What an Email Address Says About You (Hotmail/Yahoo)
When you work in the business and technology security worlds, especially email security, you soon learn about email domains and services more prone to attack, exploitation or spam. In the past both Hotmail and Yahoo accounts were the services with the worst reputations, presented the greatest risk to employees and business systems and in many cases (including some of my past business or government clients), incoming email from Hotmail accounts were systematically blocked. I have not heard anything about Yahoo's reputation these days but it seems the actuaries have identified statistically significant risks associated with persons using Hotmail email accounts.
"Insurance companies spend huge amounts of time and money trying to work out who's more likely to make a claim. While it's common sense that if you live in a high-crime area, or park on the street rather than in a garage, your car's more at risk – there are a lot of less obvious things they look at too. Everything from job titles to your age and driving history are used to set premiums. Oh, and which email provider you use.Research conducted for Mirror Money can exclusively reveal that 7 car insurance brands charge people with hotmail.com email addresses more for insurance than people with gmail.com ones."
