Tiki culture is about the Polynesia that never was. The height of kitsch, it's a longing for the time when Hawai'i was still an exotic locale with topless hulas and bottomless mai tais. It all started in 1933 with the first Don the Beachcomber tiki restaurant, and was rejuvenated in the mid-90's with the printing of The Book of Tiki by Sven Kirsten.
