"It is now possible for GIMP to switch precision automatically to 32 bit linear floating point, with optional dithering by default when opening JPGs and PNGs. GIMP now also asks for the desired bit-depth when exporting PNG files; without having to change the precision of the edited image."
Official Post from Øyvind Kolås: Many of the changes starting on the pippin/linear-is-the-new-black branch have now made their way to master, in the process fixing a few GIMP bugs. Some of the changes are the result of work on improving fidelity of some basic workflows, like starting out with opening a JPG or PNG photo. It is now

This is the pilot episode of an old project, back from 2014 or 2015 which was rotting in our hard drives. We thought we'd release it today (+Creative Commons by-sa 4.0 as everything we do) rather than leaving it disappear.
As usual, it was fully drawn with +GIMP.
Enjoy!

Personal fundraiser by Øyvind Kolås to sponsor his work on GEGL, our new image processing engine, has reached $1,000! Thank you!

Meanwhile work on GIMP and GEGL continues. It's now possible to automatically promote 8-bit images to e.g. 32-bit float and dither them on loading to avoid color fidelity loss during editing. This feature is configurable — respective options are on a new "Image Import & Export" preferences page.

+Jehan Pagès also posted some details on the animation plug-in for GIMP that he's been working on.

Our end-of-2016 report: https://girinstud.io/news/2016/12/zemarmot-end-of-year-report/

Now is a good time to support ZeMarmot project by donating by the way (all links in the blog post)! ;-)
For a good movie, Libre Art, Free Software, artists fairly paid, because you want +GIMP even better and faster… any reason you wish!
Hi everyone! How are going your last days of 2016 so far? It’s been a strange year, right? Well let’s not diverge, and focus on ZeMarmot, then, shall we? First be aware that our dear Di…

Working on different frequency scales is one of the most powerful techniques for retouching and contrast enhancement as you can learn from e.g. this tutorial by +Patrick David: https://pixls.us/articles/skin-retouching-with-wavelet-decompose/.

Until recently wavelet decomposition into multiple frequency scales was available either by manually blurring copies of the original layer (and manually changing the layer mode to Grain Extract) or by installing 3rd party plug-ins such as Wavelet Decompose and +G'MIC. This is changing now.

+Miroslav Talasek contributed a GEGL operation for wavelet decomposition and created a simple GIMP plug-in that makes use of that operation. Both the operation and the plug-in are currently available in main development branches of GEGL and GIMP respectively and will be part of the next stable GEGL release and the next unstable GIMP release (2.9.x, leading to 2.10).

There are certainly ways to improve the plug-in (like adding a checkbox to automatically generate layer masks). Please let us know what you think!

Today, +David Tschumperlé has implemented a new interactive filter for quickly creating color masks from images. It's already available in the +GIMP plug-in, for people working with the 2.0.0_pre development version of G'MIC (available there for testing : http://gmic.eu/files/prerelease/).

Basically, the filter opens an interactive window where you have to move your mouse over the colors you want keep (with left mouse button clicked), and then do the same for the colors you want to reject (right mouse button). The filter then tries to guess what colors to keep for the whole image, based on a very simple learning algorithm.

The video below shows how this filter can be used to quickly change the (ugly :) ) color of a car ! There's probably a lot of use cases, so give it a try !

Update: I've just published an update for this particular filter, taking into account spatial constraints too. See new video that shows how it works now : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2nkbkqYquc

Upcoming GIMP 2.10 is featuring 16/32-bit per color channel precision support thanks to many people who worked on GEGL, our new image processing engine.

Øyvind Kolås has been working on GEGL since mid-2000s, he's the principal developer of that project with a 42% share of all changes. He is now looking for community's support to further improve this engine.

The more time he can spend on GEGL, the faster we can implement more advanced features, such as layer effects, non-destructive editing, and CMYK/spot colors support.

If you are interested to boost the development of GIMP, you can fund his work on Patreon.

i'd commit a bug report but i have a hard time tracking it down... it happens from time to time on several different computers running the same image with the development version of gimp 2.9.5 - the basis of the system is kubuntu with kde #neon  on top of it (5.8.5)

it's the only problem i encountered with gimp 2.9 so far..

if i switch back from "color" to "legacy" icons they appear again.. and for some reason they could be gone again 10min later..
