Release Notes

For more information about the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool, please see
http://store.microsoft.com/help/ISO-Tool.

The Windows 7 USD/DVD Download Tool uses material from ImageMaster, a .NET C#
application for reading and writing disc images (*.iso files). ImageMaster
is licensed under the terms of the GPL. For more information about ImageMaster,
please see http://imagemaster.codeplex.com/.

This project uses the WIX Votive plugin for Visual Studio 2008. Please see
http://wix.sourceforge.net/votive.html for installation instructions.

To build in Visual Studio 2008:

1. Make desired changes to the source code.

2. Copy the wudtsource.zip file to the same directory as the .sln file.

3. Build the project in Visual Studio.

To create localized installers and self-extracting files:

1. Build the project as described above.

2. Run the Install\CreateLocalizedInstallers.cmd script to create the
localized MSI installers.

To bypass formatting the USB device within the tool:

1. Ensure the registry key "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ISO Backup Tool" is created.

2. Create a new DWORD value named "DisableFormat" in this location and set the value to 1.

NOTE: The USB device should be formatted manually before running the tool.

Reviews for this release

Installed Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate with USB, Worked 100 % fine. I would name this tool as Any ISO to USB or DVD Bootable. Though it gave an error message while copying files to USB that unable to copy your iso to USB, may be because it checks the size of ISO to match with Windows 7 Size

Good to see Microsoft using OSS software & putting it out as open source, even if it was forced. UI is simple, and it's nice to see MS allow people to do something different with the installs. Only got a 4 star cause the copying was very slow.

Because Microsoft was willing to make it's code open sourced, that is something we should all be happy about.

It wouldn't recognize any of my USB drives. I tried sandisk, verbatim, patriot, and pny. I tried it with a completely unpartitioned drive, a drive partitioned with fdisk in linux (with and without the bootable flag toggled on the partition), drive partitioned with diskpart in Windows. It just wouldn't recognize the drive. I even borrowed USB drives from several coworkers and got the same result. Then, I remembered that the Boot Camp Assistant on OS X lets you create a USB installer. I fired up my MacBook Air running El Capitan and was able to get the installer created easily. If anyone's reading this, I hope you realized how sad this is.

Firefox reports this as containing malware\virus. Could install it on a virtual system, but that seems just too much of a hassle. Will use other software instead.

It seems work fine also with Windows 10, by an ISO downloaded from an MSDN account: there was no problems with OS' installation and configuration.

The program is functional. Suggest to remove "Windows 7" from title since it can be used to create media for other versions.

An exceptional simple tool which is doing very well what it has been designed for. And still runs perfectly after 7 years. A must have.

Worked like a charm on a fresh Windows 8 install, thank you! I tested burning an ISO to a USB stick that was over 2 GB. I loved the interface and simplicity of everything. Amazing concept and execution honestly.

This program works fine with latest Windows 10 Preview too, at least on its USB part.

Awesome. Only issue is that it cannot make 64-bit images on 32-bit systems. But it's still fine.

Works well for Windows 8 iso as well as Windows 7. Wish they'd rename it to remove the "7" which is misleading now.

It works for both Windows 7 and WDP, this should work with future Windows 8 builds too. Thanks for this nice app!

I was trying to create a Server 2008 R2 SP1 USB Key from an ISO Image. This tool ran all the way through and then failed due to the fact that it could not run bootsect to make it bootable. It should run bootsect FIRST, or atlease test the command to make sure it will work, instead of waiting 10 minutes to tell you that it failed. I think this has to do with 64-bit bootsect on 32-bit windows.

Very poor: Simply based on the same criteria of the first rating. Microsoft did not release this as open source because he want to, but because he was suppouse to do so on a first place (but instead tried to release it as propietary, by mistake). Also, it took more than the promised one week for this release.
by Locoxella on Dec 11, 2009 at 5:28 AM

Very poor. When it fails there is no error message or reason. No way of troubleshooting problems. Creating a USB failed. Creating a DVD worked fine, but then failed when I booted from it. Downloaded a new ISO and same problems. Will just use WDS instead bc this is long to troubleshoot
