes the game look bad, or if the TIL community disagrees with my posting.
