Teachers and parents of teens and young adults with ADHD: Altercations run amok? It might be ODD.
65% of people with ADHD also have Oppositional Defiant Disorder. It's characterized by losing temper, aggressiveness, and refusing to comply with adults' requests or rules. Specific criteria must be used to confirm diagnosis (DSM-5).
*Recognize little victories. Be specific in feedback.
*Pick your battles. Remember, not everything's a crisis.
*Set a few non-negotiable rules. It's "my way or the highway."
*Suggest tutoring. Use one-on-one instruction to forge relationships.
*Incorporate rating scales. Give teachers/tutors ways to measure progress.
"Our kids" can struggle interpreting body language. Set clear and consistent expectations.
