Upcoming GIMP 2.9.8 will feature a new display filter that visualizes underexposed and overexposed areas in an image. Clip Warning locates all pixels outside of 0..1.0 value range and thus only works for 16/32 bit per channel images with a floating point precision (not integer).
This new filter was programmed by Ell following a user's request in the mailing list. For now, we consider this to be a work-in-the progress feature, because we intend to make it easier to toggle this kind of visualizations.

New in the master branch: on-canvas gradient editing. You can now add, shift, and remove color stops, as well as set colors to them right on the canvas. When you choose the middle between two color stops, you can also choose a different blending type for that segment of the gradient.
The feature was added by Ell as the result of internal changes introduced by Michael Natterer. We shall release it as part of 2.9.8 later this year (or maybe even later this month).

macOS build is delayed thanks to the arrival of a baby daughter of our macOS packager, Kris Rietveld. Nappies before DMGs! :)

+Øyvind Kolås recently started writing code for getting the babl library to support custom tone reproduction curves and RGB primaries, so that GIMP would be more flexible in terms of RGB color spaces it supports (that is, less dependency on unbounded sRGB). There's a lot to be done before proper arbitrary RGB support lands to GIMP, but it's a good start.
We also expect some of the relevant changes to speed up color transformations in GIMP, because doing it with LittleCMS is too slow for the large pictures that modern DSLRs produce.
Needless to say, you can support Øyvind's work on babl and GEGL (and occasionally on GIMP) by becoming his patron on Patreon.

Here's the second video by +ZeMarmot introducing GIMP Motion. This time animations are created with composited frames.
The new GIMP Motion plug-in is a work in progress in a dedicated development branch by +Jehan Pagès.

And now thanks to Ell the PSD plug-in supports importing images with pass-through mode for layer groups :) Exporting is still TODO.
