How the cloud is transforming the ways grants professionals work https://blogs.microsoft.com/firehose/2017/06/08/how-the-cloud-is-transforming-the-ways-grants-professionals-work/ Thu, 08 Jun 2017 17:34:19 +0000 http://blogs.microsoft.com/firehose/?p=363925 Read more »]> Most organizations administrating grants are using systems that have been in place for decades: spreadsheets, word processing documents and massive stacks of paper. But cloud-based management is transforming how grant professionals work, writes Todd Bergeson, senior global marketing manager for Microsoft’s Public Sector.

The cloud offers universal accessibility, flexibility and near limitless scale over on-premises technology, with dramatic total-cost-of-ownership savings, Bergeson says. “With a cloud solution, grant recipients and intermediaries are empowered to seamlessly update their progress and report to their funders anytime, anywhere, on any device. Moreover, centralizing grant and contract processes in the cloud enhances efficiency, and enables funders, recipients, sub-recipients and intermediaries to have access to the same reporting data.”

Proud Together: Microsoft’s involvement in 2017 global Pride celebrations is its biggest to date https://blogs.microsoft.com/firehose/2017/06/07/proud-together-microsofts-involvement-in-2017-global-pride-celebrations-is-its-biggest-to-date/ Wed, 07 Jun 2017 22:50:04 +0000 http://blogs.microsoft.com/firehose/?p=363829 Read more »]> Microsoft leaders and employees gathered Tuesday afternoon in Redmond, Washington, at an event to kick off the company’s worldwide Pride celebrations and celebrate its longstanding support for the global LGBT+ community.

Microsoft increased its financial support for Pride this year and is sponsoring events in 29 cities from Charlotte to Copenhagen, Toronto to Tokyo. Last year, about 2,500 Microsoft employees participated in Pride parades and other events in 23 cities worldwide that drew an estimated 10 million attendees.

“Pride is an opportunity for LGBT-plus people to be out and visible and see that support,” said Alex Mullans, Pride director for GLEAM, Microsoft’s LGBT+ employee resource group. “In the past couple of years, we’ve really expanded to this global celebration we have now.”

While Microsoft’s involvement in global Pride celebrations is relatively recent, its support for the LGBT+ community goes back decades. Microsoft was one of the first companies worldwide to offer employee benefits to same-sex domestic partners and one of the first to include sexual orientation in its corporate non-discrimination policy.

Also, for the 12th consecutive year, Microsoft scored a perfect 100 on the 2017 Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index, which ranks U.S. companies for their corporate policies and practices impacting LGBT+ employees.

With new BI sample model, you can try Azure Analysis Services without needing to build anything https://blogs.microsoft.com/firehose/2017/06/07/with-new-bi-sample-model-you-can-try-azure-analysis-services-without-needing-to-build-anything/ Wed, 07 Jun 2017 22:39:18 +0000 http://blogs.microsoft.com/firehose/?p=363817 Read more »]> Self-service business intelligence (BI) tools have made big strides in making data accessible to business users, writes Josh Caplan, Azure senior program manager. But most business users don’t have the expertise or desire to “do the heavy lifting that is typically required,” including finding the right sources of data, importing the raw data and transforming it into the right shape and more before they can explore the data to derive insights.

Now, business users can use Azure Analysis Services without the need to build anything, using a new sample model based on the Adventure Works Internet Sales database, Caplan says.

“With Azure Analysis Services, a BI professional can create a semantic model over the raw data and share it with business users so that all they need to do is connect to the model from any BI tool and immediately explore the data and gain insights,” he writes.
