Stephen Bunn: +Richard Bucker sorry, but keeping logs on the machine just doesn't scale. When you have 5k machines running multiple docker containers it is not feasible. It becomes somebody's full time job to collect logs -- not to mention a security concern.

Unordered logs have never been a problem for us. Logs from any particular host are going to be ordered and if a few drop is not critical for us, we are not using ELK as a SIMS. Our main use case is trends and scale error detection.

Richard Bucker: +Stephen Bunn well, that's not true. Ask google.

Stephen Bunn: Awesome, Google has stacks of cash and in house solutions. I know what works for my org. You seem to be anti ELK and that is cool.. do whatever works for you.

+Stefan Prodan I just wanted to point out that the redis cache might be an increase in complexity that you might not actually need.

I took the cluster down for almost two hours doing some testing. I expected the local LS instances to drop the logs but they didn't. When I brought the cluster back all of our nodes starting streaming logs from -2 hours and was able to catch up in about 20 minutes.
