Donald Trump has not hesitated to voice his opinions on national security issues and to publicly advise the current president on what to do about them in pronouncements that have privately riled the White House. Thursday’s declarations from the president-elect included tweeting that he wants to “greatly” expand America’s nuclear capability — a statement later tempered by a Trump spokesman.
In the past 12 months, Trump has veered widely on the issue, and now he and his advisers are issuing conflicting statements.
Trump said that cost overruns in Lockheed Martin’s $400 billion program to develop the stealth aircraft had prompted him to ask Boeing, another major defense manufacturer, to “price-out a comparable F-18 Super Hornet.”
