Thanks for participating in today’s #idgtechtalk on data collection ethics. Many good ideas: right to understand, right to use your data ends when you stop using a service, selective opt-in, be stingy with data, and tech has inherent motives so not 100% neutral. See you next week

@willkelly: agreed! When we start to treat data as stingily as we do cash, things will really change. Right now, we treat data as having no value, even though it does, so we collectively make bad #privacy decisions. #idgtechtalk

For Q5, my own tips: Never sign into a third-party service with a social account. Use junk social IDs like you (should) do for email and phone. Don't answer questionnaires/quizzes. Reveal as little as possible. Go elsewhere if it feels invasive or an overreach. #idgtechtalk

Personally, I find life without personal social media accounts quite nice. Less noise, less spying. And we have all sorts of private chat apps from Apple Messages to Whats App to stay in touch with friends and family. Any FB/LI/Twitter dependency is self-created. #idgtechtalk

For Q3, I like @ClareBrownIDG's earlier notion of the "right to understand." Puts the burden on openness and clarity. If not met, the subject can get damages. Lawyers will love it, and though messy that will drive behavioral change in companies. Sad but true #idgtechtalk

Q3: Many people know their data is being collected by certain sites, but are then shocked by how the data is used. How can organizations avoid this situation? #idgtechtalk pic.twitter.com/ruvmXYuxOu

Tom DeMarco, a former colleague of mine, used to say sometimes the best way to get change is to walk away, not try to fix something fundamentally broken. He was referring to staff leaving bad management. Maybe that should apply here: Don't do business with them! #idgtechtalk

#GDPR is Europe's attempt at creating laws around data collection that put people in control, or at least awareness. A model for the rest of the world? And if so, what do you think FB et al will do next to make money? #idgtechtalk (That's why they exist)

Organizations rely heavily on self-regulation to stay ethical. Should there be laws to keep orgs ethical? What should the laws say? #idgtechtalk pic.twitter.com/N6CHLNoZws

Maybe if something is free-for-money, paid-via-data, a big warning each time you use it: "Everything you do here we are tracking." Clear consent then if you continue :) #idgtechtalk

My own take is that people rarely understand what they agree to even when given opt-in. In all Facebook's fine print is a lot to scare you. Yet, … What to do? #idgtechtalk
