It’s after the point where the government defused the rebellion so I don’t see why Tory whips couldn’t be more tolerant

I’ve just seen a Labour MP in a wheelchair with a paper sick bucket looking in lots of pain after voting (because Tories refused MPs who r ill to vote from the car park). It was quite a sad sight.

Is it really worth it? For this? It’s hardly a late-Callaghan confidence motion

It’s not entirely clear who has won today. But it *might not* be brexiteers...

Can the government stop the motion on the meaningful vote being amended? This note - from Commons Clerks - suggests they can’t. So Tory rebels can happily walk away from the rebellion without inflicting defeat - yet seem happy Or are we missing something?

Really, today’s essay question is who is playing whom, and who has the better constitutional expertise

In that way that high stakes politics works incredibly fast, I think you’ll find Labour is weaponising this point to try and ensure loyalty on their own side ....

Others say the Written Ministerial Statement “not meaningless” and a big concession At this point I suspect we just need to wait and see what comes!

A WMS to say the unamendable motion might in fact be amendable but only if the rebels don't amend the amendment today. Joy.

Source: A compromise being discussed is gvt putting down a written ministerial statement “clarifying” the gvt motion on meaningful vote might be amendable to appease Tory remain rebels. (I think this wd be a pretty meaningless sop since WMS can’t change Commons standing orders)

“What does this man have to do to have his invitation to this country revoked? asks - May says detention of children “clearly and unequivocally wrong”; but we have a “longstanding special relationship” which means she can raise the issue with Trump.

Labour sources claim Tories refusing to “nod thru” ill MPs this afternoon. Conventionally, ill MPs can turn up and stay in car/ambulance in courtyard and be deemed to hv voted. 2 Lab MPs coming from hospital, one on morphine, source claimed. Not today (unless deal done etc)

So as of midday I’ve spoken to leading Tory rebels who say “there’s a long way to go” and are giving the impression there *could* be some gvt movement before 3.30pm. That, as someone once said, is a snapshot not a prediction...

Wasn't this the central thrust of Mansion House? "Our objective of ensuring that these products only need to undergo one series of approvals, in one country."

best guess for today is that a handful of Eurosceptic Labour MPs will save May’s skin

Although I think the gvt are worrying they will lose MORE than the opposition think they will win. If you get my drift
