We the People, Not We the Corporations

On January 21, 2010, with its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are persons, entitled by the U.S. Constitution to buy elections and run our government. Human beings are people; corporations are legal fictions.

We, the People of the United States of America, reject the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United and other related cases, and move to amend our Constitution to firmly establish that money is not speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.

The Supreme Court is misguided in principle, and wrong on the law. In a democracy, the people rule.

We Move to Amend.

7 years after Citizens United

January 21, 2017

Seven years ago, on January 21, Move to Amend launched the Motion to Amend petition just moments after the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision. Since then:

  • We have gained over 420,000 supporters, 
  • Established local grassroots affiliate groups across the United States, and passed hundreds of resolutions and ballot iniatives calling for the We the People Amendment. 
  • Our amendment has been introduced in Congress with the support of 24 Congressional co-sponsors under the leadership of Rep. Rick Nolan (MN). 
  • Hundreds of organizations from churches to political parties have endorsed our effort as well.

More importantly, this was accomplished through our grassroots citizen volunteers, all while being independently funded.

Congress moves to give away national lands

The Congressional devaluation of national property is the most far-reaching legislative change in a recent push to transfer federal lands to the states. Because of the Republican majority in Congress, bills proposing land transfers could now swiftly diminish Forest Service and BLM lands across the country.

“We didn’t see it coming. I think it was sneaky and underhanded. It exemplifies an effort to not play by the rules,” said Alan Rowsome, senior director of government relations at The Wilderness Society. “This is the worst Congress for public lands ever.”
