Samsung Launches Premium Exynos 9 Series Processor Built on the World’s First 10nm FinFET Process Technology

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced the launch of its latest premium application processor (AP), the Exynos 9 Series 8895. This is Samsung’s first processor chipset to take advantage of the most advanced and industry leading 10-nanometer (nm) FinFET process technology with improved 3D transistor structure, which allows up to 27% higher performance while consuming 40% less power when compared to 14nm technology.

The new Exynos 9 Series 8895 is the first processor of its kind to embed a gigabit LTE modem that supports five carrier aggregation, or 5CA. It delivers fast and stable data throughput at max.1Gbps (Cat.16) downlink with 5CA and 150Mbps (Cat.13) uplink with 2CA.

The Exynos 8895 is an octa-core processor, comprising of four of Samsung’s 2nd generation custom designed CPU cores for improved performance and power efficiency in addition to four Cortex®-A53 cores. With Samsung Coherent Interconnect (SCI) technology, the latest processor integrates a heterogeneous system architecture that allows faster computing for a wide range of applications such as artificial intelligence, and deep learning.

The Exynos 8895 also delivers unsurpassed multimedia experience with its powerful GPU and multi-format codec (MFC) as well as next level 3D graphic performance that minimizes latency for 4K UHD VR and gaming experience with ARM®’s latest Mali™-G71 GPU.

In addition, with its advanced MFC, the processor supports video recording and playback at a maximum resolution of 4K UHD at 120fps. It also comes with video processing technology that enables a higher quality experience by enhancing the image quality; for example, for VR (Virtual Reality) applications, the Exynos 8895 delivers a realistic and immersive VR video experience at 4K resolution.

The Exynos 8895 has a separate processing unit for enhanced security solutions required for mobile payments that use iris or fingerprint recognition as well as an embedded Vision Processing Unit (VPU) that can recognize and analyze items or movements for improved video tracking, panoramic image processing, and machine vision technology.

“In addition to being built on the most advanced 10nm FinFET process technology, the new Exynos 9 Series 8895 incorporates Samsung’s cutting-edge technologies including a 2nd generation custom CPU, gigabit LTE modem, and more” said Ben Hur, Vice President of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics. “With industry leading technologies like VPU, the Exynos 8895 will drive the innovation of next generation smartphones, VR headsets, and automotive infotainment system.”

The Specifications sheet for the Samsung Galaxy S8+ has been leaked by Evan Blass.

First, some background on the device. With Samsung deciding to equip the Samsung Galaxy S8 with a dual-curved edge screen, the company figured that it would be best to scrap the unneeded Galaxy S8 edge for a larger screened Galaxy S8+. The latter reportedly carries the same specs as the Galaxy S8, but with a larger 6.2-inch display. Of course, the larger screen would require a larger battery.

Instead of guessing, why not show you what is supposedly a real Galaxy S8+ spec sheet. Most of the specs listed are exactly what we were expecting, although we should point out that a fingerprint scanner is conspicuous by its absence. Apparently, Samsung feels extremely confident in the iris scanner that will apparently be included on the device.

We also note the optional wireless charging feature that will require shelling out for a charging pad. And 4GB of RAM might disappoint some who were looking for Sammy to go to the next level with 6GB of the stuff.

The Samsung Galaxy S8+ should be officially introduced on March 29th along with the Galaxy S8.

What do you think of these specifications ? Share your thoughts in comments.

Huawei P10 press render surfaces giving us another look at the device

The Huawei P10 and P10 Plus are both expected to be unveiled on February 26th at Barcelona. The only difference between the two versions is said to be the use of a dual-curved edge screen on the Plus, while the P10 is reportedly going to carry a flat display. If a render of the P10 tweeted out this afternoon by a busy Evan Blass is legit, this very well might be the case. The Huawei P10 appears to feature a flat screen with narrow bezels. On back, the two cameras and flash take up a surprisingly small amount of space.

The Huawei P10 will feature a 5.5-inch display with a 1440 x 2560 resolution. Under the hood will be the home-grown Kirin 960 chipset containing an octa-core CPU and the Mali-G71 MP8 GPU. The two Leica cameras in back weigh in at 12MP each, with an 8MP camera in front to snap selfies and handle video chats. A fingerprint scanner can be found embedded in the button under the screen in front. Huawei has been sending out videos hinting that the color options for the phone will include Green, Purple, and Blue. Those are choices that you don't see often in a high-end handset.

We will learn everything on February 26th, including the final specs, pricing and availability. Don't forget to circle your calendar.

Xiaomi's Mi Max 2 will boast a 6.44-inch display and 6GB of RAM; rumored to launch this May

Based off of what we've seen so far, smartphones with bezel-less displays appear to be the main attraction for 2017. Leaks of the upcoming Galaxy S8 and LG G6 look mighty impressive, but a company that's already proven to know a thing or two about phones with very minimal bezels is that of Xiaomi. The Xiaomi Mi Mix had everyone drooling when it was announced and released last year, and it certainly got our attention when we were able to go hands-on with the new white variant of the phone at this year's Consumer Electronics Show.

Previous leaks have indicated that Xiaomi will be releasing some sort of successor to the Mix but with a screen that's smaller than the Mix's monstrous 6.4-inch panel, but if big displays are your thing and the Mix is a bit too rich for your blood, a new rumor on Weibo reports that Xiaomi will be releasing the Mi Max 2 this May with a spacious 6.44-inch panel. We're expecting bezels on the Max 2 to be much more visible than they are on the Mi Mix if last year's Mi Max is anything to go by, but this shouldn't be all that surprising considering that these are phones of two distinct natures in Xiaomi's product lineup.

Along with the large display, the Mi Max 2 is also reported to feature a Snapdragon 660 processor, up to 6GB of RAM with 128GB of built-in storage, and a 5,000 mAh battery. It's also said that the design of the Max 2 will be very similar to that of the original Max, but you won't find us complaining about this at all as we found the build quality of last year's Max to be one of its strong suits.

As with all rumors, this information is not official and should be taken lightly. However, if it does turn out to be true, we could be looking at a pretty comparable phablet for a relatively low price. The Mi Mix features a starting price tag of $230, and if Xiaomi is able to deliver on these rumored specs with a similar cost, we could be in for a nice treat.

LG G6 photographed next to an LG G5

After seeing the unannounced LG G6 in various renders and live photos, it looks like we can now take a peek at the new phone in an image pitting it against last year's LG G5.

This new image - embedded above - seems to have originated on Weibo (China's most popular Twitter/Facebook-like platform), and shows a white variant of the G6 next to a silver/black G5.

While it sports a 5.7-inch display (vs. the 5.3-inch screen of the G5), the G6 is about as taller as its predecessor, and only a bit wider. That's because LG greatly minimized the bezel around new phone's display, which is called "Full Vision." Another thing that's visible in the image is that the screen of the G6 has rounded corners - this was pretty much confirmed by LG itself when teasing the handset's new interface.

Breaking away from the G5, the LG G6 is not a modular phone, and has a flat rear (there's no camera bump whatsoever, as recently revealed). Moreover, the new handset is dust- and water-resistant, which can't be said about any previous global flagship from LG.

The LG G6 will be fully unveiled at the end of this week, on February 26, during a MWC 2017 press event.

Samsung launched the new Galaxy A (2017) series last month and since then the company has been gradually rolling it out across the globe. Some customers in North America might be waiting for these devices and at least those who are waiting for them in Canada now have an idea of what the mid-range model in this series is likely going to cost.

No word as yet on how much other handsets in the new Galaxy A series are going to cost and if they will be made available in Canada at all.

The Galaxy A5 (2017) offers a blend of respectable specs at an affordable price. It features a 5.2-inch full HD Super AMOLED display with an Exynos 7880 processor under the hood coupled with 3GB of RAM, 32GB storage and a 3,000mAh battery.
